They are all decapitated and the heads disappear. Crane has to make sure that this is not a legend, but the terrible truth. It becomes obvious that the killer comes from the other side of the world, that witches and other evil are involved in the crimes. The Horseman cannot be killed by a bullet, all the brave men he defeats in fights. But what are the motives behind the atrocities…?

When you look at another Tim Burton creation, you can’t help but wonder if the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is blind.

After awarding the long-awaited ‘Oscar’ to Martin Scorsese, the title of the most underrated director goes to Barton. It’s one thing when film academies persistently avoid awarding Lynch’s or Shyamalan’s films for their atypicality and informality, but what’s so unappealing about Barton? Ordinary viewers have long loved him and gave him all sorts of ‘Oscars’ and ‘Globes’.

His creations have no analogues in modern cinema. Because he doesn’t make dramas, comedies or horror movies. He makes fairy tales. But not fairy tales for children, fairy tales for adults. Sometimes romantic like ‘Edward Scissorhands’ and sometimes mysterious and sad like ‘Sleepy Hollow’.

Briefly about the plot of the movie, New York XVIII century, a young constable with reforming tendencies is sent to the town of Sleepy Hollow, where there is a series of mysterious murders that must be investigated. You’ll say it’s a detective – but you’re wrong.

It turns out that the murders are committed by a mysterious headless horseman, who then takes the heads of his victims, and of course not without black magic. Say mysticism and fantasy – again wrong, this is not ‘Van Helsing’ and not ‘Dracula’. There is a love story in the movie, but it’s not another love story or melodrama. There is no name for this genre yet, for only Barton can come up with it.

The atmosphere, movie sets and sound effects are inexpressible. And also uncomplicated plot and a little humor plus excellent acting by Depp and a little worse, but at the level of Christina Ricci – a rattling mixture that does not allow the viewer to tear himself away from the screen until the final credits.

Separately I would like to say about the performer of the main role. Of course, it is Johnny Depp, Tim Burton’s favorite actor. It is very difficult to imagine any of Barton’s masterpieces without Johnny Depp playing the main role. I honestly find it hard to imagine performing the role of Ed Wood or Edward Scissorhands with anyone else. Depp has a phenomenal talent for getting into his roles, which is epitomized on screen. I think it’s hard for fans of ‘Pirates…’ to imagine, say, Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise playing Jack Sparrow.

In this movie, Depp, as in many of his others, is a bit troubled, nervous, with his own quirks, such as the fearless constable, scared to death of spiders and calmly conducting an autopsy on a corpse or hiding behind the back of a boy helper in the cave of an evil witch. As a hero-lover, he is also very funny: believing in the headless horseman, black magic and spells, he answers his beloved’s accusations of heartlessness: ‘I have not experienced feelings, I am constrained by the chains of reason’.

In general, Depp in this movie is exactly as he was loved by many fans to which I include myself.

Hidden meanings and deep morals in the movie I somehow did not notice, if someone found them, please share with everyone.

In general, to all those who have not watched it, I strongly advise: If you want to immerse yourself in a completely different world, created by the unrecognized genius Tim Burton, enjoy the game of Johnny Depp, feel the atmosphere of the fairy tale and just enjoy the spectacle, then this movie is for you.

Mad Heidi.

How about this – a crazy thriller straight from Switzerland. By the way, a curious detail, it was based on a children’s book (written by Johanna Spiri) about a girl Heidi, who moved to live with her grandfather in the Alps (once watched the Italian film adaptation with Paolo Villaggio). The plot was completely changed, of course, leaving only the grandfather and Heidi herself.

Totalitarian Switzerland, led by the cheesy dictator Miley. You won’t believe it, but he’s played by Casper Van Dien! It’s been a long time since I’ve seen Casper (the friendly ghost, a-ha-ha). Hand on heart, I’d rather have “Mad Heidi” than that scattering of cheesy movies (which Casper is wallowing in). You can see that the (slightly aged) actor is high on the role himself.

Miley wants to conquer the world. He even has his own deranged scientist who conducts experiments, turning prisoners into cheesy zombies. Only Heidi and her grandfather alone can stand up to them, as you have already guessed. It’s worth saying that the movie is really full of jokes about cheese. On the one hand, it’s funny. On the other hand, the creators have stumped themselves.

One cheese joke is funny. The second – fun. The third is starting to get boring. This is quite forgivable for debutantes (especially from Switzerland), but still I wanted more (so to speak) thrash variety, and not to reduce everything to cheese in the end. The blood (with severed heads) is present, but strictly dosed out. I will note the visual part of the film. It is very bright.

There are several references to foreign films. For example, Heidi’s training in the “Kill Bill” style.

To sum it up – there is nothing to do here for the average passerby. As for the thrash fans – take your chances. The movie is not without its flaws, but you can watch it once. If the creators of “Mad Heidi” continue in a similar vein and gain more experience, you might get something very cool (within the thrash, of course). The directors are clearly not without talent.

Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars 4K Review
I generally watch the Starship Troopers CG movies looking for ridiculously over-the-top action shlock I can put on with friends and laugh at while being entertained. Traitor of Mars does the trick on this front, but it actually has a pretty good story this time with a cast of lovable shlubs. Whoever came up with the concept of a makeup-caked bimbo Space Marine is exactly the kind of person who should be leading the charge on these Starship Trooler CG flicks.

These sequels are, as you might expect, nowhere remotely close to the verhoeven classic in terms of tone or message, but they surprisingly do a pretty great job of keeping up that same dumb fun 90’s shlock feel that the surface level of first flick had: troopers are sent into the meat grinder time and again by incompetent superiors who are wholly detached from the reality of war. The difference is that, in these CG flicks, Rico will get launched 15 feet into the air, do a flip and jump-kick a giant bug to kill it, and it’ll totally work. Everyone has anime plot armor and every dumb tactical decision can be fought through by shooting enough bullets at it.

In short, it’s close enough to the surface level of the original to keep true, while also being wholly enjoyable shlock to watch with friends. Thought they did a good job with this one.

One of my favourite films, this one.
I love the way Verhoeven approached the idea of Man v Beast. Our “heros” are beautiful, white-teethed Americans, firm of body and morals; our villains are decapitating stick insects, cockroaches, and giant maggots.

Yet who are the real heroes ?

The white-teethed Americans are vacuous, shallow thugs. They are thrust into a war with the Bugs, whose planets, we are told, have been invaded by the Americans. The Bugs are justifiably annoyed.

I couldn’t help but laugh at some of the “Nazi” parallels drawn by other reviewers. What Verhoeven is putting across in this film is not a polemic against Nazi ideology, but an attack upon American Imperialism in the latter part of the last century. He is satirising American crusades against other countries, whose inhabitants are portrayed in the American press as no better than Bugs.

Had Verhoeven wished to attack Nazism, he could have given the good guys German accents; he didn’t, he gave them American accents. The “Nazi” symbolism as commented upon by other reviewers is not Nazi symbolism at all – it is totalitarian symbolism, full stop. It is right-wing, “bomb them back to the stone age” American totalitarianism.

Why do I believe this ?

Check out the scene where American kids are encouraged to stamp on cockroaches by an overly excited parent. Check out the high fives.

Verhoeven has done a mighty job here. He has made a film which has great action, great cinematography, very cute women (and boys) and yet the film still manages to take the mickey out of the New Order in a very funny and effective manner.
