Although the Cold War is long over, covert mercenaries, whose skills in surveillance, espionage and force-fighting are literally legendary, remain in demand under the new world order and always find high-paying jobs. A certain mysterious client assembles a team of such “paid operatives,” known as “Ronins,” in Paris to steal a top-secret briefcase.

It soon becomes clear that this seemingly simple task is almost impossible: the same price is promised for the same briefcase to several other illegal groups.

To get the job done, a former CIA agent nicknamed “Sam” and his hastily assembled squad must do what they have never had to do before: trust each other…

Paris. An empty street, faintly lit by the yellowish light of a street lamp. At the foot of a dilapidated staircase are boxes of rotten vegetables. In the shadows of the house, lurking around the corner, a middle-aged man watches intently at the entrance to the diner. There, inside, behind the bar, the silent, tired bartender pours the last customers a beer. The diner closes. Two or three people with deep wrinkles on their faces and strange eye expressions wrap up their jackets and raincoats, ready to leave the establishment and plunge into the chilly Parisian night. That’s when the man who had been keeping watch over the house emerges from the shadows to walk surprisingly lightly up the stairs and open the creaky door to the diner. Before doing so, he glances around the street one more time and, bending over as if to tie his shoe laces, stashes his gun behind a vegetable box…

Have you ever read John Le Carré? Books about Cold War spies? Thrillers that show the hard, gray everyday lives of the spies we used to think of as James Bond? I, too, once thought that spies were good-looking, dressed in tuxedos, sipping martinis and seducing women while ridding the world of mad geniuses. I counted until I read the description of the hero of Le Carré’s books, George Smiley. The spy.

He was a chubby-looking man of medium height, well into his forties. Balding, blind-skinned, wearing glasses, with inflamed eyes and fidgety, nervous movements of his plump hands. He looked like a typical accountant, coming home every day on the evening train, sitting by the window with a newspaper and muttering something to himself. He was a clichéd, outliving yuppie who, once seen, would never be remembered again. There were thousands of people who looked so commonplace.

I was indignant: how could this fat, bespectacled mole be a spy? That’s why the writer did not want to make the hero of his books person remarkable, catchy? But very soon I realized that the choice of novelist was not accidental. A real spy, and should be so. Unremarkable, inexpressive, dull, inconspicuous. A man who day after day pores over his boring work, not attracting anyone’s attention. In reality, he is doing a difficult, dangerous job for his country.

And this work does not consist of chases and shootings, spectacular fights and stakeouts, it is routine, it is the long years of undercover life, which change the personality, leaving an indelible mark in the human soul. Eternal fear, sleepless nights, the habit of sleeping in your clothes, looking over your shoulder and warily listening to every rustle, memories of failed operations and torture, loneliness and constant longing. I learned from Le Carré’s books that the life of a spy is far from as spectacular and beautiful as that of Jan Schleming. It is a heavy burden and a burden taken on by people once recruited by intelligence. They grow old early, lose their illusions early, and believe in nothing but the perhaps phantom benefits they bring to their government.

These are the kind of people we are shown in “Ronin.” Former spies and now ordinary mercenaries brought together to carry out a mission. The employer is the poor, hungry and aggressive Irish Republican Army, an organization too poor to acquire the technology and information it needs for money, and therefore forced to plunder using ronins as soldiers. Why are former operative agents from different countries called ronins? Samurai, who have shamefully lost their masters, and are therefore forced to hire out to anyone who offers a reward?

Because the Cold War is over, and all those who laid down their lives to win this invisible but extremely brutal war are now, in this day and age, left behind. All of them found themselves thrown out on the street, betrayed, and unwanted by wars that nevertheless had to exist somehow. Times have changed, the Idea for which they lived and worked has disappeared, and now, aging, exhausted, professionals who never found themselves in the new times, come together to do the job for money. What did Jean Renault’s character do? He worked as a tour guide until he was invited to participate in the mission. And De Niro? This and that. Unknown. But they got together, and the chase began for the proverbial suitcase, which was to be intercepted, leaving one hand but not reaching the other.

Don’t expect a “Mission Impossible” style spectacle, there won’t be one. There will be no show, no special effects, no true spy shoot-em-up, no grandiose sorties and no less grandiose rescues. Real life will be shown, much of it unflattering, gray, dank and overcast life of spies. I love De Niro in this role, I love Reno, Skarsgard, Natasha McElone, Price, Bean and others. All together and each individually they are unremarkable looking men and men, but appearances are deceptive. They are extraordinary, brave, resourceful people, tough but solid, distinctive. People I respect infinitely. The wreckage, the shards of the Cold War.

I love this film. Shot in gray-blue tones, unfriendly and prickly, it is infinitely dear to me, and I love revisiting it, going headlong into the narrative and closely examining these interesting, deep, forever grounded in their hard work. In my opinion, “Ronin” is one of the best spy thrillers of all time. It is as if it were based on Le Carré’s book, and is completely in the spirit of that time – a time that has passed, however, forever settled in the empty, mutilated souls of former samurai.

I. World peace:

Great movie. A fitting end to the pirate trilogy.

There was not much excitement in the cinema where I came, but when everyone sat down and the film was shown, the atmosphere changed noticeably. We watched without stopping, many forgot about popcorn and drinks. And in the finale, many succumbed to the front, it was so interesting, but the feeling cannot be expressed in words … The audience did not clap after the end of the film, but left with a satisfied expression on their faces, cheerful and happy in their own way. Nobody discussed anything. No one criticized, damn it! There were no greasy jokes, no comments, everyone just watched. The silence in some moments of the film in the hall was such that there was a single feeling for the characters.

After the Reverend Renny Harlin’s Cutthroat Island, the pirate theme died in cinema, but thanks to producer Jerry Bruckheimer, screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, director Gore Verbinski and the entire crew, the pirates returned to cinema, and returned not losers, but winners. They may not have special awards, but they have us, loyal fans, beloved viewers, who in 2006 gave the second part more than a billion dollars.

The Pirates of the Caribbean triquel is the end of an era in new cinema, an era that lasted less than an era in the usual sense of the word, but that did not become less significant. Millions of children have received an amazing world of adventure, millions of adults have been able to return to it. Naval battles, exciting battles, sparkling dialogues between enemies and allies, countless and cursed treasures, and through all this – rum flows like a river, slapping slaps are heard, cries of drunken pirates – this is Tortuga, a haven for pirates of the Caribbean. Tortuga is synonymous with endless fun. Despondency has no place in the trilogy, but there is always a welcome for a true pirate – volatile, cunning, resourceful and cheerful. For if you are a pirate at heart, you give people a good mood. Cinematography has always been magical, enchanting and incomprehensible. Like the world of pirates in art of various kinds. Having united together the world of cinema and the world of pirates gave us a journey to … our world.

II. Successful triquel:

a) “Welcome to Singapore!”:

Triquel immediately gets down to business without any stories, throwing us into a gloomy and mysterious Singapore, where one of the Barons of the Brotherhood lives – a certain Xiao Feng, a strong and cunning pirate, whose guys look very impressive, and the ladies amaze with their oriental beauty.

Although there is little Singapore in the film, like Baron Xiao Feng himself, he sinks into memory.

Actor Chow Yun-Fat perfectly played Xiao Feng, not at all lost against the background of the snide Geoffrey Rush as Cap Barbossa. For some reason, some decided that this hero is unnecessary and generally superfluous in the whole story. Not true, for the main plot, he plays a role. Yes, and the hero is colorful, curious.

I was very pleased with the game of Rush – he definitely led the entire first quarter of the film, his crazy looks, as well as his smile, sometimes innocent, sometimes malevolent, depending on the episode, captivated the audience from one fell swoop.

The unusual change in the image of Will Turner has benefited the actor Bloom, who managed to diversify the correctness of his character. The same goes for the image of Elizabeth Swann, Knightley looked bold and believable. A rare case when the actors who were “beautiful furniture” (hello to a friend under the nickname Dolphin) do not annoy a bit, but only bring their smooth and therefore balancing play of the luminaries Rush and Depp to the film.

b) “Four of you have already tried to kill me, and one succeeded!”:

Davy Jones’ Stash is an excellent invention of the writers and a brilliant performance of his role as Johnny Depp, showing the stratification of the personalities of Jack Sparrow, who has completely gone mad in hell for pirates. At this point, the audience in the cinema hanged themselves to glory, watching Sparrow fight with himself.

The moment when hundreds of crabs transfer the “Black Pearl” to the sea, and Jack Sparrow stands on the mast, and his whole team froze near the water, will go down in the history of “Pirates of the Caribbean” – Captain Sparrow returns again, and again – phenomenal!

Before that, as you know, the team went through a lot to save Jack Sparrow, and I must say, the journey is wonderfully depicted in the film – it became visually beautiful, this ice passage looked great, as did the jokes associated with the poor monkey (what only did not have to endure!) and Pintel and Ragetti – this obnoxious couple of pirates. I would also like to note the game of Naomie Harris, who plays Tia Dalma. Even in the second part I liked it, but especially in the third, this symbiosis of a funny accent and a tragic love story. Shine!

When Jack Sparrow and the crew meet, it’s a funny episode. Here, the writers joked a little about the relationship between Jack and Elizabeth, and this is also a plus of the film: here everything changes, everyone becomes someone else, and therefore the tension in the film does not subside for a minute. Everyone liked the moment on the ship, when the pirates transferred muskets to each other. It was here that the game of Rush and Depp turned out to be important, playing quarrelsome, like old women, captains of one ship. The way they exchange “hairpins” to each other during the course of the film amused the audience.

c) “There has never been such a gathering in our lifetime!”:

In the triquel, all actions take place in four different territories:

1. The territory of Lord Cutler Beckett: this is the beginning of the film, which, like in the second part, struck with its unusualness. The song of the pirates before the execution cuts into memory. This is Beckett’s ship, where he calmly drinks tea with his “business approach” philosophy.

2. The territory of Captain Jack Sparrow: this is Jones’ cache, and the Black Pearl, and Tortuga, and the gathering of the Brotherhood of the Nine Barons. I liked the Brotherhood episode, especially the appearance of Keith Richards as Jack’s father. I was incredibly pleased with the appearance (finally) of the Pirate Code. The barons are worth each other, honestly.

3. Davy Jones territory: this, of course, is the “Flying Dutchman”: here Bill Nighy played Jones great (pleased the moment when the audience sees his real face), and don’t forget Jack Davenport as James Norrington and Stellan Skarsgård as Clap Bill.

4. Common territory: this is closer to the finale, where the Black Pearl and the Flying Dutchman will meet in a terrible whirlpool.

d) “This is a business approach…”:

I won’t tell how the film ended, I just want to draw the attention of the audience to the fact that the triquel is good because it clearly and nicely puts everything on the shelves, explaining both the sequel and even the first part.

Praise to those who survived, honors to those who died, even if they were villains. All the characters were at a brilliant level in the brilliant pirate trilogy. The deaths, in fact, turned out to be beautiful and memorable (with one exception, but I won’t say which ones – watch the film).

Someone made a peep, saying that in vain in films about pirates they reduced everything to mysticism, they say, this is for those little ones who love Harry Potter. So, dear comrade, I must explain: it was not mysticism that made the pirates, but they did it. The pirate world is so beautiful that it is full of tales, and tales are of various kinds, and why not be mystic in them? Mystique is an addition to the diverse and enduring world of pirates. No more.

As for whether there will be a continuation of the trilogy? Who knows, maybe there will be.

In any case, I don’t see it as a bad thing. After all, this is a “business approach” …

e) “Repeat this more often…”:

The triquel ended the four-year era of pirates in cinema, completed it, but it continues to live in our hearts, reverently referring to the mention of such a person as Jack Sparrow or Captain Barbossa …

The “Jolly Roger” will now always flutter in the wind of our efforts, and proudly rise above the other flags, reminding us all that there is no place for despondency in this world, and that we were born to make a fairy tale come true…

Long live joy!

III. What Pirates of the Caribbean gave us:

1. Captain Jack Sparrow: treacherous, cunning, but at the same time cheerful and cheerful pirate, plowing the Ship of His Black Soul across the Caribbean Sea.

2. Captain Hector Barbossa: sarcastic, reckless, but at the same time not boring and strong pirate, the true captain of the Black Pearl.

3. Captain Davy Jones: Striking looking, great dice player, great musician, excellent saber competitor. Legendary owner of the Flying Dutchman.

4. Governor Weatherby Swann: naive and sweet man, pure dandy, loving father.

5. Elizabeth Swann: a brave girl who came out of the governor’s daughters in pirates, risky and charming.

6. Will Turner: Former blacksmith turned pirate, real son of his father, brave and desperately fighting for the love of the one for which he is ready for anything.

7. Bootstrap Bill: a man devoted to piracy, a servant of Davy Jones, a father who is capable of any recklessness for the sake of his son.

8. Lord Cutler Beckett: an aristocrat who desired power over the Caribbean, a tea lover, a connoisseur of a “business approach”, a man of principle and prudent.

9. Boatswain Gibbs: a man who is always under the command of Jack Sparrow, an ardent supporter of rum drinkers, dancing at the sight of the Black Mark and going into battle to save the ship.

10. Commander James Norrington: doubtful man, undeniably strong willed, able to lose, a good opponent.

11. Tia Dalma: a woman who charmed more than one pirate, a fortune teller with a funny accent, in a word – a goddess.

12. Pintel and Ragetti: a daring pirate couple who don’t care about anything.

13. Cotton and his parrot: the couple is clearly wise.

14. Monkey: the character is extremely dangerous.

15. Xiao Feng: The majestic Baron of the Brotherhood, with an elevated and graceful style of speech.

16. Barons of the Brotherhood: people with a fine nervous organization, to be sure.

17. Father of Jack Sparrow: connoisseur of black humor.

18. A couple of officers: people who are ready to clarify everything in the world.

19. Cuttlefish Kraken: A very demanding gourmet.

20. Dog: nice fellow, knows how to keep keys.

IV. Jolly Roger smile:

Perhaps I did not get a clear review.

Well, this means that I was very impressed with watching the most anticipated movie for me this year. And that, in turn, means that the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy ended as it should have. Nice.

I’ve written a threequel review about five times, but each time I’ve stopped, shook my head, and started again. Something didn’t suit me, I didn’t like it. Until I realized what it was: the absence of truth. And the truth is that I really love this pirate trilogy.

She gave someone a good mood, and she gave me a second life.

Perhaps, having gone through all the negativity that accumulates in various media, through all human indifference, the vices of this world – greed, envy, hatred, the smile of the Jolly Roger will reach our hearts. Brings out the best in us.

Years will pass, and this pirate smile will not be erased from our souls.

I. Before sailing:

The first part of the adventures of the brave Captain Sparrow gathered a lot of money around the world, which allowed fans to hope for the continuation of the pirate saga, and the producers heeded the audience’s expectations, throwing all their efforts into creating a new mega-hit. As usual, fearing that the audience is not very “correct” about sequels and other joys of cinema, the producers decided to name the project – “Dead Man’s Chest”, which appeared in the famous pirate song back in Stevenson’s Treasure Island. In general, the song was about an island called Dead Man’s Chest, which got its name from the fact that coffins with dead pirates were thrown from it. But readers understood the phrase literally, and meant an ordinary chest of gold, which was once buried by a pirate, who eventually threw back his hooves.

The producers immediately appointed the unforgettable Gore Verbinski as the captain of the film crew, who skillfully worked on the first part of the franchise, and also filmed earlier The Mexican (where the spouses were played by Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt) and Mouse Hunt (which told about a very brave and smart mouse who fought with two idiots from the Twoleg squad).

Also, the producers decidedly left the former merry screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, who came up with a lot of details in the first part, in order to develop the plot of the continuation later, if possible.

The same Dariusz Wolski was appointed to the cameramen, and the composer Hans Zimmer tirelessly began to develop the musical theme “Pirates …”.

II. On my way:

But the main unknown during the filming of the blockbuster was the cast.

If Johnny Depp with gold teeth, all sorts of nonsense in his hair and a bandana, with rings on his arm, and the usual signature grin and gait, still playfully played the image of Jack Sparrow, and Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, having memorized their text, pretended to be walking dolls of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, and they were technically played along by Jonathan Pryce in the role of Governor Swann, the rest of the situation was pretty lame. The hero of Geoffrey Rush (Cap Barbossa) left the maritime space, as did Commodore Norrington, who disappeared after a failure on the love front.

Verbinski faced the task of captivating the audience with something radically new.

Of course, the screenwriters came to the rescue, offering as many as three new characters and the brilliant return of old acquaintances.

The first to appear on the big screen was a certain Mr. Beckett, who, as we will learn later, is the general manager of the East India Company. The villain is ordinary, but vile – hungry and thirsty for great honor and exorbitant power. Fate prepared to play this very unambiguous and flat character Tom Hollander (“Gosford Park”; “Darwin Award”).

Further, out of nowhere, a gypsy witch appears to the viewer, who has been friends for many years with Captain Sparrow himself. Tia Dalma, that’s her name. She was wonderfully portrayed by Naomie Harris (having nothing to do with Rosemary Harris, Peter Parker’s aunt performer from Spider-Man). This image of a witch was supposed to make the audience laugh, and the scriptwriters’ plan was a success.

But the formidable owner of The Flying Dutchman, Davy Jones, truly became the main scenario weapon. It was completely (almost) produced by computer means, and its image was embodied in reality, dressed in a special suit, by the magnificent British actor Bill Nighy (“Love Actually”; “Notes on a Scandal”). Jones and his sea brethren looked much more powerful than the Barbossian dead. The appearance of Davy Jones struck the audience’s imagination, captured him.

If the audience did not know the above three characters, then they recognized the following characters by watching the first part of the pirate movie novel.

First of all, this is Bootstrap Bill, the father of Will Turner Рa miserable servant of Jones, working out his time on the ship. He was personified in the movie by Stellan Skarsg̴rd (Dogville).

Then, Norrington (Jack Davenport), boatswain Gibbs (Kevin McNally) and many other minor characters can be named as familiar characters. But the feature of the film was the return of Geoffrey Rush, famously biting off his long-awaited piece of juicy apple.

Gore Verbinski’s clear emphasis on a series of fun and not very adventures of Captain Sparrow’s team; crazy screenplay by Elliott and Rossio; wild special effects recreating Davy Jones and his huge cuttlefish pet; the eccentric game of Johnny Depp and the entire acting group did their job – rushed to victory over the audience …

III. Leadership Battle:

Having entered the battlefield for the American box office, Pirates of the Caribbean 2 immediately took victory over such films as Superman Returns (Bryan Singer), The Devil Wears Prada (the threat, albeit a small one, was represented by Meryl Streep), Click : With remote control for life”, “Cars” (John Lassiter), “Supernacho” (long-suffering Jack Black) and others.

In general, the second part of the pirate fun around the world has collected neither more nor less – a billion,
second only to the unsinkable Titanic by James Cameron and the undivided steward of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King by Peter Jackson.

IV. Arrival:

The second part smoothly and calmly arrived at the temporary destination, for it was outlined to continue to surf the dangerous seas and lands – this time the returned cap Hector Barbossa, controlling the blind kittens Will and Elizabeth, will have, paradoxically, to bring Captain Jack Sparrow back to life …

“Dune” is a monumental film adaptation of the science fiction novel of the same name by Frank Herbert by Denis Villeneuve, with which the director finally and irrevocably inscribes his name in the history of world cinema. One gets the feeling that Villeneuve is not a person at all, but a magician who is able to cope with any material, no matter how difficult it is. It doesn’t matter if it is the sequel to Blade Runner or the transfer to the movie screens of the novel, which is considered unscreened because of its grandiose proportions. And although the first film in the cycle is an adaptation of exactly half of Herbert’s book, even that is enough to come to the obvious conclusion: Villeneuve’s Dune is a powerful canvas, full of volume, depth and insanely meticulous attention to even the smallest details.

Dune has only one cardinal problem, which Villeneuve himself understood perfectly well – the stories are too crowded within the framework of a 155-minute film. Therefore, the director did not try to cram a whole book into one two and a half hour tape. Villeneuve, being an ardent fan of the original, dreamed of creating a film adaptation worthy of the original source all his life, and therefore approached the source material with all the trepidation. Yes, in some places Villeneuve had to cut back on some peculiarities of the lore, somewhere not showing or not describing the everyday and cultural characteristics of peoples in such detail as it was in the novel. But all this does not spoil the overall impression of the tape, Villeneuve conveys the essence of the original very accurately. After all, literature and cinema are two completely different tools for telling stories, and therefore Villeneuve made his own film, not trying to transfer every line to the screen exactly, making changes to please the tempo and rhythm. But the love with which the director approached the film adaptation is amazing. It oozes from every frame, glitters on every grain of sand, reminding of itself even with scratches on the walls.

Villeneuve’s greatest strength as a director is editing. And the editing of “Dune” could be called one of the greatest in the history of big cinema, if it were not for the very problematic first act in this regard. Fortunately, Villeneuve does not repeat the mistakes of the 1984 film adaptation, which David Lynch reluctantly directed, starting the film not with titles floating on the screen, but with dynamic frame cuts, immersing the viewer immediately into the action. The plot of the picture rushes with such a wild speed that by no means all the events and characters a person unfamiliar with the novel can have time to understand and remember. Everything is cut very messy, one location is replaced by another, and the time frame is erased completely. This is where the tightness of the film is felt. Thank God, closer to the second act, the picture begins to breathe more confidently, and with it the viewer himself, while Villeneuve neatly, as if by the handle, leads him through the rich world of Frank Herbert.

It’s funny about Dune and the fact that it, in fact, lacks an ending on a global scale. Again, this is due to the impossibility of squeezing the book into one film. Therefore, Villeneuve focuses all the attention of the audience on the main character Paul (Timothy Chalamet) – this is exclusively his story, the whole plot revolves around him. Speaking purely academically, Dune is a movie about becoming a personality, about how a frightened boy gains voice, confidence and overcomes his fears of forced leadership. And like a painting about growing up, “Dune” works without sagging, there are no unnecessary questions to it. However, against the background of the story of the boy, Villeneuve unfolds a whole chain of events with many interesting and deep characters. In Dune, each, with rare exceptions in the person of a couple of heroes, a supporting character has its own complete storyline, not devoid of depth. Thanks to this, the world of “Dune” turned out to be really alive, it revolves not only around the main character, but exists apart from him. Therefore, Villeneuve leaves the most epic and large-scale events for the second part, which can be called a really correct decision. Better this way than some other way.

Suddenly, under the leadership of Villeneuve, even Timothy Chalamet began to act out a little more than two emotions. In most scenes, Chalamet, as usual, remains himself, but Villeneuve is almost the only director who managed to show the acting abilities of a young actor. And although Chalamet is clearly unable to compete with his colleagues, losing in acting terms to the excellent Oscar Isaac, the amazing Rebecca Ferguson in this film, the great Javier Bardem and the incomparable Stallan Skarsgard, he still does not get lost against their background, adequately saving his face. But Zendaya and Dave Batista are two gray spots of the tape, whose characters, although written quite well on paper, in fact do not represent anything special due to the expressionless acting.

In general, Dune lacked only one person in the team to become a world masterpiece – Roger Deakins. One word is enough to describe Greg Fraser’s camera work – “beauty”. Dune is a visually beautiful movie, but its footage lacks depth. Compositionally, everything is correct, the lighting work is done on a professional level, but, unlike Deakins, Fraser does not try to create something more than a beautiful wrapper. Deakins in Blade Runner 2049 could tell more about the characters’ inner conflicts with guiding lines alone than the characters themselves out loud. Fraser can’t do that. Villeneuve himself is more about editing than about visionary work, and therefore the director focused on which plan will be glued to which, which detail to connect with and how to make the transition between scenes more seamless. Villeneuve’s craving for editing is reflected in the sound design, which deserves separate awards and applause – the sound of the film is amazing.

Dune is a grand auteur cinema that leaves its viewer with trembling hands and feet in the final credits thanks to the greatness of Hans Zimmer’s music and the skill and exuberance of Villeneuve’s production. And the fundamental work of artists is striking in its scale throughout the entire duration. Denis Villeneuve worked on Dune not as a studio project, but as a dream movie. That is why the director is so furious and follows every splicing, every note and every detail in the environment. Dune is more than a movie. Dune is a work of art that can be called one of the most important events in world cinema in its decade in absentia. Now it is definitely impossible to imagine a director who could cope with the tasks set better than Denis Villeneuve.

“The world rests on four pillars. This is the knowledge of the wise, the justice of the strong, the prayers of the righteous and the valor of the brave. But all four are nothing without a ruler who knows the art of government. ”

Denis Villeneuve is not just a director, but a full-fledged artist, gracefully directing the work of the ‘brush’ over the radio.
