Spooky legends run around the sinister mansion known as The House on the Hill. This gloomy and stately structure, once owned by the richest textile magnate Hugh Crane, has stood empty for more than a century and is considered a cursed place. But it is the place where Dr. Murrow, a specialist in sleep studies, chooses it for his experiments. A group of four people suffering from insomnia will have to spend several days and nights in the creepy house.

4k movies reviews
Probably my favorite horror movie. It’s a rare horror film that I can get so excited to watch it over and over again, each time with interest as the plot unfolds, its likable characters, the bizarre sets and the special effects stirring the imagination.

The basis, so to speak, the main element of the movie is the house itself, I would even say the whole castle, where very strange things happen. A beautifully decorated outside monumental building is even more beautiful inside: skillfully carved stone sculptures of different mythical creatures, which seem to be alive and hear every word you say; walls decorated with tapestries; marble floors; impressive big massive doors and columns, decorated with bas-reliefs and different patterns; luxurious inlaid furniture and many other things…

The interior is a bit gloomy, but of admirable beauty. An ideal place for all kinds of experiments. In a word, for a while you just forget everything and travel around the castle with the girls, enjoying its beauty. It seems to me that such a little departure, as they call it, from the theme to the picture, just contributes to a better perception of the film, brings some variety to it.

And in what other horror movie, but not in the ‘Ghost of the House’ you can see so many good talented actors at the same time! The inimitable Liam Neeson as Dr. Murrow (truth, it is far from his best role), Owen Wilson playing such a jolly simpleton… I really liked Lily Taylor. After this movie I started looking for movies with her participation. And, of course, the charming Catherine Zeta-Jones, who gives us warmth and joy with her smile. All the characters are very nice, causing sympathy. It is a pleasure to watch them.

Stunning special effects that take your breath away. Especially well done computer animation. Though it looks like mid-90’s, but it is in perfect harmony with the setting without breaking its special charm.

And as for the main theme of the movie, here you get the impression as if you watch not a modern mystic with a touch of scares, but a quality remake of some old, maybe even a black-and-white horror movie without losing its initial flavor.

The filming is superb, with no fuss and no shaky camera. On the contrary, excellent camerawork ideas: showing the characters as if ‘from the shoulders’, as if you were following them yourself. You get a sense of your own presence in the castle. This, undoubtedly, is a big plus. And you don’t feel much tension. It only comes up when you’re expecting it, rather than constantly having to keep your hand on the pulse.

I am by no means scolding contemporary horror films, but it seems to me that it makes no sense to compare this film to them – they are absolutely dissimilar. Maybe due to this dissimilarity, ‘Ghost of the House’ – as a good wine, does not get old and, even in spite of obviously outdated computer effects of the 90’s, looks every time with great pleasure.

I think many people will enjoy the movie. I watched it five times and now I want to watch it again.

Ann, a 25-year-old nun, believes her calling is to exorcise the devil, although only priests are allowed to perform the rite of exorcism. Despite prohibitions, she embarks on her mission, but soon comes face to face with terrifying demons.

4k movies reviews
If you’re looking for a suitable entry-level supernatural horror that checks most of the basic boxes of moodily lit, jumpscare laden catholic exorcism, this is a not too serious, not too scary PG-13 piece of work.

If, however, you are looking for something more technically mature, and you are at all familiar with the genre, you’re going to feel like you’ve seen all this somewhere before. Maybe even several somewheres. It’s still worth clutching a significant other and gasping at, but you may also find yourself chuckling at the wrong moments as this cast of half-hearted priests and nuns slog through a mostly by the numbers exorcism film where everything happens just like you expect it will and the plot doesn’t have to make too much sense.

Jacqueline Byers.gives a muted performance as a tortured young nun with a flawed history, providing the odd tear here and there, but staying mostly on an emotional baseline, despite the ostensibly fantastic events occurring around her. Christian Navarro compliments her performance with much of the same, although he seems somewhat more genuine at times. Colin Salmon definitely takes point with tried and true acting chops, although he’s relegated mostly to dialogue and exposition with little action.

Without spoilers, this movie borrows possession tropes from all the big exorcism movies, dishing them out almost predictably, the most creative of which you can see in the trailers.

The special FX are tame, and while the cinematography and lighting are solid most of the time, there are surprisingly odd flaws, like obvious drone shadows in the aerial shots, that really detract from the sense of being in a real theatre watching a major motion picture.

Plot wise, you can guess this all the way through, and don’t think too hard about things like how you can tell the difference between mental health issues and possession, how you can tell if an exorcism works or not, what exactly an exorcism requires or what the demon actually wants to accomplish by possessing someone. The movie doesn’t bother to explain any of it, but acts like it does. Characters do mind-numbingly foolish things, walk into all the dark hallways go forward when they should run away, and even experience some consequences for the actions, and yet the movie seems content to leave our leads cluelessly naive and dull at each new turn of events.

The moral/ethical subplots are muddy at best, making a case for women in traditionally male roles, then seemingly reinforcing why that doesn’t work. It also makes a convincing argument for traditional Catholicism, then snubs it’s nose at the same traditions as if unnecessary. Our heroes are mostly unsuccessful in their efforts, yet we are supposed to be on their team as they bumble through doing it their way against all better advice. In the end, I felt like the directory and his writers must have argued heavily over the religious and moral plot points, and compromised by not making any real statements or taking any sides, leaving a vacuum of blandly mixed signals that don’t commit to anything other than a veiled hint that we are responsible for freeing ourselves from our own demons, but only through a confusing blend of faith, psychology and a bullheaded willingness to disregard them both and do whatever we feel like.

It’s a bit of a confusing mess if you want meaning, but it delivers on some jumps, some possessed characters, some inexplicable electrical failures, shadow grabs, etc.

So don’t be afraid to take your boyfriend and squeal on occasion, but don’t expect any divine revelations. It’s less like a blessed chalice of holy water and more like a stale glass of tap water.

In the outer boroughs of Chicago, there is a legend of a mysterious maniac nicknamed Candyman, an inhabitant of a parallel world. He doesn’t need a knife to inflict wounds: his prosthetic hook-shaped hand is the perfect instrument of crime.

For now, Candyman is beyond reality. But if you stand in front of a mirror and say his name five times in a row, he will cross that shaky line. And then no one will be able to escape.

A group of young scientists, who do not believe in the mysterious Candyman, take on the task of studying this legend. But at any moment, instead of their reflection in the mirror, they may see the killer…

4k movies reviews
Candyman. I think I’ve… heard that name. He’s a killer. He revels in fear. With his hook embedded in the flesh of his severed right arm, he rips his victim’s belly open from groin to chest. And he disappears as if he never existed. Without a trace. Like a ghost. Maybe he really is a ghost.

At least he’s definitely not a man anymore. He’s over a hundred years old since he died. He died for loving. For tasting the sweetness of love. The sweetest thing on earth. The real sweetness, the white virgin whose beauty he was told to capture in a painting. Apparently, he should burn in hell for it. For love. And for his romance, he felt all the bitterness of the bees’ poison, wizards of sweet honey. Irony and sophisticated revenge. The blood became sweeter.

Candyman. I think I… saw his face. Tony Todd’s face. The wise pathologist from Destination, whose voice was Death himself. And here he’s still so young. And too human. For a mad killer, his eyes were too expressive and trusting. He gave the feeling not of a homicidal maniac without principles but with the philosophy of a madman, but of an elegant Phantom of the Opera. Something in his movements was high, exquisite. Like the death he dreamed of giving to his main victim.

It was enough to say his name five times in front of the mirror to see for yourself. It was like Russian roulette, where you got lucky four times. But the rules were ironclad, and the bullet still found its owner, though the owner was not at all aware that he would pull the trigger for the last time in his life. It took Bloody Mary three times to hear her suicide call. But here it’s much simpler and angrier. Perhaps our killer himself admits that his method of appearance is neither fresh nor original. In addition, he doesn’t leave his victims a chance. He doesn’t warn them over the phone. He is not picky about blacks, prostitutes, sleepers, teenagers, etc. You just call him up, he won’t leave anyone out. Except Helen.

Candyman. I think I … saw the place where he lived. An abandoned neighborhood. A forbidden place. A slum of spray-painted entryways and streets. A tall building with the most resilient, all African-American, left to live in. That’s a tough welcome. Racist. For obviousness. Clive Barker has never felt the urge to wise up his creations. He is as much a killer as his characters. The only difference is that he kills fictional characters. And his characters kill people who are already alive. He likes to play with fear by channeling it into disgust. In a direction that is littered with the blood and guts of living beings. It’s as if his mind has risen from hell, and his characters save his soul by expelling the dark energy into another dimension. A dimension of fantasy. He had long ago determined his priorities for himself and had learned to emphasize in his creations the line between story and action that he himself had once built.

First a legend to show us what to fear and what to expect from it. Then the silence. We are put to the test when characters already dear to us, who appear in the frame for more than one line, jump out from around corners or jump on the bed. And we like to shiver. We haven’t seen the killer yet, but we’ve enjoyed plenty of his art and the charlatans who pass themselves off as idols. Afterward, we’re finally happy to get a glimpse of Tony’s face standing in the parking lot. It’s very strange. We, after all, expected him to hide his face, to see only his shuffling feet and bloody hook to the last, although you can see him in the first few minutes for a split second if you press pause. But here he is, standing as if he were a man like the rest of us, with a lively look and a last century style of speech. He is just another character, the most vivid, and, unfortunately, the most uneven, though perhaps that’s what should give him away as a madman. And then we could have applauded the killer, but we will know that he just got lucky with the actor. And the fourth part of the macabre story is when, following several paths, we finally discover the knot. A prize for those who despise the exquisite blood of death, and a welcome addition to lovers of the horror genre from Clive Barker.

Candyman. I think I… saw his victims. Inexpressive actors. When he was getting ready to kill, he made sure to show himself to the victim. An ugly ghost. He admired Helen’s helplessness, chopping up everyone connected to her. And left her alone, alone with a corpse, in a pool of blood. She, the fool, always grabbed the fucking knife, thinking she’d protect herself from the ghost. But, like a cheap cliché, she was forever alone with the knife in her hands, and the gutted body lying next to her. The cops were too lazy to look into it, there was enough blood on the knife and fingerprints on the blade, and you can’t blame them for that. Helen, on the other hand, could be blamed. She got naked in front of the camera twice. You can feel sorry for her. Because the strings that hold her in our reality are rapidly being cut with a blunt hook, and blood is left on the edges. And at some point, when her sweet life threatens to turn its back on her and slam the door on her, the most terrifying and maddening thought is born that straps her to a hospital bed. After all, everything leads to the fact that the most real thing in her life remains a legend. Bravo, Clive. My first and only “Bravo!” to you. But my clap went into the silence and came back with a quiet shuddering echo.

The music was high. Not in the way you thought. The music was high-spirited. It was as if it laughed with a refined aristocratic chime and was utterly unwilling to give the viewer a racing heartbeat. No, it was often silent, but when it sounded, it raised the spirits. As if it cheered me up. And that was what made it not scary, but somehow sad. At once the world became gray. And the blood is dark. And the taste of honey is bitter. Like a kiss overflowing with buzzing bees. The crunch, the feeling of needles sticking into your tongue…

A most mesmerizing and beautiful offering. To be a victim. To feel the special pain. Strict and proud. To watch the world spread thousands of rumors of your death. To become an eternity and revel in blood and honey…

4k movies reviews
I must say right away, I think Lynch’s Dune is one of the best science fiction films of all time! Fell in love with ‘Dune’ from the first viewing many years ago and I watch it with pleasure to this day!

The film is very, hmm, VERY misunderstood in the year 1984 – when it actually came out. The audience, who first heard the name of Frank Herbert, muttered with displeasure at the pretentious decorations and an overly incomprehensible plot (just like right now, by the way!). Fans of Frank Herbert, in turn, grumbled unhappily that their favorite book, David, it turns out, badly mutilated …

And I’ll tell you what, disgruntled gentlemen! I read the book (yes, yes!) And declare: THERE WAS NO BEST SCREEN AND WILL NOT BE! Yes, the film is, to put it mildly, different from the book, yes, at the end of the film it is raining (‘Oh my God! How is that?’ – the book lovers clutch at their hearts). But the film only benefits from this, by God! The film is massive, epic, and visually rich and beautiful. The scenery and costumes are beyond praise! Special effects? Oh, there are many, by the way, grumble about special effects, but they were actually at their best for 1984!

It is known that David filmed this film under strict supervision of the producers, which he did not like very much. But, despite this, the film came out surprisingly verified, there is nothing superfluous in it, and the plot is understandable for anyone who knows how to turn on the brain while watching! Speaking of the ‘brain’: I have never seen a SMART, SOUL AND EMOTIONAL science fiction movie!

Acting is something that is difficult to find in our time! A separate word about Kyle McLachlan – eat me Shai-Hulud if someone looks more like Paul Atreides than Kyle!

And of course, without which ‘Dune’ would not have been ‘Dune’ – the unforgettable music of Toto! Ta-ta-tadA … ta-ta-tadaAA … ta-taa-tadAAA! Equally delightful, brilliant and catchy music, perhaps only in ‘Star Wars’ and in ‘The Godfather’!

Eh, it is a pity that many do not see and do not understand the beauty of this film. Not only is this an immortal classic, but I will never tire of repeating, ONE OF THE BEST FILMS IN HISTORY!

Joy is the story of the title character, who rose to become founder and matriarch of a powerful family business dynasty. Movie 4k.

Joy has always been fascinated by creating things, This pursuit was always supported emotionally by her maternal grandmother, Mimi. Joy feels that lack of practical support has led to others making fortunes on ideas she came up with years ago but could not act upon manufacturing. Despite being broke, Joy is the person in her extended family to whom everyone has always turned, in the process forgoing her own life, including not having attended college to help see her parents through their divorce. She works in an unsatisfying job as an Eastern Airlines ticket clerk; and lives with her mother Terry who spends all day in bed watching soap operas; her ex-husband Tony, a less than successful aspiring Latino Tom Jones wannabe; and their two children. Added to this mix is her father Rudy, the owner of a failing heavy-duty garage, which is managed by Joy’s older half-sister Peggy, with whom she has somewhat of a strained relationship, and for which Joy does the books. Joy (2015) 4K review
This film is not recommended.
The usually reliable David O. Russell lets down his fine cast of performers in his latest film, Joy, which doesn’t quite live up to its title. Except for a strong performance from its lead, the delightful Jennifer Lawrence, the film remains a major disappointment.

The film is loosely based on the true story of inventor Joy Mangano, but the screenplay also written by its director is a mess that needs to clean up its act. The film swings wildly between comedy and drama but never stays long enough to be effective in either category. Joy, winningly played by Ms. Lawrence, is interesting and the actress brings some verve to her role, but all of the supporting characters around her are sketchy and never amount to much more than quirky curmudgeons whose actions are so over-the-top that they never resemble anything remotely believable.

The plot: Joy’s life is in shambles (but then, so is the script). Living slightly above the poverty level and sharing her household with her dysfunctional divorced parents, Terry (Virginia Madsen), a reclusive soap opera addicted mother, and Rudy, a crotchety self-absorbed father (Robert De Niro) who takes up with a rich Italian widow named Trudy (Isabella Rossellini), Joy’s ex-husband, Tony (Edgar Ramirez), who is trying to be a professional singer, Peggy (Elizabeth Rohm), her jealous stepsister, and Joy’s two adorable children. Still her creative impulses compel her take action and change the direction her life is taking, which leads Joy to her long- time friend and adversary in business, Neil (Bradley Cooper), who gives her moral support on her latest venture.

However, none of these relationships build to any satisfactory conclusion due to the stilted writing and uneven tone of the film. The ending also seems pat and forced as it quickly tries to tie up its loose ends, be they cotton or synthetic.
With all of the talent involved, sadly, Joy is a joyless filmgoing experience.
