In 1536, the Scotsman Connor MacLeod was slain in battle, but mysteriously resurrected, and his clan banished him. McLeod’s teacher was a Spanish nobleman who explained that they belonged to an immortal race of warriors who could be deprived of life only by decapitation with the sword.

The battle between Macleod and his eternal enemy the Mound, which began in sixteenth-century Scotland, continues in present-day Manhattan. The fate of all mortals depends on the outcome of this battle. It is part of a duel that goes on for centuries.

The year 86 marked the birth of yet another saga of heroes. This time it was really immortal and about the Immortals. And as always the first part, originally conceived as something whole, complete, had a certain success, gained cult status, as a result of which it was decided to shoot the second and third part, and then the series… ‘The idea became a tradition ‘ and lost all its charm. Such a fate alas awaited many films, especially those of a fantasy-heroic nature.

In front of the viewer for almost two hours unfolds the story of the extraordinary life of Connor McLeod. And the director departs from a linear narration and the action, beginning in the present tense, will be interrupted now and then by the main character’s memories of the past, as a result two worlds are recreated in the film. The first, the world of the past is 16th century Scotland. The second is the world of the present. Life has changed, only they, the Immortals, are destined to remain the same. And each of them has one goal – to remain the only one to get the promised reward.

But Connor has a tragedy in his heart in addition to his goal. He wants love and at the same time is afraid to love. He doesn’t want to bury the ones he loves anymore – it’s too painful, too hard. Connor is not devoid of humanity, which makes his character dramatic.

I was initially put off by the beginning of the film – the slashing, the screaming, the crowd’s desire to see someone fall and bleed, but then, drawing parallels between the past and the present, you look at the scene differently. If before people fought for some goals and ideals, now it is for the amusement of the audience. Sad, but such is the truth of life.

So that’s what we have:

Perhaps Christopher Lambert’s most memorable role.

One of the most charismatic and crazy villains played by Clancy Brown.

Unforgettable Scottish scenery (“Braveheart” was definitely filmed somewhere nearby).

One of the best songs ever heard in a movie is Who Wants to Live Forever ‘Queen’.

One of the best films of its kind, capable of pleasing both male and female audiences.

The film now seems old, a little dusty, a little pathosy, but still so familiar. The special effects, of course, now look a little plush, so it is better to discount the age of the picture before watching it. But it’s nothing – the film has its own special atmosphere, spirit of freedom, battles, and in the end – nostalgia for the 80s.

Captain Robert Walton, an explorer obsessed with the manic urge to reach the North Pole at any cost, meets Dr. Victor Frankenstein in the Arctic wilderness, pursuing a mysterious humanoid creature.

Upon learning of the captain’s purpose, Frankenstein tells him his sad and macabre story. Back in his youth, Victor became fascinated with science. And after his mother’s death he was determined to become a scientist and defeat death. His obsession led to terribly tragic consequences for himself and for all his loved ones…

The plot of Mary Shelley’s classic horror novel is a treasure trove for filmmakers. Almost from the earliest years of cinema to the present day, this terrifying tale of a brilliant scientist obsessed with science and his horrific creation has stirred people’s minds. First of all, the novel caught the attention of readers and remains on the list of bestsellers to this day, and secondly, the theme is still quite relevant, and every year is becoming more and more relevant with the development of medicine and genetic technology, and, thirdly, the artistic image of Frankenstein ‘monster’ really wonderfully prescribed, and to create it actors and directors – one pleasure. Stitched from pieces of different human bodies, possessing inhuman strength and not fully formed mind, hate the world of people, hating them and himself, this character has become the embodiment of human horror before death and its irreversible consequences. So no matter how many years pass, Frankenstein’s monster is just as terrifying. It feels human, it has bits of truth in it, unlike Romero’s non-fearful some just reanimated dead men.

There are more than 20 official adaptations of Frankenstein, but it’s impossible to count how many movies have used Shelley’s ideas and the monster she invented. Frankenstein’s name became a nickname and merged in people’s minds into a single monstrous image with his creation. The most famous adaptations of the Gothic novel are considered to be the cult film from 1931, which is considered to be an unrivaled horror classic, and this film, directed by Kenneth Branagh.

Kenneth Branagh is a ‘dark horse’ in cinema, he is known all over the world as a big fan of theater, Shakespeare, classical literature and an adaptation of this, that and the third. Well, Americans didn’t have much support for Branagh’s love of classic literature. That’s why Branagh doesn’t act in America much, and mostly in independent author projects, where he has gained a certain popularity. But most importantly, he found his admirers among the major Hollywood filmmakers.

Looking at the list of people who worked on ‘Frankenstein’, it’s amazing how much you need to get people involved with your ideas, to have Francis Ford Coppola as a producer, to have Frank Derabont correcting the script, and De Niro playing one of the main roles. However, as I said, what mysteries this novel does not contain, and it has many fans – not only among young people, although in Soviet times it was considered a ‘novel for adolescence ‘.

Branagh, as always, approached the film adaptation of the novel in his own way. He did not make a commercial blockbuster or art house drama, he did something in between – an attempt to put in a fascinating thriller Hamlet passions. He succeeded a lot, although the film has many bloopers, inconsistencies, and just omitted, for the sake of fitting the meter, interesting scenes. As a result, the film turned out very well, but crumpled, disjointed, scattered. Branagh should have focused either on Victor Frankenstein’s genius, his torments, the relationship between science and love, the impossibility of them coexisting, and then it would have been an excellent pseudo-biographical film about how genius can do evil while striving for the good, or just make a spectacular story about a monster and Frankenstein chasing his mistake.

Then the movie would have been coherent and would have been an order of magnitude better. Both did not please Branagh. Americans didn’t accept the film at all, despite their beloved De Niro; in Europe it was a hit, but it never became an artistic revelation or a rebirth of a classic.

The film is best viewed as a gripping sci-fi gothic thriller. The film’s atmosphere is maddeningly heavy-handed and unsettling, a piling-on sense of hopelessness and the bitter realisation that Victor Frankenstein lived on Earth at a bad time. Branagh managed to capture the common features of the era – progressive on the one hand, and savage, dark, cruel, terrible on the other. The maddened crowd, chasing a disfigured subhuman with cries of ‘beat the freak’ itself loses its human face and becomes more monstrous than this artificially created life. Man has succeeded in his fear of everything that does not look like him and his passion for destruction.

Much has been accomplished, but something is still missing. Maybe the reason is Bran himself? Of course, to play in his own film and do as he wished, it was much more pleasant for the actor than to follow the instructions of Woody Allen in ‘Celebrity’, but not many are able to shoot themselves. The novel gave Branagh from the beginning excellent artistic material, but he used it in a rather peculiar way. Frankenstein sliced up the experiments, picked up on the tops of his suffering and mental contradictions, grabbed a piece of love for his fiancée and family, did not explain much, hurricane rushed to the final film and did not finish everything. So in the genius of the doctor somehow doubted, and after he gave himself completely to science and almost forgot about his fiancee, in his unearthly love for the heroine Helena Bonham Carter at all do not believe. Many questions are asked of him and remain without a hint of an answer. That’s why Frankenstein himself, a rambunctious character, recedes into the background and his evolving, learning monster, played by De Niro, comes to the fore.

De Niro was originally supposed to be the guarantor of the film’s success in America, but he also became just the film’s lead actor. The monster’s place in the film was limited, but stinginess is no obstacle for a true creator. Instead of a monster, the tragedy of the ‘elephant man’ is before us, not as profound as Lynch’s, but incomparably more vivid than in other screen adaptations of Shelley. The ‘Elephant Man’ is a tragedy, not as deep as Lynch’s, but incomparably more vivid than Shelley’s others. Separated from the world, created for ridicule and abuse, and left for dead, terrified and hardened by fear and pain, trapped, desperate, he finds an outlet in the hatred he unleashes, he avenges his life with blood. If Branagh to play the theme of “can a man become God” failed, but with De Niro has a very tangible image, which even have sympathy. True, he did not bring anything substantial to the image of the monster. When I think of him, my first association is still Karloff’s face: the bags under his eyes, the square head, the thoughtless look, the bolts in his neck… Still, the classics are firmly in my head, this film will never reach such heights and never become a cult film.

‘Frankenstein’, oddly enough, is more of an auteur than a commercial film. It is a strong movie, fascinating, interesting, though not devoid of fussiness, desire to jump over the head and other shortcomings. De Niro is good, Branagh isn’t bad, Carter did well in the role, though there wasn’t much eccentricity in the role for her. It doesn’t suit her to play the usual nice young ladies. I didn’t recognize John Cleese even after the second viewing, although his role is not that small. It’s a good movie which won’t live long in the memory of posterity, but among the adaptations of the novel and movies of the 90’s in general it takes its rightful place.

Bridget Jones starts a diary to describe her achievements and victories: how she will get rid of extra pounds and bad habits, as well as improve her personal life. Parents want to marry her to the neighbors’ son, the modest Mark, and Bridget is crazy about her irresistible boss Daniel. Suddenly, the choice is not easy at all.

4k movies reviews
I think that writing about the merits of the film can take a long time. About a huge number of funny situations and inimitable dialogues (I laughed to tears over Bridget’s culinary masterpieces). The fact that the whole trio played great.

Hugh Grant portrayed a charming (very!) Woman’s heartbreaker who can easily seduce a friend’s wife, and then even blatantly lie, claiming the opposite. He knows how to hang delicious noodles on his ears. But when he speaks of love “once and for all”, one cannot believe one iota. He himself does not understand what he wants. It seems to me that people like him in old age remain rich, but terribly lonely.

Colin Firth’s character, on the other hand, turned out to be a model of kindness, politeness and a special, tacit appeal. Looking at him, you think: “he will not stop loving, he will never forget you.” He does not need to say much, everything can be read in his honest eyes anyway. He’s also very smart, cute, and he dresses beautifully (almost always). And he fights well. All that is missing is the white horse and crown.

Here are just a princess, for whose heart there is a struggle, some kind of wrong. Where is the wasp waist, the golden braid, the heavenly eyes and the angelic voice? Alas, this is not a fairy tale, but ordinary life! Princess Bridget is full of complexes, extra pounds, problems with her personal life and bad habits. Moreover, she is already over thirty. A great excuse to keep a diary and complain about the villainous fate.

However, despite all the shortcomings, Bridget is very pretty, sweet, charming, sociable and knows how to look at life with irony. She looks ridiculous only if she is trying to play a role, and when she remains herself, she looks very sincere, touching and funny. Her friends (also not perfect) support her in everything and constantly give advice.

Bridget dreams of a handsome prince who will kiss her and say the magic words: “I like you the way you are!” And then: “I love you.” And ordinary life will turn into a fairy tale.

4k movie reviews
Summer. Music. Love.
“Mamma Mia! 2 4K“- a direct continuation of the sensational hit a decade ago, which was the adaptation of the musical of the same name, based on the songs of the legendary band ABBA. I have a positive attitude to the original: an extremely unvitaine script is compensated by a star caste, nostalgic songs and chic Greek landscapes. And I will not hide: after learning about the development of the sequel, I was very happy.

The musical was directed by Ol Parker (“Introduce us together, “Now is the time), which previously had a relation to a similar project: he wrote scripts for the “Marigold Hotel dilogy. This time, a new original story was put into circulation and the compositions of the Swedish group, unused in the first tape. Having reviewed this creation, I can confidently state that “Mamma Mia 2! Turned out to be better than its predecessor.

The plot is divided into two arches: the first one tells about the extravagant, full of adventures and love of the life of young Donna, the second is connected with her daughter Sophie, who is going to open their renovated family hotel. To begin, I would like to note the fact of how time is balanced between these lines: about 2/3 of the time spent on retrospective, where the new graduate becoming fascinating becomes, charming romantic adventures with Harry, Bill and Sam, and the character alternates with the excitement and joys of the character Seifred who in the future will have to come to the fore and assume the role of the mother. Simply put, the tape correctly conveys the continuity of generations. In the development of this thought, I also cannot but praise the way the simultaneous similarity (for example, pregnancy) and the opposite (reason and feelings) of the central heroines were demonstrated. The dialogues in the film are uncomplicated, but a couple of interesting thoughts can be endured; Humor is wonderful here: natural and organically incorporated into one or another scene.

I will attribute the following points to scenario shortcomings: many blunders are due to the presence of the original musical, which can be expressed both in the stupid behavior of the characters (Sam trusts the words of the unknown instead of trying to figure it out for himself) and in banal contradictions (different versions of the acquisition of the Donna Hotel); The indicated conflicts are resolved by clicking the fingers, and the viewer simply has to accept the existing coincidences on faith.

The musical numbers and their accompaniment are amazing: the legacy of ABBA is, of course, power! Favorite combos (song + production): “Waterloo (young Harry and Donna), “Why did it have to be me? (Young Bill and Donna), “Fernando (grandma Ruby and the hotel manager), but what about “ Mamma Mia “and” Dancing Queen “I generally keep quiet, better and could not be done. Compositions under the curtain are so emotional that the final turns into a wonderful fairy tale touching and piercing through a tear. I was hooked to the depths of the soul, it was beautiful.

Strangely enough, but most of all in the technical component I was pleased with the clothes: everyone was so cool that they only became more beautiful (the wardrobes of Lily and Colin are especially good). The operator also tried: the picturesque shots of the Greek island of Skopelos (in the film – Kalokairi) are damn amazing. In general, the immersion in the summer atmosphere was a success.

The actor ensemble in the continuation became wider, brighter and more expressive. You know, it seems to me, each role for an artist can be perceived in two ways: 1) work, where the actor only performs the function, works out his fee; 2) full immersion when you ideally fit into the image assigned to you and catch the buzz from the process. Lily James is in this case the second type: she is impossibly charming, sweet and attractive. The first time I thought that the British woman would not have enough of the core that Meryl Streep had to be at the forefront, but thanks to her energy and the qualities listed above, Lily proves that no one would fit the role of young Donna more than she. In general, almost all the younger generation plays out perfectly: from the devoted friends of Tanya and Rosie to the charismatic Bill and Harry. Only Sam was slightly lost, hesitated. Cast from the last part also does not lose ground: Stellan Skarsgard and Julie Walters look organically together, and the line of their relationship is almost the best in the picture. But I also have reproaches to the creators: on the screen there is a criminally little magnificent Colin Firth and Cher did not fit into the family (she seems to be superfluous, and her emotions are constrained by a ton of makeup).

“Mamma Mia! 2 is a kind, charming, soulful musical and officially the most summer film of the season. The best thing you can do in the last days of August is to go to this movie: you will leave the room with the knowledge that it is good to live, and it would be nice to go to Greece …

8 out of 10
