When you look at another Tim Burton creation, you can’t help but wonder if the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is blind.

After awarding the long-awaited ‘Oscar’ to Martin Scorsese, the title of the most underrated director goes to Barton. It’s one thing when film academies persistently avoid awarding Lynch’s or Shyamalan’s films for their atypicality and informality, but what’s so unappealing about Barton? Ordinary viewers have long loved him and gave him all sorts of ‘Oscars’ and ‘Globes’.

His creations have no analogues in modern cinema. Because he doesn’t make dramas, comedies or horror movies. He makes fairy tales. But not fairy tales for children, fairy tales for adults. Sometimes romantic like ‘Edward Scissorhands’ and sometimes mysterious and sad like ‘Sleepy Hollow’.

Briefly about the plot of the movie, New York XVIII century, a young constable with reforming tendencies is sent to the town of Sleepy Hollow, where there is a series of mysterious murders that must be investigated. You’ll say it’s a detective – but you’re wrong.

It turns out that the murders are committed by a mysterious headless horseman, who then takes the heads of his victims, and of course not without black magic. Say mysticism and fantasy – again wrong, this is not ‘Van Helsing’ and not ‘Dracula’. There is a love story in the movie, but it’s not another love story or melodrama. There is no name for this genre yet, for only Barton can come up with it.

The atmosphere, movie sets and sound effects are inexpressible. And also uncomplicated plot and a little humor plus excellent acting by Depp and a little worse, but at the level of Christina Ricci – a rattling mixture that does not allow the viewer to tear himself away from the screen until the final credits.

Separately I would like to say about the performer of the main role. Of course, it is Johnny Depp, Tim Burton’s favorite actor. It is very difficult to imagine any of Barton’s masterpieces without Johnny Depp playing the main role. I honestly find it hard to imagine performing the role of Ed Wood or Edward Scissorhands with anyone else. Depp has a phenomenal talent for getting into his roles, which is epitomized on screen. I think it’s hard for fans of ‘Pirates…’ to imagine, say, Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise playing Jack Sparrow.

In this movie, Depp, as in many of his others, is a bit troubled, nervous, with his own quirks, such as the fearless constable, scared to death of spiders and calmly conducting an autopsy on a corpse or hiding behind the back of a boy helper in the cave of an evil witch. As a hero-lover, he is also very funny: believing in the headless horseman, black magic and spells, he answers his beloved’s accusations of heartlessness: ‘I have not experienced feelings, I am constrained by the chains of reason’.

In general, Depp in this movie is exactly as he was loved by many fans to which I include myself.

Hidden meanings and deep morals in the movie I somehow did not notice, if someone found them, please share with everyone.

In general, to all those who have not watched it, I strongly advise: If you want to immerse yourself in a completely different world, created by the unrecognized genius Tim Burton, enjoy the game of Johnny Depp, feel the atmosphere of the fairy tale and just enjoy the spectacle, then this movie is for you.

Here’s another serpentine fantasy for you. It sounds tempting and silly at the same time. Also, this movie was not at all what I had hoped for.

“The Dragon Beater” caught my eye in Total DVD magazine’s ranking of the top twenty best fantasy films. Of course, I was fired up. I was excited, hoping for some reason for a bright and colorful magical story.

And to check it out I got a grim story about the early Middle Ages. The Dark Ages, as I understand it.

A time when Christianity was still taking its first inexperienced steps across Europe, already old by then. And magic was flourishing, and creatures like dragons were as real as dogs today.

Times when ancient rituals had not yet been completely forgotten or twisted by medieval courtesan tales.

For example:

In the tale, a hero appears and frees the girl from the monster to whom she is bred to be eaten. In reality, in the era of the rite, such a “liberator” would have been torn apart as the greatest wicked one, endangering the well-being of the people, endangering the crops. This fact shows that the plot sometimes arises out of a negative attitude toward a once-existing reality. Such a plot (or motif) could not yet arise as a fairy tale when there was a way of life that required the sacrifice of girls. But with the fall of this way of life, a custom that was once revered as holy, a custom in which the hero was a female victim who sometimes voluntarily went to her death, became unnecessary and disgusting, and the hero of the tale is already the wicked man who prevented this sacrifice.

In “The Dragon-Winner” this is very evident. The people are against the custom of giving girls to the dragon, and at the same time, the wizard who volunteered to help, they chase away in disgrace, and the king’s daughter goes to a voluntary sacrifice for the good of all society.

That is to say, despite the fairy-tale nature of what’s going on, the movie turned out to be too darkly-medieval. Realistic even, I would say, if there were no mages and dragons. And that’s why it was a lot harder to watch than all the other stories about the Middle Ages fictional-unreal (the thirteenth, in other words, the kingdom).

That’s both the plus and the twist of “Winner” and that’s also its disadvantage.

In such a case, I would have to conclude as follows. “The Dragon Beater” is good, but too serious for a fantasy film, which even a fan of fairy tales finds it hard to revisit repeatedly.

The new hire, which caused such a storm of negativity in the reviews of fans of the saga, seemed to me more than a good end to the story. I again have a “dissenting opinion that does not coincide with the majority. Since I am not a fan with many years of experience, but rather an amateur, I am more loyal to playing with the canon. For me, the best trilogy inside the saga is the one that tells about Anakin Skywalker (parts with numbers I, II, III) – she not only perfectly expanded the background of what is shown in the canon, but also filled the story with romance, strong emotional plot twists and depth disclosure of characters of heroes. I adore Anakin and Padme, I love Obi Wan Kenobi and master Yoda, so no other parts can compare with these parts. It so happened that the prequels, as a rule, touch me more than the main story.

As for what they started shooting at the end of six parts, I perceive it as “based on films that were created for those who miss the world of a distant, distant galaxy, lightsaber battles, flights through time and space and the rest alive to former heroes. Han Solo, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, Obi Wan Kenobi can not leave indifferent those who love this story, and new characters that keep up with the times and modern technologies are designed to attract the younger generation.

Of course, what was filmed in the last trilogy is much weaker than what was shot before, but if you try to disengage yourself and watch them as movies based on their motives, they may well be liked. The main characters of the new trilogy are not as bright and charismatic as their predecessors, but interesting plot twists and a vivid picture in some way smooth out this jamb.

The last part, in my opinion, turned out to be better than the previous two – it is not only more colorful, but also collects everything that the fans of the saga would like to see – the puzzle is finally added up, all points are set, secrets are revealed, good triumphs over evil, and at the same time, the viewer has the opportunity to go back and see the heroes he loves, bright space battles and the very struggle of the dark and light principles in the soul of the characters. All this is framed by a very beautiful visual and pleasant music. I watched in 3D, and this format fully paid off – the graphics are absolutely fantastic.

I was pleased with the game of Adam Driver, you can see how his acting skills have grown since his first appearance in the saga. I liked the line of droids, including the new Kulechek droid. All the shown “flashbacks evoked pleasant memories of the events of all past parts – it seems that not so much is shown on the screen, but there are dozens of pieces of the plot from all previous parts in the head.

Although this trilogy is rather weak compared to the previous ones, the final film could leave me a pleasant aftertaste at the end of this story.

Here it is – the darkest and most cruel film of the entire saga. Having released the classic trilogy of episodes IV-V-VI at the beginning, the creator of the franchise, George Lucas, has released three prequel films over the years, so that the whole picture of the Star Wars universe is clear. Now, after the release of the “final third episode, all parts of the mosaic have merged together, giving us in total the most famous fantastic saga in the history of cinema, which has no analogues so far.

Perhaps, quite a while ago, a fantastic blockbuster did not shake me so emotionally. If in the previous parts the atmosphere of expectation of some terrible event prevailed, then the entire third episode is this very terrible event, with all the consequences that follow from this. Without a doubt, this part can be called the darkest and literally desperate in the whole saga. Even the gloomy and philosophical fifth episode (which, in my opinion, and not only mine, is the best in the saga) “The Empire Strikes Back remains a bit in the shade (precisely in terms of the oppressive atmosphere).

This is a somewhat controversial proposition, because in this case the emotions of the audience are manipulated by general injustice and, in fact, all emotions are caused by a simple way of demonstrating cruelty, so for me personally, the above fifth seems a little more honest. But I do not detract from the merits of the third episode. He is without a doubt the best in the new trilogy.

What I liked most about this tape was its focus and director’s viewing angle. Due to the fact that we already know the denouement, the director could simply choose the position of the observer and simply logically bring everything that happens to the initial actions of the fourth episode. But Lucas took a different path: he made the audience literally empathize with what was happening, and I’m sure that for the majority somewhere in the depths of my soul there was a tiny spark of hope that something would change and the feeling of general hopelessness would disappear.

To create a sense of ownership, our good uncle Lucas demonstrates all the events from the point of view of Anakin Skywalker, at some points deliberately making the Jedi more formidable and … selfish or something. Again the very double bottom appears in the plot, which I appreciate most in this saga. Everything has a double meaning. Yes, Anakin fell on the Dark Side of power, but it all started with love, which he desperately did not want to lose. Here is evil for you …

It is especially touching that all of this could have been avoided if the Jedi were less reckless. Throughout Anakin’s career, the Council rotted him for disobeying the code of the order, however, in the climax of Mace Windu and Darth Sidious, a member of the Jedi Council himself wanted to cross the line and kill unarmed despite the same Code. Perhaps this was the impetus of Skywalker to betrayal. Well, once you get to the Dark Side, as Yoda said, you will forever bind your fate with it.

We can talk about the philosophy of the series for a long time, so it’s time to move on to something else. For example, memorable episodes. The visual perfection of the third episode is simply magnificent and, as always, is out of time: our future kids will surely watch this tape without any twinges of conscience. After watching, literally squeezing all the emotions out of you, you are unlikely to want to review the film (except after some time), but individual episodes constantly pop up in your memory: the opening battle with droids to save the Chancellor, the murder of Windu, the fight with Grievous and of course, the final battle lightsabers between two best friends. This is perhaps the most epic and most difficult, from a moral point of view, episode of the saga.

In my opinion, there were no problems with the dynamics either. The dialogs are lively and interesting, and the battle scenes are adrenaline and completely boring. No less enthusiasm is caused by music. The London Symphony Orchestra did something incredible – from the music literally goosebumps run through, so after watching I immediately found a soundtrack in order to resume those very impressions.

Errors in the acting aspect have also been eliminated. Hayden Christensen, who was the weakest link in the ensemble of the previous episode, apparently prepared thoroughly for this tape – he pulled out all his dramatically episodes perfectly, and his look in the second half of the film was something indescribable. Here he is – Darth Vader without a mask. Finally, the second-order actors, who this time played their characters brighter than usual, showed themselves: Samuel L. Jackson and Ian McDiarmid were simply magnificent and colorful as never before. Natalie Portman is still beautiful and in the finale it was even sad that the new trilogy is ending. Evan McGregor has already demonstrated in his character the features of the old Obi-Wan from the classic trilogy, which is already worth a lot.

Star Wars: Episode 3 – Revenge of the Sith – a true masterpiece not only in the genre of science fiction, but for the whole cinema as a whole. In terms of emotional level, it can be compared with the best episodes of the saga – V and VI. So, to all lovers of emotional, spectacular and simply high-quality cinema – my sincere recommendations.

Star Wars: Episode 6 – The Return of the Jedi is probably one of those rare moments when the viewer doesn’t want to end. No, of course, everyone is immensely happy that the side of the World will win a much-desired victory over the Dark Force, but I didn’t want to end the “old trilogy, it was too disappointing to say goodbye to our beloved heroes. But such a decision was made by George Lucas, the main inspirer of the cult science fiction saga, who also replaced the director in the third film (Richard Marquand came to replace Irwin Kerschner).

George Lucas, apparently, long before filming decided to shoot every part every three years, and “Episode 6” was released six years after the starting tape of the space epic. And it must be stated that even by such a somewhat long standards, Star Wars did not lose its amazing power in all its components. There are plenty of spectacles, visual loads. George Lucas (already as a screenwriter) and Lawrence Kazdan again added a “sharp” in the visual plan: what are the chases in the high forests on flying motorcycles. They didn’t forget to add some new race – in this case they were able to anticipate themselves when funny, funny, small, but heroic ewoks won such love from the audience that they then shot an entire series about them. And they didn’t forget about the climax – it was just amazing, it was on two fronts, and both of them were extremely entertaining and attracted insatiable interest.

The heroes, or rather, the actors who performed the main roles (Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford), as they say, “sang.” This trio created inside the computer special effects also rich personal relationships that cannot be called romantic with full justification, but the romance of the struggle for the idea is for sure. It is a pity that in the future the careers of the first two did not go, but Harrison Ford was already a “star at that time, but he did not pull the blanket over himself, yielding to the conditions that in the 80s of the last century, first of all , it was the quality of the movie, and not the amount of finances invested in various promotions even before the film was released in order to immediately recapture their hard-earned money, and it was desirable to repel them right away. So at that moment lies the success of Star Wars – it’s not a purebred blockbuster of the “era of full popcorn, it’s also the realization that George Lucas thoughtfully and imaginatively served us such a tidbit that there are so many ingredients that you can easily go astray from the account, but not one interferes with the other, but only complements, creating something unimaginably tasty.

Each episode of Star Wars has its own genre and stylistic difference, which makes the world famous saga so versatile. If in the first episode this is the predominance of action, then the trump card of the second part is romance, which fills the picture to the brim, permeating the episode with the love and magic of unearthly feelings that George Lucas was so eager to show us.

Some call this film one of the worst episodes of the Star Wars saga, but Lucas knew he was shooting. Now, one of the main lines around which all events revolve and will revolve is love, it was the director who devoted the most beautiful shots of the film to her.

Those 10 years that have passed since the events described in the first part have globally changed not only the democracy and politics of the Republic, but also from a smart little boy they have made a handsome and stubborn young man who does not know failures and mistakes. The image that Hayden Christean got really complicated and difficult, but the actor coped with his role perfectly. It is not so easy to convey to a handsome young man who does noble deeds, but with an evil gleam in his eyes and lips quivering with anger.
Bravo, bravo!

Anakin is young and ardent, educated according to the Jedi charter, he is noble and kind, but the other side, hidden from view, which only Padme will know for several years, burns, eager to break out. Anger, evil, bitterness, this is the part of Skywalker who can use it at any moment.

The confirmation of this is the death of the mother and the bloody party after her. Simultaneously with the beginning of the Clonic wars, the dark side of Eni also opens, leaving an evil gleam in her eyes and tears rolling down her cheeks. And that’s all. The countdown has gone. And the image of Darth Vader involuntarily rises in the head. The Jedi Council itself dug a hole for itself, predicting the fate of the galaxy, because it is here that everything begins, in “Attack of the Clones”

Involuntarily, the love of Eni and Padme, in the brilliant, by the way, performance of Natalie Portman, becomes not only the center of the whole plot of history, but also its continuation, which is confirmed by the last shots of the episode.

However, to call this picture a melodrama is also impossible, the second genre piece of tape is action. Fights, shooting, unearthly creatures and space flights are also not here. one execution on Geonosis, which is worth. The battle of Dooku and Yoda is simply beyond praise.

If you do not peer into the episode, perceiving it as an ordinary movie for relaxation, then this part will seem happy and joyful, but you will peer into the essence of things, watching the Republic slowly plunge into chaos, and the impudent boy turns into Darth Vader, involuntarily shudder at the thought of how tragic and predictable is the situation planned by the future emperor of the galaxy.

Bravo to George Lucas!
