Step back in time to the wild and untamed West with “Paint Your Wagon,” a 1969 musical western directed by Joshua Logan. Set against the backdrop of the California Gold Rush, the film follows the adventures of two prospectors, Ben Rumson (played by Lee Marvin) and Pardner (played by Clint Eastwood), as they strike it rich and build a thriving mining town.

As the town of No-Name Springs flourishes, Ben and Pardner find themselves entangled in a web of love, greed, and ambition. When Elizabeth, the beautiful wife of a Mormon preacher, arrives in town, she captures the hearts of both men, leading to a love triangle that threatens to tear the community apart.

Against this backdrop of romantic drama, “Paint Your Wagon” also explores themes of friendship, loyalty, and the pursuit of the American Dream. As the prospectors and their fellow settlers grapple with the challenges of frontier life, including harsh weather, economic hardship, and social upheaval, they must confront the complexities of human nature and the price of success.

Featuring a memorable soundtrack that includes such classics as “Wand’rin’ Star” and “I’m On My Way,” as well as stunning cinematography that showcases the rugged beauty of the American wilderness, “Paint Your Wagon” is a cinematic spectacle that captures the spirit of adventure and discovery that defined the era of westward expansion. With its compelling characters, lively musical numbers, and epic storytelling, the film continues to enchant audiences with its timeless tale of love, loss, and redemption.

I’ve always been surprised by some of the synopses for movies. It’s as if the authors of the movie they’re writing the synopsis for just haven’t seen it.

It’s the same with ‘The Tramp’! Well, the man with no name was not the sheriff of the town of ‘Lago’! Sheriff Douglas was killed and buried, though they forgot to write his name on his grave. These characters are also played by different actors.

The plot of this western is much deeper and more interesting than the usual revenge against bandits and cowardly townspeople. The townspeople, no one but the bandits were not even going to get revenge: Eastwood’s hero did everything he could so that this time they could stand up for themselves. However, cowardice took over again.

The Man With No Name is beautifully expressed in the words of Sarah: ‘the dead don’t rest without a marker of some kind’ – ‘the dead can’t rest until someone does something good’. And that is why the residents of the town are afraid of strangers (again, according to Sara). It is also worth noting that it is not for nothing that the episode in which the sheriff curses the townspeople for inaction and cowardice is repeated twice in the film, which gives rise to the idea that it was the Nameless One who was sent to the townspeople as a punishment.

It is ‘some kind’ that the Nameless Man has come to do, while remembering to treat some of the townspeople as they deserve to be treated. And with a peculiar sense of humor.

There is definitely something mystical about ‘The Tramp’. Almost all of the actions of the nameless hero, from the strange revenge for the brutally murdered sheriff to forcing the residents to paint the entire town red (infernal).

Recidivist Frank Morris is transferred to the high-security prison-island of Alcatraz. He had previously escaped from several other prisons. Noticing that the newcomer has a high IQ on the questionnaire, on his first day he is summoned by the warden and warned that it is impossible to escape from his institution, but Frank does not think so.

User Review
Alcatraz is an island in the U.S. state of California, San Francisco Bay, used as a military prison and then as an ultra-secure prison for extremely dangerous criminals. There is only one known case of successful escape in its history, that of Frank Morris, an American bank robber, along with brothers John and Clarence Anglin, on June 11, 1962.

The plot was based on the story of this particular amazing, puzzling and elaborate escape. Frank Morris, who was serving a life sentence in The Rock, was thought to have authored it.

Frank Morris – born September 1, 1926, in Washington, D.C. Committed his first crime at the age of 13. For his colorful list of offenses, ranging from drug use to armed robbery, he has spent time in various prisons across America. He repeatedly escaped from them due to his high level of intelligence (his IQ was 133). After his escape from Alcatraz on June 11, 1962, he was officially considered missing.

The role of Frank Morris was played in the film by Clint Eastwood. I consider Eastwood’s choice for the role of the main character to be a good one. Because the charisma and exceptional acting ability of this man allowed him to fit quite well into the image of his character and make it interesting and exemplary for the audience.

It took his character seven months to prepare for his escape. Director Don Siegel, of course, reduced the seven months to two hours, creating a great atmosphere in the film. Segel masterfully shows the plot development, bringing us into the plot at the beginning and the environment of what happens and gradually, closer to the end, heating up the atmosphere of the escape to the limit, creating it with masterly logic chain which we follow from the start to the end together with the main characters, getting the feeling of making the escape and frantically trying to leave so tiresome walls of Alcatraz.

Among the films on the subject ‘Escape from Alcatraz’ is certainly one of the best, because it’s based on a fascinating, interesting and real story, which you won’t see anywhere else.

Westerns are a very specific genre and I deliberately ignore them. I don’t like the Wild West and everything associated with it – Indians, cowboys, grim superheroes sipping whiskey and spitting greens, girls in corsets, and towns consisting of one street with a tumbleweed running through it. It doesn’t move me. It’s different when we see an ironic western like ‘Young Guns’ or a parody of it, like ‘Moccasins Manitou’. But this Sergio Leone film has a cult following in the film community. A classic of classics. Naturally, I didn’t want to miss the film, which became an event of the 60’s, especially since I quite respect Eastwood, both as an actor and as a director.

It seems that it was this film that made Eastwood a superstar and the king of the genre. Well, well deservedly so. When this picture was shown on the screen, both the male and female sex went crazy for Clint. I understand them – Mr. Eastwood is a hero in the truest sense of the word. A born leader, an absolute man, a real ‘cool’ in the terms of the Wild West natives. Such powerful charisma and appeal emanates from him, we want to imitate him (it is not for nothing that he has so many parodists), we want to copy him.

That unhurried walk of a very confident man, that lack of words, that squint, that sangfroid and iron composure in all situations, that nobility and honesty, that shrewd mind that never lets feelings take over, that loyal and strong hand, those sharp eyes. You’d like to strap a Colt .45 on your belt, which would be your most faithful friend and helper, and cleanse the world of bastards… Yes, the image of Clint Eastwood really got great, it’s easy to guess why he was stamped so long in one genre – try to give up the role, if it is written for you!

Now that the actor has played many other roles, revealed himself as a talented director, we can talk about a really big and original film auteur, then Eastwood has developed only a mask, a permanent image, which will be exploited many times, like all the successful findings Leone.

Otherwise, the film is a traditional spaghetti western from head to toe. Slowly unfolding action, taking place ostensibly on the state border with Mexico, a main superhero single-handedly saving the town from a gang of hideous murderous freaks, spectacular appearances by the hero, snatching the Colt from its holster, ‘meaningful’, ‘weighty’ phrases thrown in the face of the bandit by the hero, grateful rescues, the obligatory tumbleweeds, horseback chases, a loyal friend and sweet revenge… It’s all done well, but since I don’t like Westerners, I wasn’t particularly moved by it. Good production, all right and traditional, a bit boring.

As you know, the Western has long since buried itself, and I think the problem is that for 30 years the genre was stewing in its own juice, without admitting any new trends. And in the end it became a swamp that sucked in all the former western stars, directors and actors, and thank God for some, like Eastwood, who were above the genre and proved their ability to adapt to the changing world of cinema. The Western is a monotonous, rigid, inflexible genre. And it ruined Leone’s great beginnings.

The Italian western had outlived its usefulness, now it’s a classic, a story. Naturally, it’s one of the best examples of a genre unnecessary in modern terms. Incidentally, in America, the film didn’t come out until three years after it was released in Italy. Apparently, the Americans have been looking at it for a long time, testing it for viability. Well, the film is quite capable of living even now on the shelves of cinephiles, lovers of classics, Westerns or Eastwood. The fact that this is a remake of the Japanese ‘Bodyguard’ – does not play a big role. It’s just that a successful and popular plot has been taken as a basis and thoroughly reworked. It is not the kind of thing modern remake-makers do – they rip off word for word and even contrive to disgrace the original. Leone’s film not only failed to disgrace its predecessor, but, perhaps, even made it famous.

What else is there to note? The iconic music of Enrico Morriccone, which has been the subject of dozens of similar films. What do we have in the end? A worthy film of an artificially created genre, which became part of history and a milestone in cinema, thanks to the work of legendary personalities. The fact that the film is one of the most quoted in the world cinema (just remember the bright scene in ‘Back to the Future 3’ that parodies the episode with the iron plate under the cape) and one of the films that inspired many authors for their opuses is worthy of all respect.

Making a few extra dollars honestly in the Wild West is not a problem if you have a trusted colt and a permit from the authorities to shoot gangsters. That’s the way professional bounty hunters “The Man With No Name” and Colonel Mortimer go side by side, whose common target is the criminal gang of the Mexican Indio.

4k movies reviews
The hallmark of Sergio Leone’s best films is their adherence to the “one-breath” rule. Here is For a Few Dollars More, “the golden mean of the dollar trilogy,” a film that can be credited to the great Italian and is watched with breathtaking ecstasy. From the first chords of the inimitable musical theme by Maestro Morricone, which accompanies the traditionally animated credits, to the final “The End” (to the same tune), the viewer completely dissolves into the action. He plunges into the famous atmosphere of spaghetti westerns. He enters a Wild West swarming with greedy thugs who place no value on human life and heroes who bring justice but do not forget about their own gain!

“Where life is worthless, sometimes death has its value. That is why murderous hunters have appeared.” This is the opening line that sketches the direction that the gradually unfolding flywheel of events will take us. Meet Colonel Mortimer, the owner of an imperturbable appearance and an impressive gun arsenal. Bounty hunter number one. By order of appearance in the film, but not by status. Though he personally does not doubt his superiority, there is a Man With No Name ready to argue with that. Meet: another bounty hunter, nevertheless bearing the pseudonym “Manco” (translated from Italian as “one-armed”), wearing his trademark poncho and hat, with the traditional cigar in his mouth. Both protagonists are no strangers to the dirty and unsafe work of shooting criminals of all sorts and stripes. They welcome any opportunity to get a few dollars more. And the colonel has his own special interest in this business.

Meanwhile, a group of recidivist gangsters comes into play. The leader is a rare scoundrel nicknamed “Indian”. Under his command there have gathered about ten and a half men, for the head of each of which the sum of money is due. The Indian manages to free himself from unreliable prison, takes vicious revenge on his abuser, and begins planning to rob a major bank.

It is clear that a meeting between the Colonel and the “Man with No Name” and the members of this gang cannot be avoided. All that remains are the details. On them, on these nuances, periodically using his trademark tricks, appropriately imposing terrific music of Morricone’s classmate, playing with the plot and the audience interest, Leone builds his film. Watching it in the same breath and for four decades now, it’s been astonishing.

Leone has always paid great attention to drawing out the characters, as well as revealing the motives and aspects of their conflict. The maddening, eye-rolling, laughter of the Indian. The uncompromising, instilling confusion and fear in the bandit souls of the bounty hunters. All of them, bad and good, are brutal to the point of trembling at the knees, marked to admiring amazement, desperately bold and determined. All have a temper, steeper than the cliffs of the Grand Canyon (despite the fact that the film was shot far away from them: on another continent, in sunny Spain). Most of the shots in the film are fired with filigree precision, balancing on the edge between mild exaggeration and outright hyperbole. Although there is “empty fire”, i.e. not following the principle “one shot – one victim”, but it is sporadic and made only by the statistic bandits. Yes, those details and touches again. They’re the juice of the story.

The conflict of the three main characters takes different forms over the course of the action, reveals new details and is only finally resolved in the final minutes. Supported by the use of flashbacks and pumped up the occasional melody of a pocket watch intrigue leads to not much original, but certainly heartfelt ending.

In conclusion, I want to talk about the very much appreciated by fans of the “trilogy” ligament of Eastwood and Van Cleef’s characters. In the pursuit of the long dollar, they join forces. After all, the members of the Indian gang, these living trophies, a lot, and to hold detention with the elements of disarming will be much easier on the pair. Such an alliance couldn’t help but astonish those viewers who, by the will of fate, were first introduced to “The Good, the Bad, the Evil.” And maybe some of them were inspired by a fantasy along the lines of “I wish Blondie and Angel Eyes were on the same side of the barricades!” Dreams come true.

Menko and Colonel Mortimer. They are doubly faster, more accurate, and smarter. Of course, they are not invincible, but they are very, very dangerous. Interestingly enough, with only five years of age difference between the actors, throughout the film they ironically refer to each other as “old man” and “boy” in joint scenes. Well, how about the unforgettable “bravo!” Eastwood, accompanying every successful action of the colonel. Their relationship is permeated by mutual rivalry and, at the same time, great respect. In one of the final dialogues, when one asks, “How about a partnership?” the other replies, “Maybe another time!” But there won’t be another time. In the plot of “The Good, the Bad, the Evil,” they will turn out to be adversaries. So we’re left to seize the moment, enjoying the on-screen duo of Eastwood and Van Cleef, empathizing with their adventures with all our hearts. We are rewarded with a delightfully suspenseful and relaxing ending with some entertaining arithmetic.

Both literally and figuratively.

Clint Eastwood’s new film clearly demonstrates that Eastwood is still good in his 90s, both as a director and as an actor.

Here he plays an elderly cowboy and former rodeo star, Michael Milo, who was injured as a young man after falling from a horse. And then he also loses his wife and child. He calmly lives out his life, drowning out his pain with alcohol, when suddenly his boss offers him a ‘job’ – to take his son from Mexico, with whom his wife fled several years ago. Milo agrees, but it turns out to be not an easy task – after all, the boy is out of tune with the law, and his mother is not going to just let him go.

At first, it seems that the film is about constant pursuit and the dangers that lie in wait for the heroes at every turn. But this is just a screen. In fact, this is a very soulful road movie about human relationships. Milo immediately becomes sympathetic to the 13-year-old boy, and practically replaces his father for the duration of their trip. They also meet a kind Mexican woman on the way, who provides them with accommodation and food. Milo even starts an affair with her.

So this is no longer ‘Gran Torino’ and not ‘Drug Courier’ in terms of drama. Here, more attention is paid to the spiritual moments. Although Eastwood showed his former ‘coolness’ a couple of times, hitting one of the pursuers in the face, and then threatening him with his own pistol, like an old Dirty Harry. The ending, however, turned out to be quite sharp, as it seemed to me. As if the film had just ended abruptly.

On the whole, the film left a pleasant impression, and Eastwood once again pleased with his incredible charisma and old man’s wisdom.

On that ill-fated day when President Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Frank Horrigan was among the guards. Memories of an unfulfilled mission have kept him awake for years.

30 years later, a psychopathic maniac who threatens to kill the president chooses Frank as a target for pursuit. And in this dangerous game, only willpower will decide who will survive …

4k movies reviews
What is going on in the head of a person who is going to commit an assassination attempt on the head of his country? What special chemical processes occur in his brain, as a result of which he takes this path? What makes him scrupulously, day after day, month after month, develop a murder plan, calculate his every action dozens of steps ahead?

Such questions, however, hardly worried Secret Service agent Frank Horrigan. On that autumn evening, he was busy with more practical matters, leaving theoretical reflections to analysts. A few days earlier, a woman called the Secret Service and said that someone who rented an apartment in her house, a certain McGreevy, was fond of collecting materials about the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Frank had to check who this McGreevy was and whether he posed a real threat. It turned out that the sphere of interests of this person could not but alert. Alertness soon turned into suspicion when it was revealed that McGreevy had used the name.
a person who died two decades ago.

A re-examination of the apartment gave new food for thought: all the rooms were empty, and a photograph of young Horrigan, guarded by J.F.K., hung lonely on the bare wall. on that same unfortunate day, November 22, 1963, just a few minutes before half past midday. An evening call to Horrigan dotted the i’s. The unknown person introduced himself as John Bus and said that he was going to kill the President of the United States. So, the game, so far understandable only to the future killer, began.

The very name John Booth (John Wilkes Booth) should have become another proof of the seriousness of the impending assassination attempt. That was the name of the actor who shot the sixteenth American president on April 15, 1865. But the investigation has not yet yielded any results.

Horrigan’s choice as a partner-opponent in this game seemed almost perfect to the unknown assassin. After all, Frank, the only active Secret Service agent who allowed Kennedy’s death, was still acutely worried about this failure. Therefore, the veteran agent’s confidence that the current Bus will be able to repeat the “feat” of his predecessor was in great doubt. On which the calculating killer relied. Only his young partner Al D’Andrea and colleague Lilly Rains trust him unconditionally. But this is not enough.

Elections are coming soon, and the current president is losing to his rival. Potential failure means for many politicians the loss of their prestigious positions and the end of their own careers. Therefore, they are annoyed by an excessively active bodyguard, which creates unnecessary difficulties. So Horrigan was
again removed, first from the protection of the President, and then from the investigation itself.

And the killer, step by step, carries out his carefully prepared plan. And no one, and nothing, it seems, is no longer able to stop him …

There was no Troy, no AF1, no Perfect Storm yet. In 1993, German director Wolfgang Petersen was not yet able or unwilling to sacrifice an interesting, clever story and great acting in the sacrifice of ostentatious, Hollywood “blockbuster”. Perhaps that is why “On the Line of Fire” still, despite its solid, by cinematic standards, age, looks lively and interesting.

Moreover, I want to revise it, although the storylines, and the ending itself, are already well known and there can be no question of any effect of surprise. Nevertheless, every time you get from watching the real pleasure, watching the development of the plot and the magnificent acting. The wonderful music of Ennio Morricone also contributes its very important share.

Among the many characters played by Clint Eastwood, the role of Secret Service agent Frank Horrigan, in my opinion, is one of the best and most memorable. But at first glance, there is nothing unusual in this hero. It would seem that what new can be introduced into this image? Here it turns out that real talent can handle a lot and that he will be able to show himself even within such strictly defined boundaries. And even push these boundaries as wide as possible
– for your own special, individual position. Does anyone dare to argue that Clint Eastwood is not capable of such a thing?

Rene Russo (Lilly Rains) plays the role that she succeeds most of all: a real “blue stocking”, behind this outwardly poisonous, mocking and inaccessible shell hiding a thin and easily vulnerable, feminine soul. It is this Rene that can be found in many of her films. And this is what I like the most.

The role of Al D’Andrea is one of the first in Dylan McDermont’s track record. It is a pity that this young and very talented actor only occasionally appears on the big screen. D’Andrea in his performance is a young agent of the USSS, who, as they say, is not at ease. This work and the life it defines is not for him. He not only lacks experience, but also a vocation for her. Al tries his best to be like Horrigan, but at the same time maintains his personality.

In such a cool company, the only villain cannot be that pesky-picture-maniac killer common in Hollywood. No, he must be a worthy adversary, not making a single ill-considered, erroneous step, who is ready to go to the end, just to carry out his devilish plan. Who, at first glance, is no different from any of us, and only by looking into his eyes, one can understand that he intends to coolly cut off one (is it not enough?) Human life.

Nobody, except him, can be so transformed in each new episode. Then he is a respectable businessman, so gentle and courteous. But the next second, a mad, inhuman fire flares up in his eyes, and his body, by no means superman, suddenly explodes with a lightning-fast, murderous throw. Is it possible to recognize him in a harmless bespectacled man who, it seemed, is not capable of offending even a fly?

And his voice: faded, even, completely devoid of any emotion. And then, quite unexpectedly, such anger flares up in him, such aggression, mixed with such hatred that all doubts immediately go away – yes, he will not back down, he will not stop, even if he has to pay for it with his own life. It’s all one person. This is John Malkovich. His game is brilliance!

In conclusion, I would like to say that “On the Line of Fire”, no doubt, has everything you need to become a real masterpiece: an interesting plot, by no means flat, “with character” characters and magnificent, otherwise you would not say, acting. And he is confidently included in a not very large number of my favorite films.

In the midst of the civil war, a mysterious shooter wanders across the vastness of the Wild West. He has no home, no friends, no companions until he meets two strangers who are just as ruthless and cynical.

By the will of fate, three men are forced to join their efforts in search of the stolen gold. But working together is not the most suitable occupation for notorious bandits like them. The companions soon realize that on their daring and dangerous journey through a war-torn country, the most important thing is not to trust anyone and keep a gun ready if you want to stay alive.

In 1966, the final film from the famous “dollar” trilogy of the Italian director Sergio Leone entitled “The Good, the Bad, the Ugly” was released. Leone directed perhaps one of the most controversial Westerns in film history. The Italian has completely rewritten all the current laws of the genre, adding to the resulting dish several branded director’s spices. “The Good, the Bad, the Ugly” is the epitome of the spaghetti western and one of its unattainable peaks. It was, undoubtedly, a worthy ending to the entire series, rather unusual by the standards of that time. A kind of crown. The unusual thing was that, formally, in all parts of the trilogy, one of the main characters was the so-called “man without a name” (Clint Eastwood). Only each picture is autonomous in itself and is a separate film, not related to the rest of the films in the series.

More than forty years have passed, and Leone’s western has been and remains an undoubted classic. He has become a kind of phenomenon. He was taken away for quotes, and future famous directors of our time, such as John Woo, Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez and Steven Spielberg, learned to shoot him. Some scenes from the western “The Good, the Bad, the Ugly” were repeated in the domestic cinema: in the films “The Elusive Avengers” and “At home among strangers, a stranger among friends.” Leone destroyed the old myth and created a new one on its wreckage, with its own rules and canons. Further events begin, which were destined to turn into a legend.

In the sixties of the last century, the western genre was gradually dying. There was a situation described by the classics – something had to be changed urgently. The traditions of John Ford, Fred Zinnemann and others were decrepit and in need of revision. The brave and gallant cowboys, strong and a little tired of the constant shootings and rescue of villages in general, and pretty ladies in particular, are pretty tired of the viewer. Leone repeated several times – “Westerns have sunk into psychology, the West has been conquered by ordinary people, and I am trying to show this strength and simplicity in my paintings.”

The director adhered to such a simple formula throughout the entire trilogy. His characters are not at all heroes in the usual sense of the word. They are not characterized by worries and thoughts. Leone dispels the heroic aura of the soldiers of fortune, does not hesitate to demonstrate violence on the screen (which will then untie the hands of many directors who came to the cinema after him) and in every possible way takes away from the viewer the opportunity for affection and sympathy.

In fact, a free shooter roaming from series to series is not the same character. However, if we expand the framework of perception a little, then the “man without a name” is a genre archetype that evolves from film to film, completely losing the cliché left over from previous works. Leone’s person changes along with the course of history. With each picture of the trilogy, the heroes become tougher. After all, they are put on the brink of survival, and in such a position there is no time for romantic actions. “The Good, the Bad, the Ugly” is not so much about the war as about people who find themselves in difficult circumstances and united by one common goal.

The cunning director deliberately confuses the viewer, showing in the last film not only the aforementioned imperturbable Eastwood in his trademark unwashed poncho, but also the character of Lee Van Cliff. And if the Italian managed to attract (as planned) Jean-Marie Volonte to the role of the Evil, then the entire original cast of the film “A few dollars more” would be reunited on the set. The plot is looped, and the same characters play it out. But every time with new shades. With each subsequent film in the trilogy, Leone has a growing number of main characters. Now there are three of them: Evil, Bad, Good.

This division is extremely arbitrary. Even an advertising poster does not give an unambiguous answer – who is who, the portraits are scattered chaotically. After all, with equal success, each of them could become good, and bad, and evil. Under war conditions, morality is often lost, and completely different forces come to take its place.

Introductory musical chords by Ennio Morricone against the background of unpretentious credits immediately set the tone for the whole story. Uncompromising and formidable, like the howling of hyenas, where a shot from a revolver resembles a short and quick crack of a whip and human life depends on one split second. Leone consistently uses the motives of the previous two parts, summing up all the work done – whether it is serving two masters at once or the pursuit of a “potential” victim.

Blondie, Angel Eyes and Tuco. The last of their kind. They have not learned anything in their lives, except how to shoot accurately. But now they are an endangered species, and they need to stick together. The era of making easy money is gone. Now every peasant has a weapon and is able to defend himself. Blondie (Clint Eastwood) and Tuco (Eli Wollek) trade by deceiving the honest population, arranging ostentatious shows, and Angel Eyes (Lee VanCleef) fulfills orders of competitors, enforcing sentences. Everything changes on the day when the bandits learn about the loss of a large consignment of gold in the desert. And everyone understands that this is the last chance. And all three bite into him with their teeth.

The strangest and most memorable journey in the history of cinema begins. Blondie, Tuco and Angel Eyes are three pieces of one big puzzle, the key to treasure. Their road runs through a devastated country, across the border of two states. The path resembles a post-apocalyptic picture: mountains of corpses and dying, destroyed buildings, burnt fields. Leone is ruthless to her heroes. They are only pale shadows of a glorious past. The violence they commit is a hundredfold overshadowed by the atrocities committed in the war. And in this chaos there is only one goal – to get to the money before the others. Life and gold acquire an equal meaning in the eyes of adventurers.

And here and now, it is only important who does not flinch. Music, “Mexican stand-off” (when three people simultaneously point weapons at each other), large superplanes, which clearly show the inner tension of the heroes, and minutes that last for an eternity. At this moment, there are no good and bad, but there are fast and dead.

“I cannot see America except through the eyes of a European. Obviously, it is fascinating and terrifying at the same time. ”

“There is only one difference between a samurai and an assassin: samurai have been known for many centuries, and hired killers have not been known for more than several decades. They are no different anymore. ”

These are also the words of the famous Italian. A person who has seen the true essence of America and debunked Hollywood’s notions of his own history. In the slow-motion rhythm of the narration, the emphasized naturalism of what is happening and full authenticity, the features of the author’s unique style can be traced.

“We all have a little bit of ‘Good, bad and evil’ in each of us.” The connoisseur of human nature, the Italian Sergio Leone, is all in this phrase. He himself is good, and bad, and evil. Genius.

Clint Eastwood in Hollywood is not just a long-liver, but a real living legend, which everyone knows as a star of the Westren, and loves him for his charisma, and appreciates the director’s talent for “Baby in a Million” and “Gran Torino”. Eastwood no longer needs to prove anything to anyone – he has been accepted by the cinema for a long time, we respect and even honor him. So now Clint is shooting a movie for his own pleasure – he just wants to tell a story, and he tells it. And he cannot but be respected for it. Because, firstly, he achieved such status, reputation and opportunities on his own, and secondly, he still does his job with his characteristic quality and enviable professionalism. Which once again proves the just-released “Drug Tracker (The Mule, 2018), which, with one of its trailers, drove the sophisticated viewer to the movies.

Is this film worthy of awards? It is difficult to say, given that they have bypassed him this year (perhaps we will hear about him again next year), but we have an unusually high-quality crime drama. Not like the usual strong representatives of the genre like the masterpieces of Mann or Scorsese. This is an independent film, the author of which does not copy anyone (except perhaps a bit like the Cohen brothers), he does everything himself, in his own handwriting, which is captivating. The picture’s narration is not urgent, there will not be bright skirmishes or chases (if only a little bit, and then the driving and exciting this spectacle can not be called), the speed of story telling fully coincides with the age and activity of the main character (and he is quite active – it’s necessary to decide to carry drugs by centners at ninety years!), Which, although it is a criminal, causes sympathy, pity, a share of respect.

Before us is a veteran of the Second World War, an exemplary worker, a lover of flowers and a gardener, but a disgusting husband and father, who constantly missed all important family dates and holidays, could not please his family. And he decided to correct his life by responding to the offer “to earn some money.” The plot of the film is very simple in appearance, it can fit into a short article of the newspaper, but the most interesting part of this story is its real basis. The film is based on real events, which stirs interest in the film.

The drama of the picture, in many ways, lies precisely in the issue of attention that a person gives to the family. Because of the eternal haste and desire to arrange their lives, people often spend all their time and energy not on what they need, and only at the end of life with experience they realize that they were wrong. “It’s impossible to buy time, the main character constantly repeats the character Bradley Cooper, and it’s impossible not to disagree by watching him constantly apologize to his family. Eastwood plays his role just fine, he lives in the frame of the life of a complex person with a complex history, but deserving of such a film incarnation. You look at this lovely grandfather, such “divine dandelion, and it is simply impossible to treat him negatively, although he and the viewer very quickly realize that he is a criminal. Which is very well shown in the final. By the way, without humor in the picture, too, nowhere – and he is also connected with our granddaddy, who is still “hoo and capable of many things, which he more than once surprises both the characters of the film and the viewer. And it really will be fun.

And this film is the struggle of the old generation and the new. Twentieth Century and Twenty-first. Conservatism and future changes. If the first here is Eastwood himself, then the second is his main star from the “Sniper”, Bradley Cooper, who played here the drug control operative, who comes to see Earl (this is the name of the old courier). And Cooper is really good here. With his past images (including law enforcement), this image has little in common. Here, in all seriousness, Cooper is playing a slick opera, famously unwinding a really important thing from the bullshit. The vivid image of a person who really lives his work, and constantly disappears on it, which in turn is noticed by the hero Eastwood, pointing out to the young special agent that this could harm the family. Their relationship is very interesting against the background of the game between themselves in cat and mouse, although they are barely familiar, but it is the criminal and the federal who form the most powerful and interesting duet in this film, which with its chemistry even more stimulates interest in the climax. We can not say about the young star, the beautiful Taissa Farmiga, who played the granddaughter of the protagonist. When she is in the frame, her eyes can not be removed. Michael Pe?a and Lawrence Fishburne in the role of the feds (Lawrence, as always, the demanding chief of the protagonist, Cooper) provided some good support to a couple of the main actors, and as additional familiar faces in the frame were credited. Special thanks for the lighted in a small role (as always the drug lord) Andy Garcia – for a long time this remarkable actor was not visible on the big screen.

Well, for which it is worth separately to praise the film – this is for the camera work. The constant taste of the protagonist from various angles of the chic Lincoln protagonist (also a kind of humorous moment when the granddaddy changes the old battered pickup to a brand new off-road vehicle of premium class) forget that the main character lives on these trips, has lived with them all his life, and it is with the help of the excellent work of the operator that they have found such a thing in such a life.

User Reviews
That’s right. I’m just a fella now. I ain’t no different than anyone else no more.
William Munny (Clint Eastwood taking the lead and directing the piece) is an old and retired gunman who’s past misdemeanours would make the devil himself seem tame. Widowed and struggling to raise his two children on a paltry farm, he’s tempted out of retirement for one last pay dirt job, the consequence of which provides violence: both physically and of the soul.

Clint Eastwood signed off from the Western genre with this magnificent 1992 picture, the appropriation and irony of which is in itself a majestic point of reference. After the script had been knocking around for nigh on twenty years (written by Blade Runner scribe David Webb Peoples), Eastwood seized the opportunity to play William Munney and lay bare the mythologies of the Wild West. What is most amazing about Unforgiven’s screenplay is how we the audience are firmly on Munney’s side, we are, incredibly, influenced by Eastwood’s part in the history of the Western. In spite of Munney’s obvious murky past (despicable crimes they be), we wait (and hope) for Munney to make a quip and way-lay the bad guys; actually, salivating at the prospect is probably closer to the truth. So it’s with enormous credit that Eastwood, and his magnificent cast and crew, manage to fuddle all our respective perceptions of the West and the characters we ourselves have aged with. It’s not for nothing that W.W. Beauchamp (Saul Rubinek) is the critical character that nobody expected. Beauchamp is a writer of penny pulpy novels that tell of derring-do heroics, gunslingers with a glint in their eye and death dealt like an heroic encore, this gives Unforgiven its excellent sleight of hand, this West is grim and a destroyer of all illusions. Download 4k Unforgiven 1992 blu-ray remux.

Eastwood is greatly served by the actors around him here, Morgan Freeman, Gene Hackman (winning the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for a script he turned down many years before!), Rubinek, Frances Fisher, Anna Thomson, Jaimz Woolvett and an incredible cameo from Richard Harris. Along with Hackman’s win for his brutally tough portrayal of Sheriff “Little Bill” Daggett, Unforgiven also won Oscars for Eastwood for his clinically tight direction, Best Picture, Best Editing and was nominated for in another five categories. One of those nominations was for Jack Green’s cinematography, which now, in this age of High Definition enhanced cinema, can be seen in all its wonderful glory. The Alberta location is magically transformed into the western frontier, with the orange and brown hues a real treat for the eyes. Ultimately, tho, Unforgiven is a lesson in brilliant film making, across the board it works so well, why? Well because the man at the helm knows this genre so well, having been its sole flag bearer for practically 25 years, and learning from his peers, Eastwood has crafted a thematically complex piece that for all its violence, debunking and melancholy pulse beats, is a film that is as beautiful as it is most assuredly stark, an incredible and true highlight of modern day cinema.
