Literature professor Axel Fried is a regular at gambling establishments and bookmakers, including illegal ones. He justifies his passion for gambling with ideas drawn from Dostoevsky’s The Gambler. After one particularly unsuccessful night, Axel finds himself owing $44,000. For $10,000, they break his arms. For $20,000, they break his legs.
