Scorsese has almost all of his movies about New York, and they hardly pass for promotional pamphlets. But while most of them are about the urks, the marginalized and the limitedly sane – and we can assume that it’s not about us, I mean not about them, but about the marginalized – the main characters of “After Work” are ordinary people after a difficult day, and the events take place not in Queens, not in Brooklyn, not in the Bronx even, but in bohemian Soho in Manhattan. Behind God’s back. Here you can’t say that the city is good, just that the neighborhood is not great. Scorsese, however, even though he writes his hometown, he seems to imply something broader. Wider, that is.

A programmer gets acquainted in a cafe with a girl who, like him, is fascinated by Miller’s tropics. In the evening he arranges a meeting and, anticipating a light flirtation, and then, who knows, maybe a full-fledged one, goes to visit her. The cab driver came with a bad luck, he drove like a bitten man, and the twenty dollars he had saved for the evening was blown away like a wind. Actually, it was blown away. Which turned out to be only the first in a series of strange, sometimes comical, but more often unpleasant incidents. To recount them is a thankless task for several pages in 14-point font, I will only note that he came to work in the morning still without a spear in his pocket, unwashed, unshaven, and, moreover, covered with a layer of plaster; he had not eaten, had not slept, and did not know the soon-to-be-named body.

And all it cost was to lose the money. Money – and don’t try to check – turned out to be the constant without which ties fall apart like a domino castle. He found himself unnecessary, superfluous, extraneous, alien – the friendly city had turned him away from neon grace for a long, long night.

He was saddened to learn that outside the usual context – worker, consumer, resident – he was nothing more than an exhibit at the absurdity fair. That suicide takes less time than a cup of coffee; that everyone is himself and everyone is against him; that to become relevant, one must instantly cut one’s Mohawk. Everyone has a story to tell, but not everyone will listen to it, and he, however, had no reason to marvel; in the morning he himself had missed the client’s outpourings, but now that half the neighborhood was after him, both on foot and with special equipment, he had to listen to the bad girl’s stories in order to keep his own skin safe.

The most notable maxim came from the two burglars who stole the sculpture. Are you sure it has value?” asks one. Well, of course – answers the other – it’s art, and it is the more valuable, the uglier. The mouth of the schnyfer dropped the truth. In an ugly dream – why shouldn’t an ugly fairy come with an ugly lullaby?

Story Movie
Two parallel stories are told. In the first, a group of research scientists from a variety of backgrounds are investigating the strange appearance of items in remote locations, primarily desert regions. In continuing their investigation, one of the lead scientists, a Frenchman named Claude Lacombe, incorporates the Kodly method of music education as a means of communication in their work. The response, in turn, at first baffles the researchers, until American cartographer David Laughlin deciphers the meaning of the response. In the second, electric company lineman and family man Roy Neary and single mother Jillian Guiler are among some individuals in Muncie, Indiana who experience some paranormal activity before some flashes of bright lights in the sky, which they believe to be a UFO. Roy becomes obsessed with what he saw, unlike some others, especially in some form of authority, who refuse to acknowledge their belief that it was a UFO in not wanting to appear crazy. Close Encounters of the Third Kind 4K Review
Steven Spielberg has made huge popcorn blockbusters that gross more money at the box office (i.e. “Jaws,” “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” or “Jurassic Park”) and are more exciting on a visceral level. As he as aged and matured as a director, he has also made movies that are more important and will hold a more solid place in the chronicles of film as an artistic document of history (i.e. “Schindler’s List,” “Saving Private Ryan,” and “Munich”). For my money, his best film will still always be “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” This film is Spielberg’s humanistic and heartfelt answer to Kubrick’s intellectual and cerebral look at man’s first contact with life from elsewhere in the universe in his 1968 opus “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

“Close Encounters” came early on in Spielberg’s career, made in 1977, and has all the hallmarks of his later films played just right before he became so self-referential. Here we have his typical bag of tricks long before they became so typical: familial strife, coming to terms with something bigger than oneself that challenges the male protagonist’s view of the world around him, little kids in jeopardy, superb build up of suspense, fantastic visual effects, and a memorable score from John Williams. From the first UFO sightings in Muncie, Indiana to the fantastic finale at Devil’s Tower in Wyoming, this is grand entertainment. Lots of films have emulated this movie to varying degrees of success, from Robert Zemeckis’ earnest “Contact,” to the shameful scam that was M. Night Shymalan’s “Signs,” and even Spielberg himself recently did the dark natured flip-side to benevolent alien encounters with his remake of “War of the Worlds” (which makes a fantastic double-feature with this). However, nothing compares to this true original. No other film has made me want to believe in aliens more, and I’ll never look at a plate of mashed potatoes the same again.
