In 2013, the action movie Antoine Fuqua about the seizure of the White House by North Korean terrorists, who are famously cracked down by Secret Service agent Mike Benning, more than doubled its budget at the box office. Even a somewhat similar film by Roland Emmerich “Storming the White House, where an experienced master of large-scale disaster films, seriously reduced the degree of jingoistic patriotism with humor and bright heroes, did not stop him.

The sequel to The Fall of Olympus was certainly not far off. But Antoine Fuqua refused to stage the production, considering the script stupid, but the Iranian emigrant Babak Najafri took over the baton. Before that, Najafri shot a completely different movie, and here is an interesting observation – directors from a completely different camp often turn out to be more wealthy in staging action films than the recognized masters, to whom Antoine Fouqua belongs.

The director, along with five screenwriters, seriously reworked the original message about a secret service agent who costs an entire army. Gerard Butler’s character does not have the charm that John McClane has, which is why you believe in Die Hard, but Antoine Fuqua’s film is difficult.

The rescue of the president from the hands of terrorists in a foreign city is arranged by Najafri with less pathos. Each link of the president’s security does its job, and Mike Benning no longer seems so invincible, having got to London, where he knows nothing. He’s scared, survives only by a miracle, and talk of the greatness of the United States is reduced to the final speech of Vice President Alan Trumble, justifying the invasion of other countries by protecting democracy.

Coming from a completely different environment, Babak Najafri knows the Middle East well and, as far as the genre allows, paints a different picture of the troubles befalling the United States. The main villain dreams of revenge on the Western world for the murder of his daughter with an American drone. In war, all means are good, so representatives of good do not choose means and are not at all afraid of accidental victims. The leaders of the terrorists are not brought out by complete villains – they have their own truth, and this clash of worldviews is much more interesting than the straightforward action of the original.

From a visual point of view, Najafri’s work is all the more good. Made as a shooter, in real time, the sequel will inevitably make you empathize with heroes whose goal is to get out of a city completely occupied by terrorists. In some ways, the film even inherits the classic action movie Escape from New York, where the main character also saved the president. But even more in it from video games, the film adaptations of which are now very popular.

Knowing the third part, it is all the more interesting to trace how elements of criticism of US foreign policy develop in the triquel almost into a parable about the relativity of good and evil in a multipolar world. Perhaps the time of aggression is really over, and the dialogue will lead to a good result much faster than a stupid demonstration of power.

In 2013, two consecutive films about the seizure of the White House were released on the cinema screens, and when it became known that the Storm of the White House was coming out, it could be assumed that it was a fake for the Fall of Olympus from the studio Asylum, but only looking at the name of the director and the budget figure, one could immediately prepare for a spectacle even more steep than the ‘Fall of Olympus’, because Roland Emmerich will not remove the hack. The fact that his film received laurels, and ‘The Fall of Olympus’ – mostly kicks, is outrageous, since both films are very good each in their own way. I was too lazy to read the numerous angry reviews of The Fall of Olympus, because, without even reading it, I know what it says: ‘a lot of blunders’, ‘solid special effects’ and ‘a lot of pathos’. Therefore, having watched the film and made my own opinion, I can recommend it to all lovers of vigorous militants with a simple and understandable meaning, who do not spit at the sight of explosions, do not pay attention to inconsistencies with real facts, and who do not hear words about the protection of civilians hitting their ears and political debate.

The first scene shows the tragedy in the life of the American president, when his motorcade has an accident on the bridge and his wife is killed. A year and a half passes, the president continues to remember his wife, living with his son, not suspecting that danger could again hang over his now incomplete family: unidentified combat aircraft appear in the air, which use the protective field against shots, continuing to head towards the White House, ignoring demands to leave the course, and the storming of the White House begins, the number of victims increases. The action with the capture of the White House continues for an extremely long time, and all these numerous skirmishes have time to get bored, but after that we will finally be told about the purpose of the capture and the identity of the invaders. The Koreans have encroached on the White House, wanting to end the civil war and unite North and South Korea. The US president is being held hostage, and the kidnappers are already looking for his little son as a source of pressure on the president. The former security guard of the presidential motorcade, who was fired after the incident shown at the very beginning of the film, is called to save the first person in the country, and this person knows how to first save the president’s son, and then knock information about their bosses out of the criminals who got in the corridors. Meanwhile, terrorists force a three-part code from the captured government, by entering which, you can gain access to America’s nuclear resources. We are waiting for not only cool action, which is not so much here, but also some interesting facts about the history of the White House and America’s political relations with Korea.

As you can see, the film is not devoid of meaning, plot, or important characters, and the action here for the background is an action movie, after all, not a melodrama. Everyone’s beloved Liam Neeson could have played the role of a fired security guard doing a dangerous mission – I even noticed that the actor who played this hero here is voiced either by the same person as Neeson in ‘Hostage’, or by a stunt double with a similar voice … As for the later released ‘Storming of the White House’, this is a completely different story, not like ‘The Fall of Olympus’, that is, no one plagiarized anyone, both stories are unique. Maybe not a masterpiece, but certainly a solid American action movie.

Not for me…
In my opinion, good movies fall into two categories: just good movies and professional movies. First of all, I think it’s not worth saying anything, the smart one will understand. On the second one, I would like to dwell on it in more detail. Their main feature is the minimum of dialogues. Have you noticed, by any chance, how many actors are talking in TV series (our and foreign)? That’s right, a lot and tedious. In professional cinema, well filmed, each phrase, spoken by the hero, catches the viewer with a sinking heart. Nothing can be said in it “for no reason”, “for a red word”. And the viewer remembers these phrases, he quotes them. And that’s the main difference between such films and other “trash”.

“Black Hole” is undoubtedly one of those professional films. It has a few other undeniable advantages. The first is the game of light. It underscores what needs to be emphasized. The second is skillful shooting, effectively transferring the accent, for example, from the figure of the hero – on his hand, or another part of the body. The third, of course, is the game of actors.

The Black Hole is not an example of stunning special effects. But who told you that this is the main thing in the movies? Birds – killers in infrared look very scary. Eating scenes, too. Everything else is darkened by the clear images of the characters and the acting. Here’s more details.

A group of people have been taken to an abandoned planet. Which, as it turns out, is crawling with devouring creatures that go out hunting at night. People have one way out – to escape. And everything works out perfectly here. Bright images of heroes, different from one another. There’s a junkie mercenary hiding behind a fed mask. And an archaeologist with an unbalanced psyche who paid the ultimate price. And a bravely reckless girl, pretending to be a guy, with whom the audience will meet in the second part in the face of an adult Kira. Everything is correct and corresponds to films of this kind: when the heroes get into an emergency situation and have to show firmness, the result – from the soul of everyone climbing what was hidden there before.

All the actors have played “cheers”, it makes no sense to disassemble each of them separately. Especially pleased Vin Diesel, who for me was never “just a hero with a pile of muscles. In my opinion, he is a talented actor, and to make sure of this, you just need to look not at the muscles and eyes. That’s where the cynicism of his hero makes you laugh and respect, the note of romance that opens at the end makes you freeze in front of the screen. I have to say, the mercenary, the hero killer, has never been one of my favourites. But Vin Diesel’s hero is a worthy exception to the rule. In the end, his cruel life made him so. And it’s not our place to judge. Rada Mitchell also distinguished brightly “honest commander”, which can not go against the concepts of honor, and a true game.

So, we have a great scenario with a decent, though predictable, outcome. The phrase of Diesel, said at the end, does not get out of my mind: “Not for me. Not for me.” How could a bloodthirsty killer say that?
