Even though the plot of this film is based on a stand-alone comic book, the analogy with ‘Men in Black’ is self-evident, and it is impossible not to notice the almost identical concept here. In such a situation the hopes for originality disappear by themselves; but there are hopes for a decent realization of the familiar concept, for which the not-so-small budget also disposes. But there are many films this year with solid potential to become long-running franchises that unquestionably blew their potential with mediocre realization, and R.I.P.D. seems likely to join these ranks.

From the very first shots, the film tries to be ironic, featuring ‘something’ bouncing around a skyscraper and Reynolds’ character’s ‘You think you’re having a bad day?’ comment. And then we are immediately taken back to the events that took place ‘three or four days ago’, when unaware of his untimely death Nick Walker (Ryan Reynolds) was burying some gold wreckage in the yard of his house, hastily disguising the place with an orange tree. It wouldn’t be long before Nick would be mortally wounded in a gunfight, and after ‘ascending’ to heaven would receive an offer to join the ranks of the ‘Rest in Peace’ department on a voluntary-forced basis. ‘Celestial Chancery’ here is mostly like a bizarre mix of ‘Men in Black’ with ‘Parallel Worlds,’ only without the ingenuity of the former and the enormity of the latter. Nick’s new chief (Mary-Louise Parker) introduces him to his new partner, Roy (Jeff Bridges), a department veteran. “In my day, people like me were called lawmen,” Bridges’ character informs him, making an ironic reference to Iron Grip. But to compare the actor in the two films is like comparing Schwarzenegger’s performance in ‘Terminator 2’ with his performance in ‘Terminator 3’: it seems that all the expected grins, grimaces and intonations are in their places – but the effect is zero. Instead of a living charismatic hero here we see only a template image of an older grumpy partner, issuing all the wealth of duty replicas, which had enough to the authors of the dialogue. Without thinking twice, the partners go on a fresh mission, and the older introduces the younger fluently, explaining the essence of the dead men and presenting one (!) Type of departmental weapon. That is, there will be no abundance of a variety of ingenious gadgets, as in the same MIB. And in general – the whole concept of the afterlife with the corpses living on Earth and trying to avoid the Last Judgment this way looks very crude; many moments have the character from the series ‘don’t ask too many questions’ – and that would be excusable if the movie properly fulfilled its main entertaining function.

In fact, the film fails to enthrall with its story in any way. The overall mood here is imbued with secondaryity, linearity and a complete disregard for improvisation. And it can be seen at every level of the picture, be it the standardized dialogues, replete with painfully formal and therefore unfunny jokes, or the banal storyline, fluttering so obviously that in the second half the interest to what is happening disappears completely. Having presented their cardboard heroes to the audience by means of absolutely faded dialogues (they might as well have just put signs on them: ‘Old grumpy cop’ and ‘Young disobedient cop’), the creators first give them some time to fool around, some time to grieve, and then, having sketched out the background of a dull apocalypse, they switch to a methodical reproduction of boring action sequences, which peak monotony falls on the tedious finale of the film.

Meanwhile, it is not quite clear why the film, frankly designed for a family audience, has a couple of glimpses of rather vulgar jokes. Not cheesy, of course; it doesn’t ruin the rating – but still. If the film, as a whole, had been a little bolder, that would be one thing; but in this case, it’s all aged in a lightly naive mood, from which these moments are severely out of place. Besides, the jokes themselves aren’t all that funny – and the movie wouldn’t have lost anything if they had been cut. On the whole, ‘R.I.P.D.’ belongs to the category of pictures which evoke no emotions except boredom and bewilderment. It is uninspired, lacking in originality, intrigue and drive, and the use of 3D in such an average visuals is hardly justified.

‘Come to think of it, it was kind of easy to get that cab…’
“Planes, Trains & Automobiles” is one of the singular American comedies in which the humor can be anything, but not vulgar and cynical, as it is common nowadays. Good comedies come out every year, but ones that are memorable forever after the first viewing are a rarity. This film, with the superb ‘Candy Martin’ acting duo, is one of them. In an hour and a half the main characters get into so many funny situations and do it so easily that it becomes even sad now – Hollywood is no longer capable of such things in the 21st century.

The plot, besides the actors, is the strongest point of this comedy. Neil Page, a successful advertising executive, had ‘bad luck’ with a cab when he was late for his flight. But that’s nothing compared to the man who keeps him company on the way home – the garrulous, good-natured jolly man, Del Griffin, played by John Candy, takes Neil through ‘seven rounds of hell’ as he tries to get to Chicago by any means possible – plane, train, car. You can’t count the number of funny moments here, the characters are funny every minute with mere facial expressions, not to mention the way the funny fatso Griffin ‘gets’ Paget everywhere he can.

Also, ‘Planes, Trains & Automobiles’ in a way can be seen as a light drama. The film is about the fact that there can be nothing more important than family in any person’s life, and besides, there are always people who remain human in any, the most ridiculous situation. Without all of the pathos and snooty cynicism that turns us into pathetic, closed minded individuals. It depends on one’s taste, but it’s a good movie, because it makes you laugh and think about unchanging values. Steve Martin has a lot of completely different comedies, both great and not so great. But in John Candy’s oeuvre, there hasn’t been one where you can look at his kind, open-minded characters without smiling. ‘Planes, Trains & Automobiles’ is probably the best.

You have to be a real loser and a talentless director like Sean Cunningham to spend $700,000 and make such a lousy slasher, while such truly talented people as Toob Hooper and John Carpenter with extremely small budgets made real masterpieces (“The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” “Halloween”), but “Friday the 13th” is a real failure, close to trash.

“Friday the 13th” does not give any enjoyment or horror to the deaths of the characters in this movie, because their deaths just remain “behind the scenes”, which begs the question, why watch this movie at all if it does not satisfy the basic needs of the audience? Where is the actual spectacle and suspense?

Add to this an absolutely moronic action of the main character, who seems lazy to finish the antagonist of the film, running away from him a few meters, naively believing that the villain will not get up and go on to catch up with her, which looks extremely retarded.

The film had a lot of potential, but Sean Cunningham’s presence did its job, ruining such a great idea in the end, wasting such a solid budget and creating what many call one of the best slashers in the history of cinema.

After all, Joel Schumacher is a peculiar director, making very unconventional and very different films, almost every one of which deserves the audience’s attention. Of course, sometimes the director tries to work for the masses, and then you get failures (Batman Forever and Batman & Robin we all remember very well). But when he shoots in his own style, you get really original films. His films are chambery, not spectacular and rather cheap on a budget, but very atmospheric and tense.

The plot of this film tells the story of a group of medical students who, having heard the stories of patients about the light at the end of the tunnel, survived clinical death, decide to try this feeling. Their leader Nelson, with the help of a defibrillator and medicines puts himself in a coma, and a minute and a half later his friends bring him back to life. After experiencing something indescribable, he tells his friends about it, after which they also experience the same thing. But here’s the trouble – these actions have very serious consequences, because the whole time they’ve been in a coma, their brains have been dying.

Honestly, I haven’t seen a movie with a plot like this anywhere else. This theme, raised in the early 90’s, is still not hackneyed and is rarely used, at least on as high an artistic level as it is here. And rightly so, since Schumacher raises all kinds of themes in this film and doesn’t limit himself to just one. Philosophical subtexts come out of all the cracks, you just have to watch carefully. Here are themes of redemption, the importance of every action in our future lives. And, of course, the main theme is that beyond life is no longer our territory.

To be honest, after watching it I didn’t want to move from my seat for a long time, because I was still coming back from what I had seen. In principle, there is nothing shocking in the movie, but the very idea and its magnificent realization strikes the imagination. The characters were pitiful, you believed in their repentance from the very beginning. The story of Nelson, the group’s most memorable character, is particularly tragic in this regard. He evokes so many different emotions at various points in the film that it is simply impossible not to be moved by him.

The actors in the film are not the stars, but they are talented. Kiefer Sutherland is just the highlight of the program. He is the one responsible for the very Nelson, who is the best character here. His facial expressions and look are really great. He certainly outplayed everyone here. But his level of acting in no way diminishes the quality of the other actors. A superbly acted Julia Roberts (it is one of her most dramatic roles), Kevin Bacon shone on the screen, as always not dropping below a certain level. And of course, William Baldwin, in my opinion, who remained in the shadow of all the others both in terms of the quality of his acting and the character himself.

The Comatoseurs is a great mix of detective, thriller and drama. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen anything like this and I was extremely pleased with my viewing experience. Of course, someone may say that the plot is far-fetched, but I found the ideas expressed in the film very close and the characters very vivid. Exactly because of the essence, drama and atmosphere, I think this movie should be appreciated by all fans of the above mentioned genres. I think you will not be disappointed, the picture is really unusual.

I will start my first review the way many people usually do, i.e. with my expectations. Before I started watching it, I wasn’t expecting anything great, but I wasn’t expecting to see a terrible movie either. It came out something average.

Actors.

The acting is not outstanding, but not bad either. Mostly pleased with Denise Richards, you can probably guess why. I didn’t know Bill Murray was in this movie, so I was pleasantly surprised. Liked his role as a lawyer. Nothing more to say.

Music.

In simple words, it was not in theme, i.e. it was picked out wrong. At times it seemed that the music was ripped out of comedies and inserted here.

Plot.

I agree with those who say that the plot in a few words can not retell. It is also true that when you see a new turn of events you will think you have it all figured out, but you don’t. It shows a life where you can’t trust anyone (I won’t say that I completely agree with these words, but it is true in some ways. You have to be careful in life). The ending is really hard to predict, just at the beginning of the movie. Now to the main point. Actually this is the reason why my review (although it may not meet certain criteria) is negative. After the first turn of events, yes, I admit there was a bit of a shock. I was not expecting anything like that. Then another turn of events. But all the subsequent moments caused negative feelings. It feels like the screenwriter looked at his work and decided to just make fun of it by turning everything upside down again and again. The end of the movie is pretty predictable (it is near the end). It wasn’t hard to guess that when all a lot of people do throughout the movie is get rid of each other.

The screenwriter spins us around as he pleases. The plot is clearly unnecessarily twisted, in the end you get some kind of mush. And in general you can stop in the middle.

I don’t think I got the full message of my thoughts on the movie.

Pros: Denis Richards, Bill Murray, the beginning and perhaps the middle of the film.

Cons: Excessive suspense and music.

American comedy about the life of college students. What associations now come to mind after such a characteristic? I think that for the majority they are not the best, more precisely, specific, but immediately there is a spectacle with undisguised anatomy, animal laughter, puberty and jokes below the belt, they say, you can see nothing more in the company ‘under beer’. But it turns out that then, long before the appearance of ‘American Pies’, ‘Party Kings’ and all their retellings, a movie on a similar topic could have been somewhat different. No, laughter, funny situations and all sorts of jokes in the Animal House film are no less, personally, when I watched it, I just laughed until I dropped, but this laughter is caused not by one-off jokes, not the first freshness, but what is inherent in real comedy in the classical sense of this genre , what is then remembered and wants to tell. The degree of enchantingness and drive in this tape is brought simply to some transcendental stage, and the situations played out in the unfolding conflict between the ‘diligent nerds’ and ‘hooligans’ make you not only laugh heartily, but also think, remembering your own student or school years. The fact that the assessments that life itself puts do not always coincide with the student’s table of ranks and being a cheeky irresponsible slob-shirt-guy does not mean to be a lost person, and sometimes even better than an arrogant and hypocritical nerd. Again, to date, the topic has been played out and retold many times, but if the origins are interesting, then this is of course Animal House. And then, at the time when this film was released, everything was still not so obvious and the essence of this tape could be very provocative and bold.

An excellently staged enchanting comedy with bright acting. The legendary John Belushi is of course the most noticeable here, it’s just impossible to take your eyes off the unlucky and eccentric fat

This seemingly uncomplicated film is one of my favorites: these are films where the plot, taking overclocking from the first frame, slowly unfolds by itself, like in a documentary film.

The heroes do not play a role in it, they do not act out the scenes, they just live.

And then a giant earthworm crawls up to them (or rather, not a worm at all, it’s just a HIT, as the creators called this creature!). And that’s all: there is no way to tear yourself away from the film before the last monster is finished off (although it has been revised already, probably 10 times!).

I agree: this film has something of a western, and this is definitely a plus for him.

I love these films – where the action takes place in the great expanses of America, among a meager but mesmerizing landscape. Guys in cowboy hats on pickup trucks, women in plaid shirts tied at the waist …

Yes, the husband and wife will not save in front of the monster, but will take their guns and shoot back like the Real Heroes of America. So what if their boots are covered with the dust of the state of Nevada, it even suits them!

This is a film about fearless people.

I will watch it every time, from any place.

In this dramatic courtroom thriller, LT Daniel Kaffee, a Navy lawyer who has never seen the inside of the courtroom, defends two stubborn Marines who have been accused of murdering a colleague. Kaffee is known as being lazy and had arranged for a plea bargain. Downey’s Aunt Ginny appoints Cmdr. Galloway to represent him. Also on the legal staff is LTJG Sam Weinberg. The team rounds up many facts and Kaffee is discovering that he is really cut out for trial work. The defense is originally based upon the fact that PFC Santiago, the victim, was given a “CODE RED”. Santiago was basically a screw-up. At Gitmo, screw-ups aren’t tolerated. Especially by Col. Nathan Jessup. In Cuba, Jessup and two senior officers try to give all the help they can, but Kaffee knows something’s fishy. In the conclusion of the film, the fireworks are set off by a confrontation between Jessup and Kaffee.

A Few Good Men Review 4K
I’m not the greatest fan of Tom Cruise, yet A Few Good Men along with Jerry McGuire would have to rank as one of his best performances. Owing to a transition from stage to celluloid, the movie has the intimacy of drama written all over it.

The emphasis on facial expression, the length of dialog and the sheer drama make the watching of the movie a unique experience. The writer doesn’t cater for the unenlightened, doesn’t drawl over or repeat facts. Afterall, it is the experience of watching A Few Good Men that is a winner over and above all else.

Demi Moore is gorgeous alluring and vulnerable all at once. Worth a watch and perhaps another.

Tom Hanks, Gary Sinise, Kevin Bacon, Ed Harris, Bill Paxton,… all did a great job showing us the astronauts, their families and the flight crew on this doomed mission. Their performances made “Apollo 13” one of the better movies of the nineties. I reward it with an 8/10.
