In the cinema of the eighth decade of the twentieth century, generally quite rich in excellent examples of the ‘lycanthropic’ subgenre, perhaps only three films can be called really key to the horror genre as a whole – Joe Dante’s Howl, John Landis’ American Werewolf in London, and The Silver Bullet ‘Daniel Ettias. Moreover, if you can argue about the third film and name a few quite decent thematic films, then the first two will not dare to throw out of the history of ‘films about werewolves’, I am sure, no self-respecting film fan.

Smile of Fate – All three horror classics have been directed by outstanding comedians. All of them had a great influence not only on the genre, but also on cinema as a whole, becoming a kind of reference points, small revolutions that changed the attitude of the viewer to such films and made filmmakers and critics think, who had not previously taken such cinema seriously. If you choose the most iconic film from this glorious trio, it will most likely be American Werewolf in London. Almost always they speak of him as a masterpiece and a cultural phenomenon, moreover, although he came out a few months later than the no less cult classic Joe Dante, he has a much higher critique rating, a much higher viewer rating, greater commercial success, and Finally, as a trump card, it also has the cherished gilded idiot, which is generally nonsense for the horror genre, moreover, this nomination was largely opened precisely for this film – the skill of make-up artists amazed the academicians too much. (Of course, Dante can say with resentment that it was after the success of his ‘Howl’ that the audience rushed to the theaters for another film about werewolves).

It took Ilya Muromets 33 years to accumulate heroic strength, Landis managed in just 12 years. For 12 years, the desire to film The Werewolf was overgrown with ideas, script additions, for 12 years it was waiting for the director’s rich imagination to be supported by the necessary level of special effects and, of course, funding. In 1981, Landis could already afford to shoot ‘it is not clear what’, in the wake of the popularity of even more iconic and even more unusual ‘Blues Brothers’, ‘American Werewolf’ no longer seemed to the producers a dubious and low-profit project.

With all this, the colossus brought into the world turned out to be simple to a perplexed shrug of the shoulders – where did this formula of success come from, which only the same Dante could really repeat in the Gremlins? What did Landis have at the time? Several classic werewolf movies, like ‘Wolf Man’ and ‘Frankenstein vs. Wolf Man’, but they had one problem – by the 80s they were outdated, not technically, but ideologically. Few people could seriously be afraid of werewolves, those old films were catastrophically serious, and therefore caused only laughter in the viewer. This often happens: any horror movie, when the emphasis is shifted, easily turns into a comedy (sometimes against the will of its creators), thereby neutralizing itself as a genre film. Unfortunately, now this is found at every step more and more often – directors who do not know how to deal properly with comedy or horror make a rather pitiful movie, while Landis guessed the right path almost 30 years ago.

It seems that he invented a new genre altogether – an ironic horror film. The misadventures of the characters in the film have a distinctly ironic connotation. Precisely the shade, because it is in no way a parody or even a black comedy. This is precisely a horror film where really terrible things happen, but the author himself takes it lightly, forcing the viewer to treat it just as easily. They do not try to frighten the viewer with the sickening horrors of torn flesh (the cheapest technique often used by modern filmmakers), on the contrary, fear is born from a non-fictional attitude to events: the easier and simpler the introduction to a frightening moment, the more unexpected and terrible the moment itself will be. Just now we saw a very unpleasantly torn dead man who came to life, how the dead man begins to talk with his friend quite in the style of their live conversations and his appearance no longer becomes an object of fear. And vice versa – we just watched how the hero toils from idleness and amusingly worried, when suddenly he jumps up and begins to turn into a werewolf with all the details! The viewer was preparing for this scene, but still arrives in complete confusion.

And with all this, Landis’s film does not set itself the task of scaring you to a swoon. The werewolf in the film is like a random face. He simply breaks the cheerful harmony of what is happening, you do not feel any hatred and anger towards him. And to say that in the final, good won out over evil. The almost symbolic last scene seems to say: ‘Sorry, but it happened. Such is the arrow of chance! Such is the price of a pleasant meeting in a foreign country.

Irony shows through in the image of the British countryside, the director kind of casually remarks: ‘Hmmm, only in such a country with such nice people and such excellent weather could werewolves appear.’ Landis does not miss the opportunity to sting 3 typical cliches-behavior of the alleged victims: cheerful light-hearted buffoonery with a tragic ending, a long and pointless attempt to escape and collective madness.

Of course, this film is not an actor’s, with all due respect to the charming David Naftan, who heroically tried to hide the shameful places in all possible ways and almost achieved success in this, and to the pretty Jenny Agutter. Their acting functions were minimal. The director’s decisions and, of course, the work of the make-up artist aroused surprise and admiration. If anyone has revolutionized makeup in cinema, it is without a doubt Rick Baker. And the scene of the transformation of the hero into a werewolf has become one of the textbook elements of the technical development of American cinema.

Of course, the excitement, which for many years did not subside around this film, pushed the directors to numerous imitations and borrowings. In the films of Craven and Marshall, Fawceth and Nichols, Hickox and Sullivan, who also understand a lot about horror films, the roots of Landis’ famous film are clearly visible. But Landis’s unique formula still did not find a worthy spokesman. John himself soon finally went into comedy, less and less resorting to genre deviations, and films such as ‘American Werewolf in Paris’, diligently copying Landis’s directorial decisions, look only convulsive twitchings of the copiers who did not understand a damn thing about them.

Of course, anyone has the right to challenge the ‘masterpiece’ label firmly stuck to this tape, to give any low mark – the meaning of this truly cult film will not suffer from this in the least. He said his big word in creating a ‘new movie about werewolves’, and they won’t be able to outshout him soon, if they can at all.

By the way, soon a remake of ‘The Wolf Man’ will appear on the screens, which – yes, yes! – Shoots another comedian, Joe Johnston. Here you will involuntarily start thinking – you see, only a person with a great sense of humor can sincerely be afraid and not take his own fear seriously!

Without extra water, “Get the Knives” is a very cool movie, surprising far more than you might expect. In the plot, acting and semantic context, it works as powerful as it seems to be possible at all: a star on a star, a twist on a twist, a reference on a reference – you simply dig in all this luxury. The ingenious Ryan Johnson, who invented, wrote and put on this whole fascinating attraction, incredibly delicately balances between playing a good game in the detective genre and laughing at the clich?s and stereotypes that are typical for him.

And to do this, namely, to revolutionize the established in the genre, is not a novelty for the director. The notorious “Last Jedi filmed by him act in the same way: a new reading breaks the canon almost 180 degrees. And if in this case Johnson decided to play with fire, encroaching on the sacred, then in the situation with the classic British detective the risks were much less: the genre is going through hard times and a fresh look came in handy.

Taking off his hat to Agatha Christie, Edgar Allan Poe and, probably, other respected writers, the director completely immerses the captivating atmosphere of a certain antiquity and aristocracy. The house, attire, and other surroundings seemed to be just waiting to be shoved into some good detective story. And then everything goes according to the patterns: there is a murder pretending to be suicide, a galaxy of relatives, each of which, as is usually the case, is suspected, and has a tooth on the deceased, and along with them a whole cabbage of names that you freely associate with one or another Hollywood face after painfully familiar prologue in the form of a dialogue between a policeman and another “saddened brother, matchmaker, etc. The unfolding performance looks extremely amusing due to the non-linear narrative, slipping unobtrusive comedy and, to tell the truth, talented artists such as Christopher Plummer, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Tony Collett and Don Johnson.

When the toggle switch of the genre turns on to full, the degree of interest only increases. Chamberness is replaced by wide streets, rational conversations for the “best pursuit in the history of cinema, and dramatic episodes with jellied laughter. A new look touched not only the plot component, but also some actors who play the actual antipodes of their famous images here: the right Captain Chris Evans gives way to a sharp-tongued major, the always stunning Ana de Armas turned into an inconspicuous immigrant (reincarnated, by the way, brilliantly), and the permanent stone physiognomy of Daniel Craig put on a mask to the extent of a comic detective, completely decoupling the enticing viewer. If you are curious to learn about the ideas you have, then you will not be disappointed: the author speaks about migration issues without too much edification, about laziness to create something original, his own, about the complexity of family relationships, about the duplicity and artificiality of people (specifically capitalists) who are ready bite off your hand during an attempt on their denyuzhku and at the same time smiling in the absence thereof, etc., etc.

“Get the Knives” is a real gift at sunset of the year: a smart, relevant, funny and insanely exciting piece with a decent number of unexpected turns, the increasing frequency in the final of which makes this part of the film truly unforgettable and impressive. Bravo, Ryan Johnson, we look forward to your next tasty experiment, which is the best proof that innovation in cinema is alive!

Attention, people! If you suddenly hear that this cartoon will be on TV, rush to the screens faster. And those who watched, and those who were very lucky and everything was ahead. Because it’s gorgeous, just wonderful cartoon from Pixar studio. The studio, which, along with Dreamworks, makes the kindest and most wonderful cartoons in the world, and the Corporation is undoubtedly one of the best cartoons.

The first is the idea. What geniuses to be. to come up with a world of monsters and a company engaged in pumping out cries from children?! A whole huge corporation dealing with this, incidentally, is a very interesting process. The plot is as follows: Sally and Mike are trying to save the girl from some not very good personalities, but it turns out that they are so funny that watching is not just interesting, but interesting! Jokes accompany the cartoon throughout its duration. Kind, good and funny – like himself. The main joker is, of course, Mike Wazowski, who laughs just fine.

What can I say about the characters … Bravo! There are so many monsters in the city, but each one is individual and with its own character. The good-natured Sally and cheerful Mike are a gorgeous couple, perfectly acting as the main characters, the secondary characters are also very pleased, thanks to them the cartoon is even better. And now the main character is a girl who accidentally fell into the world of monsters Boo. Boo is a masterpiece. This small, mischievous girl with two ponytails cannot but please the eye, and when she starts to cry, she wants to cry herself.

And the ending … Another ingenious thing in the cartoon, thanks to which I once again affirm in my assessment:

Here it is – the darkest and most cruel film of the entire saga. Having released the classic trilogy of episodes IV-V-VI at the beginning, the creator of the franchise, George Lucas, has released three prequel films over the years, so that the whole picture of the Star Wars universe is clear. Now, after the release of the “final third episode, all parts of the mosaic have merged together, giving us in total the most famous fantastic saga in the history of cinema, which has no analogues so far.

Perhaps, quite a while ago, a fantastic blockbuster did not shake me so emotionally. If in the previous parts the atmosphere of expectation of some terrible event prevailed, then the entire third episode is this very terrible event, with all the consequences that follow from this. Without a doubt, this part can be called the darkest and literally desperate in the whole saga. Even the gloomy and philosophical fifth episode (which, in my opinion, and not only mine, is the best in the saga) “The Empire Strikes Back remains a bit in the shade (precisely in terms of the oppressive atmosphere).

This is a somewhat controversial proposition, because in this case the emotions of the audience are manipulated by general injustice and, in fact, all emotions are caused by a simple way of demonstrating cruelty, so for me personally, the above fifth seems a little more honest. But I do not detract from the merits of the third episode. He is without a doubt the best in the new trilogy.

What I liked most about this tape was its focus and director’s viewing angle. Due to the fact that we already know the denouement, the director could simply choose the position of the observer and simply logically bring everything that happens to the initial actions of the fourth episode. But Lucas took a different path: he made the audience literally empathize with what was happening, and I’m sure that for the majority somewhere in the depths of my soul there was a tiny spark of hope that something would change and the feeling of general hopelessness would disappear.

To create a sense of ownership, our good uncle Lucas demonstrates all the events from the point of view of Anakin Skywalker, at some points deliberately making the Jedi more formidable and … selfish or something. Again the very double bottom appears in the plot, which I appreciate most in this saga. Everything has a double meaning. Yes, Anakin fell on the Dark Side of power, but it all started with love, which he desperately did not want to lose. Here is evil for you …

It is especially touching that all of this could have been avoided if the Jedi were less reckless. Throughout Anakin’s career, the Council rotted him for disobeying the code of the order, however, in the climax of Mace Windu and Darth Sidious, a member of the Jedi Council himself wanted to cross the line and kill unarmed despite the same Code. Perhaps this was the impetus of Skywalker to betrayal. Well, once you get to the Dark Side, as Yoda said, you will forever bind your fate with it.

We can talk about the philosophy of the series for a long time, so it’s time to move on to something else. For example, memorable episodes. The visual perfection of the third episode is simply magnificent and, as always, is out of time: our future kids will surely watch this tape without any twinges of conscience. After watching, literally squeezing all the emotions out of you, you are unlikely to want to review the film (except after some time), but individual episodes constantly pop up in your memory: the opening battle with droids to save the Chancellor, the murder of Windu, the fight with Grievous and of course, the final battle lightsabers between two best friends. This is perhaps the most epic and most difficult, from a moral point of view, episode of the saga.

In my opinion, there were no problems with the dynamics either. The dialogs are lively and interesting, and the battle scenes are adrenaline and completely boring. No less enthusiasm is caused by music. The London Symphony Orchestra did something incredible – from the music literally goosebumps run through, so after watching I immediately found a soundtrack in order to resume those very impressions.

Errors in the acting aspect have also been eliminated. Hayden Christensen, who was the weakest link in the ensemble of the previous episode, apparently prepared thoroughly for this tape – he pulled out all his dramatically episodes perfectly, and his look in the second half of the film was something indescribable. Here he is – Darth Vader without a mask. Finally, the second-order actors, who this time played their characters brighter than usual, showed themselves: Samuel L. Jackson and Ian McDiarmid were simply magnificent and colorful as never before. Natalie Portman is still beautiful and in the finale it was even sad that the new trilogy is ending. Evan McGregor has already demonstrated in his character the features of the old Obi-Wan from the classic trilogy, which is already worth a lot.

Star Wars: Episode 3 – Revenge of the Sith – a true masterpiece not only in the genre of science fiction, but for the whole cinema as a whole. In terms of emotional level, it can be compared with the best episodes of the saga – V and VI. So, to all lovers of emotional, spectacular and simply high-quality cinema – my sincere recommendations.

Star Wars: Episode 6 – The Return of the Jedi is probably one of those rare moments when the viewer doesn’t want to end. No, of course, everyone is immensely happy that the side of the World will win a much-desired victory over the Dark Force, but I didn’t want to end the “old trilogy, it was too disappointing to say goodbye to our beloved heroes. But such a decision was made by George Lucas, the main inspirer of the cult science fiction saga, who also replaced the director in the third film (Richard Marquand came to replace Irwin Kerschner).

George Lucas, apparently, long before filming decided to shoot every part every three years, and “Episode 6” was released six years after the starting tape of the space epic. And it must be stated that even by such a somewhat long standards, Star Wars did not lose its amazing power in all its components. There are plenty of spectacles, visual loads. George Lucas (already as a screenwriter) and Lawrence Kazdan again added a “sharp” in the visual plan: what are the chases in the high forests on flying motorcycles. They didn’t forget to add some new race – in this case they were able to anticipate themselves when funny, funny, small, but heroic ewoks won such love from the audience that they then shot an entire series about them. And they didn’t forget about the climax – it was just amazing, it was on two fronts, and both of them were extremely entertaining and attracted insatiable interest.

The heroes, or rather, the actors who performed the main roles (Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford), as they say, “sang.” This trio created inside the computer special effects also rich personal relationships that cannot be called romantic with full justification, but the romance of the struggle for the idea is for sure. It is a pity that in the future the careers of the first two did not go, but Harrison Ford was already a “star at that time, but he did not pull the blanket over himself, yielding to the conditions that in the 80s of the last century, first of all , it was the quality of the movie, and not the amount of finances invested in various promotions even before the film was released in order to immediately recapture their hard-earned money, and it was desirable to repel them right away. So at that moment lies the success of Star Wars – it’s not a purebred blockbuster of the “era of full popcorn, it’s also the realization that George Lucas thoughtfully and imaginatively served us such a tidbit that there are so many ingredients that you can easily go astray from the account, but not one interferes with the other, but only complements, creating something unimaginably tasty.

Each episode of Star Wars has its own genre and stylistic difference, which makes the world famous saga so versatile. If in the first episode this is the predominance of action, then the trump card of the second part is romance, which fills the picture to the brim, permeating the episode with the love and magic of unearthly feelings that George Lucas was so eager to show us.

Some call this film one of the worst episodes of the Star Wars saga, but Lucas knew he was shooting. Now, one of the main lines around which all events revolve and will revolve is love, it was the director who devoted the most beautiful shots of the film to her.

Those 10 years that have passed since the events described in the first part have globally changed not only the democracy and politics of the Republic, but also from a smart little boy they have made a handsome and stubborn young man who does not know failures and mistakes. The image that Hayden Christean got really complicated and difficult, but the actor coped with his role perfectly. It is not so easy to convey to a handsome young man who does noble deeds, but with an evil gleam in his eyes and lips quivering with anger.

Anakin is young and ardent, educated according to the Jedi charter, he is noble and kind, but the other side, hidden from view, which only Padme will know for several years, burns, eager to break out. Anger, evil, bitterness, this is the part of Skywalker who can use it at any moment.

After all, everyone perfectly feels it with his heart, everyone loves moral and spiritual values, perfectly highlighted in the whole trilogy, and in particular in this film.
