Tom Campbell runs into a police box to report a theft, but finds himself in the TARDIS, a time-traveling ship. Together with its master, Doctor Who, they travel to the year 2150. The future turns out to be sad, as the planet is overrun by Daleks who are destroying humans and turning them into an army of cyborgs.

Let me tell you right off the bat that this movie is based on one of the episodes of season 2 of the classic. A different set of characters than the original. Susan and the Doctor are played by different actors, but they are not bad. Certainly not as charismatic as Hartnell, but this Doctor is also quite good.
My impressions of the movie are rather positive. I didn’t expect such a pleasant and easy movie from ’66. There were flaws, of course, but I want to emphasize the advantages.
First, the movie is in color. It’s nice. Multicolored Daleks (hello Moffat) and a nice bright picture speak in favor of the film. The picture is crisp, and the sound, too, by the way. I have no complaints here.
Secondly, Bernard Cribbins. I’ve loved him wholeheartedly ever since I saw him in the new series as Donna’s grandfather. He’s a lovely, sweet, kind old man. Here, of course, he’s far from an old man, but a brave policeman who happens to be aboard the TARDIS. And he plays his Tom just wonderfully. With great humor and excitement.
Third. The classic series often sins against dragging on and being boring. This was not the case here. Dynamic plot development plus occasional humorous situations (mostly at the expense of Cribbins). It wasn’t boring. And that, in the end, is the most important thing.
Fourth. Music. I liked the musical accompaniment to the movie. Not trite, as in the first seasons of the Doctor. And, compared to all the same classic Doctor, the background music was much more often, making what’s happening looked more interesting, dynamic and organic.
The film is worth seeing if you want a painless introduction to the classic Doctor. It doesn’t commit to anything. But what a historical excursion! Young Cribbins, learn who Susan is and how the Doctor met the Daleks for the second time. Don’t expect too much from the film, not a 21st century production after all. The future is vaguely drawn, the very idea of a plan far away was not developed much. But from my experience of watching the first version, I would say it was the right decision. Less boring incomprehensible talks, more humor and an easy hour and a half will exterminate all your sorrows. Enjoy watching it!
