The Scary Story of Coraline, or the Triumphant Return of Henry Selick

I’ve been waiting a long time for Henry Selick’s new work, after the brilliant ‘Nightmare Before Christmas’, which has become an integral part of my New Year’s Eve celebrations year after year. But this wait was sweet.

There were a lot of questions swirling around in my head, a bunch of fears and apprehensions. What if the new movie wasn’t to my liking? What if it would be weaker than the legendary ‘Nightmare’? And so on, winding down the spiral.

But when the trailer lightened our hearts a little, the shots flashing like in a kaleidoscope fascinated, and when it became clear that the film was released in Russia, using 3D technology, the interest increased even more times …

And thanks to the pre-release screening five days before the official premiere, I saw the film today: the hall full of people, children’s cries, popcorn crunching, adults’ conversations can be heard, but everything stops in a moment, when they ask to put on the glasses and get ready for watching ‘Coraline in the Nightmare Land’ in 3D format.

Would you like to have a perfect family, where dad and mom are always smiling at you, ready to play with you at any second, and most importantly in their ability to make all your innermost dreams come true?

The most incredible dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the most beautiful baby clothes, a magical garden of the most beautiful flowers of trees that form your face, tickets to the unusual circus, where you become a member of the air flights, a neighbor who only smiles and does not disturb the chatter and much more.

You think about it for now, but don’t rush to an answer, for everything has its own other side of the coin, or, as they say, free cheese only in a mousetrap….

And in this time Coraline will dive headfirst into all these delights of life, because the real mom and dad are so far away from other moms and dads, forever busy, do not want to buy nice gloves and so on down the list of the usual routine problems.

The only downside that the ambitious girl with the pretty name Coraline faces is replacing her real eyes with buttons, for everyone in the parallel world of endless joy and fun has buttons instead of real eyes.

At this point, Coraline’s rose-colored glasses are blown away in a hurricane wind, but unfortunately, too late… From this moment the worst adventures of Coraline in the Land of Nightmares begin, where not only her life and well-being are at stake, but also the lives of her real parents, as well as the shackled souls of the deceived children…

During this hour and a half and a penny, I experienced a lot of emotions from joy to deep sadness, from a feeling of complete unity to goosebumps, but most importantly I was satisfied, because all my hopes for the most anticipated cartoon of the year came true.

Henry Selick after 16 years after the brilliant ‘Nightmare Before Christmas’ created ‘Coraline in Nightmareland’ and as I think the last cartoon is not inferior to the first, interesting story, unusual cartoon characters, in a word in the best traditions of the cartoon works of Tim Burton, such as ‘Vincent’ and ‘Corpse Bride’.

So especially to all fans of the works of Henry Selick and Tim Burton I strictly recommend to watch, I hope you will not be disappointed!

This film should obviously be included in the list of the ’50 most shocking films’. But I will say more, he seems to unite and summarize them. Have you ever been bothered and horrified by the movie Hounded? So this film seems to be another variation on the theme. At the same time, all with the same Dakota Fanning. I do not know why this sweet girl is so attracted to directors who intend to make films based on such bloodthirsty violent scenarios, but she seems to be becoming one of the main representatives of the genre.

The film is called ‘Underworld’ for a reason. It contains almost all the sins that a person can come to mind. Violence, prostitution, incest, murder, animal abuse and more. A portion of hate for the rest of your life. Throughout the film you are waiting for at least a bit of pity for the heroes, for some light at the end of the tunnel. But ahead is only a gaping void, irreversibility. (Although even if you recall something similar in the manner of narration of Gaspar Noe’s masterpiece, then there was more hope for the future).

The reaction of the audience was the same. By the end, everyone, almost in unison, prayed for salvation – both the heroine and us. But as a result, for two and a half hours, we only endure torment and follow the road of sorrow. Those with stronger nerves just shyly lower their eyes, while the faint-hearted guys are desperately waiting for completion, spinning in a chair. By the end, it doesn’t even matter which one.

But, despite the absolutely rejecting script, the acting is at its best. It can be seen that the 6 years spent filming the film were not in vain. Dakota Faning played her part one hundred percent. It’s hard to imagine what the actress had to let through, but she wanted to believe her suffering and courage. Guy Pearce is by far the worst villain in the world. Complete reincarnation. And in general, the cast is just wonderful.

Summing up, I want to say that tragedy is the norm for dramatic storytelling. Both in books and in movies. No one is interested in looking at absolutely happy people who do not have any problems. But even in this you need to know when to stop. A person needs to be given hope. And here she is not.

Tarantino shot his 9th film, first of all, for himself. He chose his favorite topic – something that always excited him the most – the movie. Why the 60s? Yes, because it was at this time that little Quentin spent all day fascinatingly watching films shot in real scenery, and not on the “greenback” in the same pavilion. Only acting and no computer graphics.

The impressions received in childhood are always sharp, because then the feeling of novelty haunts us constantly. That’s why I love the 90s so much, and Quentin Tarantino the 60s.

And now the adult director took a present to himself – that mischievous boy from the 60s, excitedly watching TV. Quentin filmed a movie tale. More precisely, he created an alternative reality of his favorite time in Hollywood, tying up a plot in a tragic event.

Roman Polanski is not only a brilliant director, but also a person with an unusual and sad fate. In 1969, crazy hippies from the Charles Manson commune broke into his house, killed his pregnant wife (Sharon Tate), three of his friends, and wrote “pig on the wall with blood. The causeless bloody massacre caused a shock among the peace-loving citizens, and Polanski finally lost her mind. The media regularly threw firewood into the fire, releasing accusatory articles, saying that if it were not for the rampant lifestyle of Roman, there might not have been a massacre. Nonsense!

In 1977, Polanski was accused of raping a thirteen-year-old model, which put an end to his American career. Miraculously, the court gave him only 3 months in prison. But when Roman came out, the judge abruptly changed his mind and decided to put Polanski for life. The director flees to France and continues to make films. In the USA, his road is closed forever, but the film “The Pianist still gets an Oscar for best directing in 2002.

Tarantino takes as a basis the tragedy of Polanski’s life, while simultaneously conducting the viewer a detailed excursion into the world of the golden age of Hollywood. This is the heyday of Kubrick’s career, the work of Fellini, the cult westerns of Sergio Leone, “Baby Rosemary Polanski and other legendary events. And in all this luxury, the protagonist of the film, the star of the westerns of the 50s, Rick Dalton, eke out a miserable existence. His career is approaching sunset. Through the prism of the character of the hero, Tarantino shows us the problems of cinema of that time.

Rick has a prototype – a talented actor Bert Reynolds. He made friends with his stuntman Hal Neal, who was the prototype for Cliff Booth (Pitt character).

The role of Sharon Tate is played by Margot Robbie. Quentin showed her as an enthusiastic, but somewhat aloof girl.

Tarantino has a special approach to the masses. They are not driven by the desire to earn money, he just makes a movie, trying to fall in love with him as much as possible by the audience, without going along with them. Quentin makes films that you want to watch. Because his work catches not only with the plot, but also with a unique vision. His films are paintings that turn the TV room into a cinema museum. He is faithful to his stylistic devices, for which we (his fans) love him so much. This Tarantino postmodernism is our catalyst for aesthetic pleasure.

Therefore, when I hear that someone called this masterpiece film “boring, I feel sad for the people. For the inability to appreciate the beautiful and for the lack of understanding of his genius. If you do not understand something, then at least do not pour mud on it. Indeed, if you try to understand all the allusions and metaphors, you can discover a lot of new things.

This is a wonderful and very deep film, which caused an aesthetic orgasm among moviegoers. Thanks, it was awesome. Perhaps I’ll look one more time. And then again. And further.

P.S .: a curious fact: mother named Quentin in honor of the character of the film (Quentin Asper), played by Bert Reynolds – the prototype of Rick Dalton. Coincidence? I don’t think so.

So, I’m sorry, this introductory poem spun in the language. I couldn’t tear myself away from the film, intriguing these triplets. It seemed that the film was watched for the sake of the hero Cruise – that’s who I truly felt sorry for. First, children came to him who, to put it mildly, see the cons in everything. You see, mom has a wonderful sponsor who bought them and did them. Then, it turns out that poor dad was not there when he was needed, etc. On the head of a lonely man problems climb. A son who does not want to understand his father. A daughter who from the very beginning tries to show her psychological abilities and tells Cruz that he is wrong with a boy. Is that you, the boy is found, behind which the father must run from behind.

Okay, all egoists, it won’t be about that. But I was mildly surprised when, during times of danger, the children start yelling at daddy, given that before that he had seen enough of alien creatures. The son appears FIG-knows-from where a sharp attack of heroism. Half of the film, he proves that he is a comic book man with superpower. With a daughter, things are no better. I understand that the poor child is scared – naturally, a miracle with three legs runs after you ten times more than you do – but it’s not a matter of constantly hysteria and screaming. Do not scream, do not cry, namely, screaming in full throat and bring to white heat and so nervous father.

But, these feelings were triggered by the heroes, but not like the cast. What kind of installation they gave – this is what they did. Tom Cruise played a normal person, with real emotions and with a true point of view on life. E-mine, what kind of people are around, if you want to save children, and yourself, your beloved, too? I liked Fanning with Chatwin, Miranda Otto, who was known to me only by the Lord of the Rings, was very pleased. In my opinion, the cast is picked up with a bang and there’s nothing to argue with. They played well, but I already said about their heroes.

Spielberg is a brilliant director, in his film such genres as fiction, action and adventure have gathered. The dramatic line is deeply developed. The script is interesting, the moments associated with the life of the tripodes, their way of removing unnecessary people are especially attractive, I can even say that the characters in people are clearly expressed by their actions, the end was generally surprised. The only thing that was not to their liking – the scene with Robbinson dragged on.

In general, the film is very good, no doubt, I liked it.

Push 4K Review
This little bit of cinematic junk food is moderately entertaining if you’re not looking to exercise any brain cells. It’s about a bunch of people — some good, some bad — with special powers in pursuit of a suitcase that contains something that everybody wants. I could go into what the suitcase actually contains, and why it’s important, and why everyone wants it, but I don’t have the energy, and it doesn’t matter much anyway, because the film is more interested in its style than it is in its plot, which isn’t in this case a criticism.

The film reminded me of a jacked up version of one of those 1940s crime thrillers, where everyone speaks in a hard-boiled patter and what happens isn’t nearly as important as how it all looks happening. So what if this film’s plot seems needlessly complicated, and so what if there are way too many narrative threads that don’t ever get completely developed, and so what if the whole thing is edited to within an inch of its life? It’s still pretty fun if you’re in the mood for it.

Chris Evans and Dakota Fanning are the nominal stars, and Djimon Hounsou makes an appearance, proving yet again that what he really needs more than anything is a better dialect coach.

The crazy color palettes and art direction in this film reminded me as I was watching it of “Lucky Number Slevin,” another bit of entertaining B pulp. How funny then that I look at this film’s director’s (Paul McGuigan) resume only to find that it includes….you guessed it…..”Lucky Number Slevin.” If nothing else, his films certainly have a visual style in common.
