The great classic of Hollywood, Billy Wilder is a separate history of cinema. He had his directorial heyday in the 1940s-50s of the twentieth century. It was in 1944, far away for us, that he wrote the screenplay of Double Indemnity. This brilliant film by Billy Wilder is not only a classic representative of the genre, but also one of the milestone works in creating the inimitable style and atmosphere of the black film.

The film is based on the story by James M. Kane. The story of ‘Double Indemnity’ tells us about an agent named Walter Neff who becomes embroiled in a dangerous and confusing game. Together with a beautiful blonde, Phyllis Dietrichson, they want to get rid of the latter’s husband, and spin the case in such a way as to get double insurance. However, following the unshakable canons of the genre, not everything is as simple as it seems at first glance.

The film was a real revelation, very many of the director’s findings were used for the first time. Even the narrative structure is quite original, and there is not a little space for the director’s open plot maneuvering. Billy Wilder understood that in a story in which the main character confesses to murder in the very first minutes, it is necessary to set plot traps so that the viewer can’t take a breath. The magnificent script hits the mark. We witness the planning and execution of a ‘perfect’ crime, one single mistake in which leads to disastrous consequences. The magnificent acting by Fred McMurray and Barbara Stanwyck allows the audience to feel the absurdity and hopelessness of the situation on the part of McMurray’s character, and the impeccable human acting on Stanwyck’s part. Every time we see the two actors in the frame, there is a frenetic tension between the two characters, forcing the audience to meekly watch this game of ‘cat and mouse’.

By constructing his picture on the principle of the ‘voice-over narration’ of the main character, Wilder has grasped another feature of the genre. He introduces his viewer into the dystopian, full of the strongest depressions in the life of the characters of the picture. This allows you to build an excellent depressing atmosphere, the director works brilliantly with the plot tools, not forgetting, of course, and visually increase the ‘gloom’.

Practically a perfect representative of noir, Billy Wilder’s Double Indemnity features an excellent script, excellent acting and a fantastically recreated atmosphere of despair and oppressive existence. This is a case where the director was able to reach a brilliant compromise between plot twists and visual style, building a perfect ‘black’ construction, where it is the plot details that matter. With this film Wilder has written his name in gold letters in the history of the genre, and left future generations a masterfully made picture, to which every self-respecting director who begins to make a ‘black’ film, simply must pay attention.

A large-scale epic film based on a biblical plot, telling about the life and great deeds of Moses. It makes no sense to retell the plot of this piece from the Holy Scriptures, since almost everyone is familiar with it. Well, if you do not know who Moses is and how he brought the people of Israel out of Egypt, received from God the tablets with the covenants (10 commandments) and his other great deeds, then read the Bible.

The film is epic from title to timing (220 minutes). Looking at the time that the film is running, you involuntarily think: ‘How can you withstand such a long film?’. Surprisingly, the film looks very solid, moreover, for the convenience of the audience, it is divided into 2 parts.

Unusually for the film, in the beginning we will see Cecil B. DeMille himself, who will deliver an opening speech, talking about the magnitude of the author’s intention and the sources that served to create this film.

According to the author’s intention, the film is not just a story about the life of Moses, but also about such concepts as ‘freedom’ and ‘faith’ and raises the questions ‘should a person live according to the Law of God or obey the will and whims of dictators?’ and ‘is a person the property of the state, or is his soul free from the creation of the world?’

The technical side of the film is worked out to the smallest detail – the costumes and scenery are amazing. Despite being filmed in 1954, the visuals are superb. The visual series may seem a bit archaic to the modern viewer, but do not forget that there were no computers at that time, and all visualization was done by means of engineering or photographic effects.

Of course, one cannot fail to mention the main performers of the film. Almost the entire film on the screen we see Charlton Heston, who looks great in the image of Moses. But in the first half of the film, Heston plays at least something, then his role is reduced to looking spectacular on the screen and so that the viewer really believes that this is a ‘prophet of God’, and for this, ‘theatrical techniques’ and’ epic poses’.

Not lost against the background of Heston and Yul Briner. Despite the fact that his role is negative, Briner attracts the viewer with his charisma and looks much more ‘alive’ than Heston.

At one time, the film was deservedly awarded an Oscar for visual effects and was nominated for statuettes in 6 nominations (film; operator’s work (color films); artist’s work (color films); costume designer’s work (color films); sound; editing) …

The film was also recognized by the American Film Institute, namely, it was ranked 79th on the list of 100 most inspiring films and 43rd on the list of 50 best heroes in cinema (Moses).
