Life in Madagascar, fraught with danger, did not live up to the expectations of the animals—Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe, and Gloria the hippo—who were accustomed to the comforts of the New York Zoo, so the friends decide to escape from the island. By chance, the whole group ends up in Africa, where Alex meets his family, from whom he was separated as a child.
