Against the background of Hollywood giants like Pixar and DreamWorks, the modest animation studio Laika does not look like the most impressive fighter, and yet, thanks to its professionals, viewers were able to see a number of truly extraordinary works that deserved a long standing ovation. Organized in 2005, experimental Laika made a world-wide splash with Tim Burton’s astonishing Corpse Bride, a grotesque theater of macabre madness. Without changing the successfully tested technology step puppet animation, the creators of the studio began to develop no less ambitious projects, taking a hand in the eccentric and somewhat disturbing ‘Paranorman’, as well as the surreal ‘Coraline’, still causing shivers just thinking about the eye sockets with buttons for eyes. Every cartoon studio always has an extraordinary enveloping atmosphere of a strange tale, from which it is not so easy to take your eyes off. The fearlessness of Laika’s writers, directors and animators sometimes affects the box office of the studio’s creations, and nevertheless the masters of the puppet extravaganza are not going to stop there. In 2016, a decade and one year after the release of ‘Corpse of the Bride’, a fifth full-length animated film from Laika snuck into theaters, continuing the wave of endless creative experiments and trials. We’re talking about ‘Kubo. Legend of the Samurai’, a story steeped in concentrated Japanese flavor, skillfully combining features of independent cinema and entertainment available to all viewers without any exceptions.

As for the plot of the cartoon, it takes us to the old days, when legends still had a tendency to come to life. The main character of the adventure is a little boy named Kubo (original voice of Art Parkinson). Living in a small village with his mother, he is known among the villagers skillful storyteller breathtaking legends. As the heir to a great warrior of the past, Kubo prepares himself for the greatest achievements, but in order to do so he must grow up and put on the impenetrable armor of a valiant defender of the poor and needy. But fate itself throws a sharp challenge to Kubo, and he simply has no time to wait for adulthood, because his actions directly depend on the well-being of his family and friends. A dangerous enemy coming from beyond threatens to turn peaceful Japanese lands to ashes, and only a possessor of Kubo’s father’s armor can give him a worthy response. The only person capable of coping with the clan’s power is, of course, our Kubo. He is the only person capable of fighting with the clan’s power, and it doesn’t matter that he has never held anything but a musical instrument in his hands. With the help of unexpected comrades ready to die for the boy, Kubo embarks on a long and dangerous adventure through mountains, rivers and plains to justify the proud title of the son of a majestic hero and, as a consequence, to become a hero himself, which will be composed of legends.

One of the main ideologists behind the creation of ‘Kubo. Legends of the Samurai” was the studio’s producer Travis Knight, previously involved in the development of ‘Paranorman’. What’s remarkable about Laika’s work is that it’s a relatively small close-knit team with no clearly defined responsibilities. The director of a cartoon is not averse to substitute hard-working animator, and he, in turn, does not miss the opportunity to give the director a couple of sensible tips. Do not stand aloof from the direct creative process and producers, among the camp which just is Travis Knight. With the office located in close proximity to the studio premises, Knight did not miss the opportunity to penetrate into the very essence of the proprietary turn-based animation and still felt the strength to take on the project with a pronounced Japanese style. Under the direction of the debutant director of ‘Kubo. Legend of the Samurai’ somewhat lost its pervasive mystique, inherent in the soul of ‘Corpse of the Bride’ and ‘Paranorman’, but at the same time, the cartoon has become much more colorful, rapid and technically advanced past works of the studio. It is noticeable that the creators have paid a lot of attention to the recreation of more moving and fluidly moving dolls. Budget ‘Kubo’ still varies in a fairly modest for Hollywood, but it did not stop the animators to open a wonderful new world, full of color, dizzying action and colorful characters with memorable visual details.

Moving from the chair of the producer to the director, Travis Knight proved that the sense of beauty is not alien even to professional cabinet officers. Somewhat different is the case with the semantic component of the cartoon. Although tangible failures in it still can not be observed, and this fact can not but rejoice. ‘Kubo. Legend of the Samurai” borrows not very well known to the mass Western audience legends, tales and beliefs originating from ancient Japan. Viewers are generally accustomed to watching the valiant adventures of valiant warriors of honor with a katana at full stretch without the slightest intervention otherworldly forces, and when the story creeps into the original Japanese mystique, the picture can be expected to very cool reception in view of the aversion of alien mythology audiences. The recent failure of ’47 Ronin’ with Keanu Reeves at the helm showed that some stories have not yet come to their time, so it is better to keep them in the closet for the right occasion. But unlike a massive game blockbuster, Travis Knight’s ‘Kubo’ smoothes out the sharp edges with a cheerful spirit of enthusiastic animation. Traditionally, cartoons can contain any outlandish elements and present them in an incredibly appealing way, capturing the attention of viewers with a wide variety of tastes. In ‘Kubo’ the authors have tried to moderate the degree of eccentricity, combining in the story both Japanese coloring and Western humor and manner of narration. The desire to please everyone leads to a partial loss of Laika’s unique creative vision, but in terms of conquering new heights ‘Kubo’ has taken a serious step forward.

The original voicing of the cartoon also deserves special attention. With all due respect to the masters of dubbing, but the director has invited the studio recordings of prominent stars of our time in the face of Rafe Fiennes, Charlize Theron, Matthew McConaughey and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (how could it be without him in the movies about Japan?!). In some cartoons notable names of celebrities involved in the voicing, are only for promotional purposes. In ‘Kubo’ stars have to try hard to bring their characters to life and give their characters a sparkle. Judging by the intonation and emotion that Fiennes and his comrades uttered in front of the microphone, they thoroughly enjoyed working with Travis Knight and endeavoured to the very end to delight the audience with excellent adventures which riveted their attention from every angle they turned their gaze to.

In the end, I would like to say that ‘Kubo. Legend of the Samurai’ is a true pleasure to watch. Maybe the cartoon lacks a specific manner of presenting the plot in the style of the studio’s previous works, but what it cannot take away, it is colorful, spectacular and true experiences of the soul. Under the debutant Travis Knight was born extraordinary animated film, stands out great against the background of stamped rivals from the computer animation, and this means that the release of ‘Kubo’ beyond the attention is not recommended. It’s not often that animated adventures hit theaters that aren’t going to slip out of your memory so quickly. Enjoy your viewing pleasure!

The crisis that broke out on the neutral-zone sand planet of Nimbus III seemed to be just another act of local rebellion wanting only to attract the attention of the Federation – but not this time.

Now the rebels have a leader, a native of the planet Vulcan named Sybok, who even by Vulcan standards has outstanding parapsychological abilities – all he needs is a brief chat for a human or other alien to feel an undivided trust in him.

Saibok declares himself the new messiah and plans to go in search of – who do you think? – God! And at just the right time the Enterprise and its crew will be forced to carry out this mission, because even Spock, one of the few who have not succumbed to compulsion, can not raise a hand against his… sibling.

Their way is to the center of the galaxy, beyond the Great Barrier, to the mysterious planet of Sha Ka Ree, where, according to ancient books, the Great Creator himself awaits them in all his glory. But will they find what they believe, what they wish to find, or will the myth forever remain a myth? All the answers are in Sha Ka Ri.

The most amazing voyage of the Enterprise begins…

4k movies reviews
I liked the beginning. A stylish, beautiful prologue, a touching outdoor recreation scene of a trio of friends, then a challenge – terrorists have captured three important dignitaries from all three important states in the galaxy…

And then, oh gods, what a load of nonsense.

The basis of the plot is an extremely primitive fusion of the original Apollo series and the Lucifer cartoon series, with the addition of a cartoon series about some Mayan or Aztec god, I do not remember. Hello, guys, we’ve already flown to the center of the galaxy! We’ve already had conversations with the gods and the devil! How could Shatner forget that, since he was involved in the making of both series, albeit as an actor?

The behavior of the crew of the ‘Enterprise. That’s out of the question. Don’t they have shrinks there in the bright future? Are the crews not trained to counteract the brainwashing? A crazy preacher says: ‘I see your pain, open it to me’ – and Chekov, Sulu, Uhura, all the ship’s nameless workers are like docile sheep, butting in on their oaths, their personal loyalty to Kirk, their own dignity? By and large, only Kirk (does his halo not sting, director?) behaves impeccably. I don’t believe it.

The apotheosis of this: Spock almost betrays Kirk (Nimoy writes in his autobiography that he almost beat that ‘almost’ out of Shatner with his fists; in the original script, Spock actually betrays Kirk). How?! Spock is Kirk? More like hell freezes over, as the Americans say. It’s more likely Spock would shoot himself. And there it was possible to resolve the issue without killing the antagonist (the fact that Spock didn’t dare to kill – okay, Vulcan values of non-violence and family ties, personal attachment, well, stretch that). But to give up like that? And Kirk then so easily forgives this under-surrender. Yes, it would be like a knife in his throat with his character and even more so in the light of what he recently did for Spock and what he sacrificed.

As for McCoy and Spock’s psychoanalysis, um… well, okay, McCoy does have a psychological problem, but many people live with the same or a similar one (some, for example, have to surrender their elderly parents to the hospital… some, yes, at any rate, consider euthanasia). And for Spock to twist ‘I’m an underdog, my dad doesn’t love me,’ after his dad has quite recently made it quite clear to him that he does and is proud of it, is just silly.

From the last third of the movie, an extremely boring chunk begins that I could barely resist skipping through. Ten minutes could easily have been cut there. Nothing happens there! They’re walking slowly toward their goal… What is this, Tarkovsky’s ‘Stalker’?

The climax. Oy-wey. This is what we shot over an hour and a half of film for?

Here’s the final act of the antagonist – that’s cool. Here he suddenly showed himself to be a man (or rather, a Vulcan) of honor and great personal courage. Which doesn’t really tie in with his behavior in the beginning, by the way.

What else is good… The Klingons aren’t bad, and the main one, who’s been chasing Kirk (everyone gives a shit about Kirk, in the third film someone wants to personally whack him) – he’d be a gorgeous-looking man, if it weren’t for the Klingon forehead. And it’s about time the Klingons had a little peace of mind…

There are some funny moments. True, the one with the naked Uhura is kind of, uh… weird. Disrespectful to Uhura.

Anyway, I understand that Nimoy couldn’t help but cede the director’s chair to his best friend. In his autobiography, he brushed Shatner off as best he could, repeating that Shatner was not to blame for the film’s failure, but it’s still clear – and Shatner included.

After the explosion of Praxis, one of the moons of Kronos, which destroyed almost all of the Klingons’ livelihoods, the conflict between the Federation and the Klingon Empire ended. It’s time for peace talks, but as it turns out, not everyone wants peace – some are satisfied with unceasing war.

Kirk and his loyal crew, already “five minutes retired,” are given the secret assignment to conduct the first, preparatory round of peace talks with the Chancellor of the Klingon Empire. But the unexpected happens–the Klingon ship is attacked, the Chancellor is killed, the negotiations are disrupted, and the Enterprise, specifically Captain Kirk and Dr. McCoy, are blamed for the atrocity.

While the top Federation officials ponder what to do, the Klingon court sentences them to imprisonment on a detached, ice-covered asteroid. But they don’t give up hope–because they are Starfleet officers, and because Kirk has a mission–he has long guessed that this is a plot to derail the peace talks, and gradually he begins to uncover it.

Meanwhile, the Enterprise, commanded by Spock, secretly flies to their rescue…

“Star Trek is already a legend and a masterpiece of science fiction. For a long time yet there will not be such a series that will overtake “Star Trek” in popularity and scale. All of America and half the world knows about the amazing and incredible adventures of the brave admiral, then captain, James T. Kirk and his crew. How many years we’ve been with them, pining, hating and loving, and all the while wondering what is out there where no man has set foot? Beginning in 1966, Star Trek became not just a cult series, but a real live reality, living a life of its own. Series after series, movie after movie, for 25 years we have watched our favorite characters – James Tiberius Kirk, Spock, Leonard “Bones” McCoy, Montgomery “Scotty” Scott, Uhura, Hikaru Sulu and Pavel Chekhov – and tried not to miss the chance to see their faces again. But everything comes to an end. And it came on December 6, 1991. No, Star Trek has not ceased to exist (it will exist even after I die), it’s just that we are saying goodbye to our TOS heroes. There will be no more Kirk, Spock, McCoy and others. It’s time for the younger generation, Enterprise is moving into new hands (the Next Generation series).

The latest film follows all the canons of “Star Trek.”

“Star Trek: Undiscovered Country” is the sixth film and the last for the TOS cast. But along with the cast, we say goodbye forever to the mastermind and creator of this great epic, Gene Roddenberry. He died unexpectedly 48 hours after the close screening on October 24, 1991. In his memory, this film is dedicated to him.

Captain Kirk and his crew retire, but before they do, they are given the simple task of conducting the first preparatory round of peace talks with the Chancellor of the Klingon Empire. A seemingly simple task, but a terrible thing happens – the Chancellor and the Klingon entourage are killed, and Kirk and McCoy are to blame. They are sent to a prison located in an asteroid. Kirk and McCoy realize that this is all a well-planned conspiracy play. The detective story begins…

The plot is very good, but the original story has reached us in a truncated form – affected by the reduction in funding. The prologue, a few scenes and dialogues not directly related to the plot were removed, and the number of set pieces was reduced. But this will not affect the movie viewing – everything is thought out to the smallest detail, there are no superfluous elements and details, everything is well planned. In addition, the film is embellished by good action dynamics – Kirk’s entanglements with the prisoners, the firing of the Klingon entourage, the scuffle in the Palace of Soviets. New special effects technology does a great job of embellishing the film, especially the antigravity and battles in space. And the camerawork is amazing – there are no aberrations, no flaws. The battle in space is shown perfectly – there are no words. There has never been a Star Trek like this before. Also well integrated new races – there is a huge number of them, pleasing to the eye. And of course our favorite Klingon language is honey for the ears.

The film grossed $97,000,000 worldwide on a budget of $30,000,000. This is a very good result, considering that this film was not planned to be made, but wanted to create a prequel to TOS. The creators wanted to tell the audience about the years of study of Captain Kirk. The script was ready and preparation of the scenery began. But suddenly Paramount Pictures makes a decision to stop working on the prequel and start shooting the sequel, because the majority of fans of the epic waited just for the continuation. The film itself was nominated for two Academy Awards – Best Effects and Best Makeup – and for a 1992 Hugo Award in the Best Dramatic Action category. The film was really beautiful and dramatic, it’s impossible to contain emotions at the last words of the wonderful crew:

Uhura: “We are being asked to return to the airlock immediately. We are being retired.”

Spock: “If I were human, I would say: “Go to hell.” If I WERE human.”

Chekov: “Course, Captain?”

Kirk: “To the second star on the right and forward till morning!”

Returning home from Vulcan in an expropriated Klingon spaceship, Kirk and his team prepare for the worst in advance. Although the duty of honor has been fulfilled, and Spock is alive and well with us again, the team has no more reason to rejoice, especially when they begin to remember the wrongdoings along the way.

Disobedience to the order, the hijacked and then self-destructed “Enterprise”, sabotaged “Excelsior” – all this makes them make far from rosy assumptions about what the Earth will meet them with.

But the reality turns out to be much darker – a huge spaceship of unknown design approached the Earth, broadcasting requests to the planet in the language of whales, which were completely extinct by the 23rd century. A strange ship has the ability to affect the weather, which arranges continuous showers, thunderstorms, hurricanes and tornadoes on Earth. Analysis of the situation suggests that if, thanks to some miracle, whales appear on Earth again, this will stabilize the situation and resolve the impending conflict.

And who do you think is capable of performing a miracle? Naturally Captain Kirk and his crew! They are ready to travel to the past in order to find whales and deliver them to the future in order to save the entire planet.

Their journey begins …

`Fascinating!` – Spock would say about Leonard Nimoy’s creation (his own creation). And the same word breaks out of my mouth when I remember this delightful creation. As a fan of the original episodes, I was filled with wild delight throughout the entire viewing. What a worthy continuation of the traditions of the original series … It feels like Gene Rodenberry himself had a hand in the film.

The plot, as always in Star Trek, sparkles with originality! Although we have seen at least once in the season of the Original Series a trip to Earth’s past, each time it looks completely new. This time, carrying out a mission to save humanity, our heroes find themselves in an era unknown to them before. This is where the fun begins. Fun on a galactic scale: chatting with punks and whales, stealing photons from nuclear reactors, pogroms in the hospital and at the polymer plant! Take, for example, these super-funny phrases that simply had to become winged: `Double dumm-ass on you`, – said, as always by resourceful Kirk,` Excuse me, we`re looking for nuclear vessels in Alamida! Nuclear vesssels! `,` -They like you very much, but they not the hell your whales. -I suppose they told you that? -The hell they did! `And many others that it makes no sense to list.

So our beloved team, without a single superfluous character (like Savek in the previous parts), again unrestrainedly overcomes all difficulties and obstacles, boldly moving towards the salvation of the Earth. After all, there is no situation from which they would not come out! The quick-witted Spock still tries to be perfectly logical, being half human, and is still puzzled by human behavior! Not too witty Chekhov amuses us with his accent. Scotty is arrogant as a professor. McCoy makes fun of Spock and marvels at the “backwardness” of 20th century medicine, because “how can you make holes in a patient’s head?” And Uhura, as always, is looking for ‘gibberish’ in subspace. And of course, a decisive, strong and courageous, now an admiral, demoted in the end to captain, Kirk, without whom there would not have been such a masterpiece.

Why such a title? Isn’t that the main idea of the film? Life and prosperity for everyone: people, Vulcans and whales, creatures who were able to destroy the human race. And how stupid the people were to exterminate them!

And of course, true friendship! She is capable of great things. And these guys are real friends to each other and therefore they have nothing to fear. Finally, Spock betrayed his convictions and refused the interests of many in the name of the interests of one, because this one is his friend.

The father, Sarek, is finally proud of his son and his decision to join the starfleet.

Here is such a great movie that left a big smile on my face for several hours.

The defeat of Khan and the creation of the planet Genesis were another triumph for Captain James T. Kirk; but these victories no longer matter to him. Kirk lost one of his best friends, Spock, who died saving the Enterprise, a loss that is irreparable.

The first Star Trek feature film was just a present for the fans: look, guys, the characters never get old! For ten years now, the series has not been released, and the adventures are just beginning. The second became a butt on the head: the heroes do not age, but they tend to die. The third … the third, to be honest, makes me, as a spectator, loudly express my delight, and me as a fan is stupid to blink, because it’s amazing and indescribable how everything has changed.

If we speak in a loud and tortured language, then for me the third film reflected not even the changes, but fractures – the fractures of everything in the world. The time itself, the environment in which the film was created, has changed and has changed. Spaceships have already plowed the vastness of the screens with might and main, ‘Return of the Jedi’ has already been released, inflicting a final and not even a retaliatory blow to all ideas about the old fiction, and new heroes who were striving for freedom, knowledge and justice came to replace the old ones. They were drawn to about the same, but they could afford simple and not very highly moral methods – with a brick on the head (and it is good if on the head). It was then that Leonard Nimoy began to direct the next part of the adventures of the immortal ship ‘Enterprise’.

And he hit the mark (as, indeed, always, he is still Spock!). The main motto of ‘quest’ is action, action and again action. Fast, fast, fast, run, run, gallop, gallop, even further – there! See ?! You won’t have time to catch your breath for the whole film, everything is swift and twisted, just like in the best examples of TOS. Needless to say, how the film wins in terms of plot in comparison with the first and second, which you watch rather with reverence and awe?

For me, Star Trek in any of its manifestations is already a return to something old and good, well known. Scotty still speaks with a Scottish accent, while Chekhov speaks a little Russian. Everything is in its place, except for one, irreplaceable, element, the search for which the film is dedicated to.

And in the process of these very searches, one wonders: oh, is it them? The heroes in the film are put in a situation of choice between an official and a personal duty. And, of course, like any real hero, they will prefer to fulfill their personal, being ready to accept the punishment for neglecting personal duty. Escape from the Starfleet ship, rendering its mechanisms unusable, kidnapping ‘your’ prisoner from prison, brazen jailers, ‘Don’t call me shorty’ from Sulu … First you unwillingly rub your eyes, and then you think about the fact that these people are also make some claims to JJ Abrams …

Separately, I can’t help but thank Nimoy for how he dealt with the rather goofy storyline associated with David. It was unexpected, but dashing and beautiful, like everything that happens in this film.

There is a lot more to say, but Finding Spock is exclusively for gourmets, for amateurs, for those who know how much behind this fun company. This is a film about old heroes and eternal moral values, but in a new way.

If the Track has changed, has ceased to be what its first fans remember, then it happened gradually and quite logically, like everything the Vulcans put their hand to. Simply the most obvious collapse of the old world came when the Enterprise made its final flight, tracing a line of fire across the sky for the planet Genesis. New World – New Track. And so on many, many times. And for each of these new Tracks, a special corner is reserved in my heart.

Admiral Kirk’s midlife crisis seemed to him of paramount importance. But only until he received a message from the planet Seta Alpha 5 that his old enemy had appeared, hungry for revenge.

Khan, a genetically created superhuman with highly developed intellect, physical strength and ambition, has already met once with the Enterprise’s crew, but then he and his people, who decided to seize the ship, were stopped and left as punishment on the first habitable planet they came across.

And now, after 15 years, Khan was able to get out of his forced hermitage. And he has only one goal – to destroy Kirk, whom he considers the culprit of all his misfortunes. The long-standing confrontation between two strong personalities will now unfold against the backdrop of the Federation’s secret experiments on terraforming planets.

But this time, Kirk will have to defeat, whatever the cost, and he will have to start by defeating his own ego …

Over and over again I have found that the order of viewing Star Trek 2009 -> CBT -> all other feature films – was the right choice. After all, how many more wonderful discoveries is the last film preparing for me? It turns out that Abrams is not such a villain as it sometimes seems, and Kobayashi Maru really exists, and Kirk passed it three times, and the phrase taken in the epigraph of this text is not just a random set of sounds.

Kobayashi Maru for a real trekker is to relive and comprehend the ending of ‘Wrath of the Khan’. Stopping nervously biting his nails, calming his frantic heartbeat (I’m sure all this is present both in the third and fourth viewing), convince himself that this is exactly how it should have happened.

Meanwhile, on the fronts, everything is as before. The team is partially slowly aging, partially overgrown with strange and so far faceless offspring (why is a separate question, more on that in the next series). But he still stubbornly stomps where a person’s foot has not yet stepped.

But in this film you can look at the ideal of a Man (just like that, with a capital M) of the old times. This, of course, is Khan with his sophisticated mind, powerful physique and Nordic character. Not very much like, say, Robert Pattinson, right? And also – to admire the real Friendship (yes, that’s right, with a capital D). Friendship and faith in the best, which all these guys charge through the screen, even under the most unfavorable circumstances.

But is there, in essence, a difference where to fly? When the whole universe lies in front of you, when you again got on the ship on which you know every millimeter; when, under your command, a team that was with you where no man’s foot has stepped, a team that understands you perfectly …

Does it really matter how much time has passed? Ten years in real life, six months for me, which seemed to have just been an eternity, and now, when the credits of this film have ended, they have disappeared into some unknown place.

This film was released in 1979, that is, two years after the ‘New Hope’. After a new step in world cinema, the first part of that film, which has managed to become a fantastic epic of really all times and peoples. For all my ardent love for ‘Trek’, looking at its ‘popularity’ in Russia (especially if we take it before 2009, before the Abramov film), the same cannot be said about it. Maybe it’s for the best. However, I’m not talking about that now, but about the fact that Roddenberry also began to bet on the epic. He took his old recipe for success, saved up some money, became skilled in special effects, conspired with Jerry Goldsmith, who wrote the music that later adorned the screensaver of the series ‘The Next Generation’ – somehow it all went like that. On the one hand – recognizable and beloved, on the other – completely new.

And even the entire cast seemed to be divided into two irreconcilable camps. Some have to look for familiar features in appearance and behavior. Others seemed to have conspired not to change and freeze in time just the way we remembered them in the TOS. For example, I find it hard to believe that an angry McCoy with his ‘I’ll first watch your molecules scatter across space’ in this film is already sixty. And no one can convince me that Mr. Spock’s face is no longer as calm as it was ten years ago. Here’s something, but, by the way, he has preserved equanimity to this day. As well as the ability to put a hand on someone’s shoulder in time. However, I’m not talking about that again.

It is no less difficult to believe that Admiral Kirk, this very Admiral Kirk, is the same person as Captain Kirk, this is the gouging and thunderstorm of the female population of the entire galaxy. Or Chekhov – this is an amazing, frightening adult, but still the same Chekhov.

About special effects, theme, etc. I will not speak, everything has already been said before me. Finally – perhaps only about the reason why I cannot rate this film.

It is difficult to say how I would have estimated it if it had not been for the preliminary study of the TOC. In general, my assessment of that series is –

this is the one that can be put to the whole honest company of Shatner-Nimoy-Kelly-Takei-Nicholls-Koenig-Duen-Barrett-Roddenbury (Who have you forgotten? Sergeant Major Rand?).

Perhaps all my grades remained there. Here is pure pleasure.

For the great people hard times came: the warlike tribe of the Huns attacked the country. Dressed in men’s clothes, Mulan joins other warriors and sets off on a dangerous trek to the foot of the snow-capped mountains. She is accompanied by a funny dragon Mushu, who looks more like a small dog than a mythical monster.

Trying to hide a secret, they find themselves in funny situations and do not suspect that their secret is about to be revealed! …

Cartoon “Mulan” is based on the legendary Chinese myth about a girl who risked her life to save her father from imminent death. The creation of Walt Disney Pictures undoubtedly continued the heyday of the oldest film studio in the United States. Eleven years after the release of the film on wide screens, “Mulan” has become for me an undeniable classic of the genre, taking a place of honor alongside other famous and outstanding animated creations of the Disney studio.

The director’s duet of Barry Cook and Tony Bancroft coped with their task in a peculiar way, showing the viewer a harmoniously cohesive picture, an excerpt from the beautiful life and at the same time looking for her “I” Mulan. Dry numbers, dear reader, say that the people liked the cartoon. Having collected more than 200 million in net profit, “Mulan” acquired fans and fans all over the world, including in Russia.

The cartoon reflects both comedy and drama elements. The comedic component is simply replete with humor, various gags and jokes belong here, so the picture just stargazing of various, charismatic and, most importantly, funny characters. Naturally, every cartoon teaches us something, and Mulan is no exception. What is the best way for a person to learn the lesson taught? In my opinion, this is best done through the grief and personal drama of the hero, whom we deeply sympathize with.

In this case, this is an ordinary country girl with a character very unusual for ancient China. She tries with all her might not to disgrace the honor of the family, however, with all her desire, Mulan cannot overcome her violent temper and rebellious nature. The viewer empathizes with the heroine even when she, breaking all the precepts and traditions of her ancestors, runs away from home. A competent synthesis of drama and comedy is what raises any cartoon an order of magnitude higher than other colleagues in the genre shop.

Fabulousness, philosophical wisdom and alluring antiquity – this is exactly what you experience when watching a cartoon. The life of the ancient Chinese is perfectly recreated: women gave birth to children, and men fought. With all this, it was imperative for everyone to serve the emperor in peacetime and in wartime, as well as honor their ancestors. The inviolability of age-old traditions was embodied by the philosopher-emperor, so splendidly drawn by the animators.

Of the characters, I would especially single out the dragon Mushu, who was voiced as always by Eddie Murphy. The voice is the power that can endow the drawn character with the qualities that the voice actor desires. Eddie’s dragon turned out to be just extremely wonderful: moderately boobby and funny. Of course, I would like to point out Mulan herself, whose gags repeatedly caused fits of laughter. The episode where she meets the matchmaker or the scene in the camp where she tries to feign the habits of men are commendable. The animators and screenwriters did their best and this is an indisputable fact.

A separate topic is musical accompaniment. Extremely amazing songs by the famous composer Jerry Goldsmith, one better than the other. At one time, when I was still a schoolboy, the songs did not leave my head for a long time after watching the cartoon. And I’m not the least bit surprised that one of them was nominated for a Golden Globe. I express my admiration.

Yes, of course, at the time of the creation of “Mulan” and the same, my beloved, “The Lion King” there were no such technologies for creating cartoons as it is now in the 21st century. And this does not make the paintings look worse, on the contrary, in them we see something that, due to progress, we will never meet again – the uniqueness of the animation techniques, the special style and presentation of the characters. And this should also be appreciated …

Let me summarize. A classic that needs no evaluation. Watching and revising is my verdict.
