TOP GUN (1986)

I like his filmography (The Last Boy Scout, Revenge, Rage, Days of Thunder, Enemy of the State, True Love, Deja Vu, etc.), he did not shoot any trash, though he did not go into religious delirium and art-house extravagances. He was a hard worker, and he died like a true creator, jumping off a 56-meter bridge in LA, blurting out in his last interview that “As a filmmaker he lived on the edge. And that’s the scariest and most dangerous thing you can do in life, because you’re constantly haunted by the fear of failure, of losing face and feeling guilty in front of people who believe in you.” So, the original movie was his debut studio work, which immediately set the trend for action movies, instilled a fashion for orange filters, action porn, and forged Tom Cruise into the kind of guy who is always running around and doing roofie stunts. It was wow cool then and even today, if you watch the movie from ’86, you can be pleasantly surprised by how much it is not outdated in its filming technique and presentation of visual material on the screen. A living classic.

TOP GUN: MAVERICK

The movie of 2022 is made as if to pay homage to the original and to the whole cinema of the beginning of the 80’s, it is full of nostalgia and every frame screams to go back to the times, when there were no VFX graphics, when everything was made by hands and magic of cinema. Where if you had to shoot on a ship, you went to a warship and shot. That’s what Tony did and Joseph Kossinski did, as if he were doing an experiment on himself, trying to emulate the creator. And it’s so cool that in places it looks like they got the whole U.S. Army involved to do that on screen. True, they couldn’t help it and at the end they made one scene of ‘graphing’, but it was very short and didn’t spoil the whole impression.

SYNCHRO:

It’s the case when you can enjoy the beauty of a shot, for once the cameraman doesn’t get nervous, doesn’t jerk the camera, it’s often static or follows the actor calmly. I noticed that noir tricks are used, silhouette shots, backlighting, there are even classic dialogue scenes at the blinds. There are a lot of tricks, but most importantly, they don’t irritate the eye. Everything works competently for quality: frame composition, lenses, editing and color. The artwork and makeup is top notch, everything is in the detail, sweat drops, retro pics, patches, costumes, helmet designs, dashboards, militarized interfaces, kayf.

ACTORS

The plot is not worth telling, it is not a godsend and clearly carries mediocre value on paper. But it’s definitely a case where it’s a pleasure to watch the actors in the frame. Tom is eternally young and in perfect shape again; Jennifer Connelly is a beautiful and appealing woman; Val Kilmer was filmed stricken with a real illness, you sympathize with him just by seeing him; Miles Telles is step by step a great actor and a favorite of J. Kosinski, perhaps his best role since Whiplash, or maybe not, since he starred in Refn.

CINEMATOGRAPHY FOR THEATERS.

The movie is strictly for the theatrical screening, and if you can, it’s better in IMAX, don’t deny yourself. I understand the studio and Tom waiting two years for the pandemic to subside. The roar of the engines makes you so squeezed into your seat that after the first flight you’re already sitting in the cockpit of the F15 with the pilots and experiencing real overload. I never felt such an adrenaline rush on the Super 8 as I did in the dogfighting scenes and dizzying maneuvers. The cockpit view and sound design work for total immersion. The perfect format for a movie like this.

And lastly, the closing credits, “dedicated to Tony Scott,” made me realize again that the movie lives and evolves, drawing the best from generation to generation. And most importantly, it touches me even more from the inside and awakens the brightest feelings in such difficult times.

Janine, the leader of scholars, declares divergences to be dangerous criminals. Having organized a hunt for them, she is looking for the strongest in order to discover an artifact that was left by the founders of the colony. He can shed light not only on the past, but also explain where the divergences came from, why and how to build a bright future.

The director of “The Time Traveler’s Wife” and “The Illusion of Flight” knows exactly what the female half of the audience of cinemas needs, while he is able to twist it and present it so that the male half can be safely taken into the hall. Robert Schwentke, unlike his predecessor, Neil Berger, could afford not to dwell on the introduction for a long time and not to reshoot the book page by page. The producers allowed him and a group of new writers to take the story from a different angle and further enhance the impact of cinema on the franchise.

The scriptwriters did not rewrite the chapters, but completely changed the concept. If in the book Janine is looking for divergences to create a weapon that no one can resist, then in the scenario the artifact took the main place. A favorite trick of filmmakers, when all the attention and the main plot is based on a riddle that is hidden, no matter what. The scriptwriters managed to simplify the plot with the help of this and at the same time complicate the construction of the story (thanks to which, the film has more vivid, memorable scenes). Also, thanks to the changes in the plot, the picture has become dramatically more balanced and complete. And the main character reflects less and takes up arms without consequences. True, despite all the efforts, the scriptwriters could not move away from the stereotyped and standard dialogues and scenes inherent in the genre.

Shailene Woodley and Theo James feel better about Tris and Four. They want to believe, although the chemistry between the characters is no longer there.

But Miles Teller, after his remarks about the first picture, decided to apologize and corrected himself. He plays well, and together with Ansel Elgort they occupy the whole humorous niche of the picture.

Ansel Elgortom, after the success of The Fault in the Stars, came to the liking of the producers and they gave him much more screen time in Insurgen than in the first part. They are strenuously trying to show him more domesticated and cultured than Four, but in the end he will have to enter the battle too.

Florian Ballhaus expanded the world that Alvin H. Kühler, operator of Divergent, opened to the audience. Ballhaus had to trick and show each faction in his own way, the creators paid great attention to detail, which makes the world of divergences even more real.

Joseph Trapanese wrote a breathtaking soundtrack that does not leave the audience until the end credits and amplifies all the emotional episodes at times.

Despite the fact that the second picture is very slightly inferior in duration to the first, it looks many times easier and calmer.

“Insurgent” is a picture that shows how the creators can carry out (if desired) work on errors, while leaving the field for continuation. When the film turns a very mediocre work by Veronica Roth into a blockbuster that will be of interest not only to fans of the divergent world, but also to those who just love to watch exciting stories on the big screen.

If you don’t like the first two parts, then you shouldn’t watch the third one either. I tell you this, I am the one who liked everything. I’m not kidding – I liked it, I’ll go to the final series in a year too. Although, of course, I will never mention the greatness of this movie.

The Divergent franchise is better than the books it was based on. At least I could not finish reading the book – I broke down on the first literary nonsense. But I watch films with pleasure. At the same time, even the desire to find out how everything will end will not force me to take up Veronica Roth again – a bullet in the forehead is better! Just kidding – I’ll just wait for the next episode.

Well, the third chapter of Divergent is unconditional film fast food. I admit. This is not “Ball of Monsters”, not “Unfinished Life” and not “Mad Max” – another genre, another style, another “dish”. But it also has the right to life. So what? By analogy – to eat some salads, bran, yoghurts and fruits? I love them. But even they, for all their deliciousness and usefulness, will eventually lead to brutality if you eat only them. Sometimes a fast food person is at ease.

The director Schwentke, whom I respect very much for “The Illusion of Flight”, this time filmed a kind of utopian melodramatic action movie, in which he got a little bit of everything. The commanders of the girls’ uprisings, some of the entourage and gadgets are from The Hunger Games. Some more – from Oblivion. He added to this a couple of his operetta villains, hints of one of them being fascinated by the ideas of eugenics, ‘James Bonds features’ to some characters (when a person wakes up in a couple of minutes after furious blows to the face and other important parts of the body) and the main love line, which, certainly could have looked boring if Theo James in the shot wasn’t so good again. There are enough actors in “Divergent” that I enjoy watching – Kew, Kravitz, Watts, Daniels, the same James … They don’t need a particularly dramatic acting that they are all capable of – not the format film. But they are here as appropriate high-quality expensive accessories that adorn a solid dress, which would look simple without them. So “the outfit took place.” Again – just for fans of the franchise.

Since his feature-length debut in 2009, Damien Chazelle hasn’t had much fun with funding: a year later, his script for ‘The Claim’ was added to the Hollywood ‘blacklist’, and two years later, he wrote ‘Whiplash’, which suffered the same fate. Nevertheless, the director did not give up, filmed a short film of the same name based on the latter and sent it to Sundance, where it was awarded an award, which allowed him to receive funds for the full film. Exactly a year later, Chazelle returned with a full-fledged film, which won two main awards at the end of the festival, equally impressed by both ordinary viewers and the jury. Special mention should be made of the fact that this film has nothing to do with a typical indie social, and received its awards solely for artistic achievements.

Miles Teller plays a dedicated drummer for whom music always comes first. Possessing the inherent youthful ambitions, he fears that he may repeat the fate of his father, who long ago abandoned the craft of writing and began to engage in more mundane things – therefore, he uses every chance to improve his skills in order to “achieve something in life.” Perseverance leads the hero to the famous Terrence Fletcher, famous not only for the wonderful sound of his orchestra, but also for his very aggressive temperament, which turns the lives of some of his wards into a living hell. J.K.Simmons is incredibly good at his role: just a minute ago, his hero calmly offered to ‘relax and get high from the process’ – and now he casts down streams of hatred on the musicians and swears like a shoemaker who does not know about such a concept as ‘Tolerance’ – you don’t expect such ingenuity in mockery from such an educated person. Particularly noteworthy is his trademark icy gaze, which seems to peer into corners of the soul that even its owner is unaware of. And what is characteristic, throughout almost the entire film, some ambiguity is felt, the attitude towards the characters periodically changes. You think that you are watching a film about one thing – and it suddenly turns out to be about something completely different, and so on.

At Amfest this year, ‘Whiplash’ was shown on the same day as Sean Christensen’s ‘Before I Disappear’ (this film was also preceded by a short film by the author) – and you could clearly see how a real, bold and talented movie differs from a pathetic attempt to shoot a typical indie the film ‘by all the canons’; with drug addicts, suicide, brilliant children and a bunch of inadequate humor. To some extent, Damien Chazelle shows the same fearlessness as his hero, who realized that the most important thing is self-confidence. Sincere self-confidence is very contagious. And you believe Chazelle. You understand that he had been hatching the idea for more than one year, and that the names of the legendary jazz musicians listed in the picture are not an empty phrase for the author. The film was shot with an incredible passion for music, which, in consequence, flows into a passion for cinema. The director is very meticulous in arranging scenes with live performances, paying attention to the smallest details – but at the same time, he does not forget about vivid characters and sharp dialogues, forcing the actors to give their best. The picture is beautifully thought out in its structure, which is created in such a way as to unobtrusively lead the viewer to a powerful climax.

The plot about the gradual formation of a promising musician, at first glance, does not bode well for anything original and extraordinary – but Chazelle makes him play with new colors, using it as the basis for his dizzying movie adventure. And in the end it turns out that reading morality to the viewer is the last thing that a director could think of. The main thing is emotions. The painting, subsequently, literally explodes and gushes with concentrated energy. Perhaps, when watching in the first hour, you will wonder why there is so much hype around the film, and what is so special about it – but the unforgettable climax strikes on the spot, and contributes to the injection of such an amount of adrenaline that not every thriller can do it. A solid achievement for a ‘musical drama’, isn’t it?

The most powerful feature of the new film by Joseph Kosinski is first of all a very careful and competent work with the characters. Watching each of them is equally interesting, whether the main character is secondary or secondary. The film manages to reveal and show the various problems of certain members of the detachment of the Granite Mountain from different points of view, and thanks to, in my opinion, a very nice caste, it is interesting to observe the development of characters from a purely visual side. However, this is where the main and only drawback of the film breaks through: its excessive involvement in human relationships, which leaves one of the most terrible natural elements on earth on the second plan.

There is no balance in the film. “Only the Brave 4K is first of all a story about 20 brave and courageous men, about their life and the formation of the first in the history of the municipal squad of specialists. The struggle with the elements does not seem to them to be something difficult, they are professionals and this is their job. Much more, the plot focuses on the causes and motivation to risk life every day, in order to save people and protected areas. And be that as it may, the picture manages to lure the viewer with its atmospheric, secluded, and willy-nilly, you begin to feel sympathy for the characters.

Despite the fairly large temporary jumps, the picture looks very solid and in the end there is no feeling of understatement. The only caveat is that instead of a couple of unnecessary and completely empty dialogs, one could pay a little more attention to one of the worst fires that occurred in Yarnell Hill and had really terrible consequences for many people. The rest of course no questions to the picture of Joseph Kosinski can not be. This is a worthwhile film about simple human truths: love, friendship, family, brotherhood. And with what respect it is shown deserves great praise.

Nowadays, this kind of level and the level of the pictures is extremely small, and even from some side I am a little offended that the film did not find its viewers at the box office. But I’m sure that he will find it now. “Only the Brave 4K is almost a reference example of how a real biopic should be, and photos of the squad after the final scene evoke strong emotions.

Four is the name of an important character in the movie. Apparently, it stands for poor writing, poor directing, poor casting, and poor acting.

Let’s start with the poor writing. Obviously this movie would be more enjoyable if one had read the book. Well, I hadn’t, and therefore I was confused because the back-up story was non-existent. The movie takes place in an dystopian society. However, nobody tells what really happened to the world. Without adding any spoilers, it is hard to specify why the quality of the writing is constantly so poor, but let’s just say that the story is so full of holes it looks like an emmental cheese.

Poor directing. Good directing could have compensated for the ludicrous writing, but in Divergent they seem to form an unholy alliance. The scenes lack credibility – especially the action ones. Because of this, Divergent is a movie for the children at best.

There are three characters that look somewhat the same. It took constant effort to keep on track on who is who. The absurd changing of the scenes didn’t help. However, the biggest mistake of the casting crew was hiring Shailene Woodley. Sure, it is cool to see a relatively new face in a big budget movie, but there is a reason why it is so rare – they cannot act.

The previous statement takes me to the final part, which rendered this movie close to unwatchable. The actors consist of young and inexperienced actors mostly. Because of the cheesy writing and directing, their acting seems even more horrible than it already is. Again, without including any spoilers, I won’t go any deeper, but just watch the so-called “chemistry” between Tris and Four… Makes you feel awkward, huh?

Finally, I want to clarify that I usually like dystopian films. In this case, I was expecting a rating of 7 or 8, so I’m still quite shocked because the movie fell below my expectations so badly. It just makes me so disappointed that this kind of budget goes to absolute waste because of these flaws I mentioned above. All in all, I wouldn’t recommend this movie unless you are a big fan of the books!
