Scorched yellow earth… The endless, stretching to the horizon… A thin thread of road running into the distance… A sturdy old building enclosed by a stone fence, a dusty courtyard… In the courtyard, with its nose in the ground, leaning slightly sideways under its own weight, a huge, red, rusty aerial bomb is sticking out. It was dropped one terrible night. Nobody knows why it didn’t explode. But if you put your ear to its red-hot body, you can hear how it either taps or ticks or breathes. It’s alive… A living evil, lurking for the time being…

And there’s a war going on somewhere beyond that fence… That’s where the men have gone, leaving their sons in this godforsaken orphanage… From there comes the news of their dead parents, From there across the dusty road comes the occasional carload of unkind people or unfortunate news… There’s nothing good to look forward to… no food, no money, no attention to abandoned children…

Here, behind thick stone walls, in a former church building, the boys await their fate… Kids and teens from 5 to 15, and each of them still believes in the miracle that someday their parents will walk through the gates of this orphanage and take them home… and there will be peace… and there will be no war…

The boys are still boys… They fumble in the dust, pick slugs in the basement by the cool, inviting well, exchange pre-war comic books, study self-drawn pictures of naked girls, they fight and fight among themselves, test each other for lousiness, to see who is capable of meanness and treachery and who is made of strong dough… …and dare the newcomers to go on dangerous night raids…

And yet they’re all afraid… Afraid of one of the adults who looks after them, afraid of the strange semi-criminal personalities who come periodically to their gates… But most of all, the boys are afraid of the one who sighs… Because it is almost impossible to see him, but his presence is always palpable – wet footprints appear on the floor, you can see a shadow running along the wall, huge scissors hanging on hooks in the kitchen move by themselves, water jars break in the bedroom… And the adult educators don’t believe that HE exists… He is real. And he’s a ghost… Is he dangerous? Or is he himself the victim of someone else’s evil?

What tragedy made him stay here without flying to heaven? What pain did he endure as a living man? HOW did he become a ghost? What feelings does the Ghost experience, if he is capable of experiencing anything? How is it that he appears to the boys as a fuzzy picture, blurry and instantly disappearing? What does he want…? Revenge? Justice? Punishment? So many questions overwhelm the inquisitive boys, some of whom know a little more than the others, but keep silent for fear of being killed… And others, inquisitive and fearless, unearth and connect the scraps of one terrible night… Mystery ceases to be mystery… Evil ceases to be contained…

Evil spread across the orphanage yard, overflowing the heart of one who craves riches… Greed has swallowed up humanity… Masks are cast off, the wolf’s mouth is gnawed… Brutality bursts forth… Rage is unleashed on those around them… And war begins. A war of our own. Not one that involves planes and bombs, but one that is confined to the stone fence of the yard… Shots are heard, and innocent blood stains the blade of the knife, and gasoline canisters explode… A huge column of black smoke rising to the sky… and little burnt corpses in the dust of the courtyard where, 24 hours ago, the boys were playing peacefully… And the sharp shards of glass that had embedded themselves in tender children’s backs… And the twisted legs… and the blood pulsing from an open artery… and glassy eyes staring back from whence they never return…

And what about the adults? Those who were supposed to save children’s lives? The adults were incapable of protecting the children from the horror. The head of the orphanage, an iron lady with a steel leg, thinks about rebels and gold, she cannot make sense of her feelings, overwhelmed by passions and desires…

The old teacher is too old, though he stands to the end with a rifle in his hand… and does his best… But he’s not strong enough against a young, swollen rage… And neither poems that he knows by heart, nor hundreds of books that he has read in his life, nor creepy embryos with a backbone of the devil – sharpened, as in dragons, vertebrae, poured with a special solution in his laboratory, will help him… They say that if you drink that solution from the bottle, the infirm will gain strength and many diseases will go away…

The Devil’s Backbone… According to legend, such a backbone occurs in children who are unwanted by their parents. Such children are not initially given the amount of love needed to become a normal person… If you think about it, maybe a lot of people should have such a spine… And so would the main villain, yet his back is straight and beautiful. Outwardly he is built like a god, this prince without a kingdom, and only in the greedy gleam of his cold eyes can you see the devil himself…

As it seems to me, the backbone of the devil is ugliness, which is revealed sometimes not in a man’s appearance, but in his actions, terrible and inexplicable in their cruelty…

The surviving boys… What did they come out of that battle with? Would their hearts harden after their hands were held by sharpened wooden stakes? Would their souls grow the same devilish chains? Would they be able to remain human?

They walked out the gate of the ruined orphanage, leaving behind them the corpses of their friends, the memory of the ghost, and the memory of the one who had sought the gold… In front of them a dusty road, running away to the horizon through the scorched steppe… What will the great land greet them with? What will they breathe in with the red-hot wind of a warring homeland? Who knows?…

And that huge aerial bomb was still ticking away in the yard of the orphanage. Evil under the scorching sun… Evil lurking for the time being…

Observation, observation, observation and observation again! It is this that does amazing things. You look into a person and read him like an open book. Two and a half hours of Guillermo del Toro keeps the audience’s attention on an organic crime drama with thriller elements. Two and a half hours in a timeline that can both frighten and scare away. Will you sit through it? Won’t you tire yourself out? Can you handle it? There will be no disappointments. Definitely. The story told from the screen has a solid script, the characters are endowed with characters and memorable faces, the acting is of the highest standard. The film, like a river, flows and flows from a small to a full-flowing whirlpool. And the subject matter, in general, is quite intriguing, mesmerizing. Backstage fakirs. Backstage magicians. The truth, as it were. The pink glasses of confidence the director removes from all of us here overnight. We are in the kitchen of the Magicians. We are in the kitchen of Wizards.

Always drifting from place to place. Stan Carlyle (Bradley Cooper) accidentally sticks to the ‘booth. And stays. And settles in little by little. Looking around, learning this and that. From sixes to aces he makes his way. Feelings, love fuel the lyricism of the male-female relationship in this strip. The self-interest, guile, and cunning sprout the characters of Willem Defoe, Cate Blanchett. From poverty to riches the path before us. A dream in incarnation. But flirting with the beyond has never done anyone any good. To get carried away is to lose one’s sense of reality.

The harmonious orchestra of actors’ instruments does not allow you to single out anyone in particular. Everyone is good. And the lead voices and even the backstage. You can feel it, you can feel the hand, the master’s head, attached to the picture. The dialogues are not empty, they are full of voices. The trill of one hundred and fifty minutes is a stuck composition. One returns to it with his thoughts again and again. Psychics – no good…

It is a nice, entertaining movie. And there’s even a moral at the end.

Perhaps it’s worth starting with the fact that quite a lot of films in Russia are not translated as they should, but how God puts them into their hearts or for a beautiful cover. Guillermo del Toro, a talented director and screenwriter, did not escape this fate. Starting with his “Imitators” / “Mimic” (which cunning translators designated as “Mutants”), ending with “Imp” / “Hellboy” (which at best remained Hellboy, and in the worst he was a hero from hell or (please do not laugh hard) – Super Pepper (I met once and such an instance)).

And then the question arose whether the “Labyrinth of Faun was so designated or whether there was a more correct version of the “Labyrinth of Pan. Of course, I could be wrong, but in that case it would explain a lot to those who did not understand or did not want to understand the plot of this movie. For reference purposes, for those who do not know Pan – the ancient Greek god of shepherding and cattle breeding, fertility and wildlife. Also, Pan had the opportunity to transform into almost everything that exists in the world (even into the constellation Capricorn). I apologize to those who are tired, I am already completing the introductory excursion.

According to the film. A lot of positive reviews and not for nothing. Much has been said good and not in vain. Acting game, make-up, musical accompaniment, camera work, script, directing deserve special praise.

The director very skillfully combined the historical aspect with the invention, in my opinion of dark fantasy. The brutality of the Second World War to the place, although shocking. The fanatic captain and snickering bourgeois, guzzling from the belly and discussing at that time how kind they are by giving miserable rations for coupons to the ordinary population are much more shocking than someone’s torn mouth.

An unusual mixture of styles, strong naturalistic moments and excellent directorial work personally left me only favorable impressions.

A small minus is the stupidity of partisans and a woman named Mercedes.

Since I became interested in the work of Guillermo Del Toro, I just had to try again to see Hellboy. The first attempt in the past failed. This is due to the fact that Rasputin appears in the film (the imperial monk is pitching) and the protagonist himself is funny, after that the film didn’t want to be watched than the first viewing actually ended, with associations about Anastasia (cartoon), where Rasputin also gloated.

Now, having learned better Del Toro and his style, it was necessary to overpower himself and overpower the film, maybe the thought is here, and most importantly the finale will be performed according to Guillermo, it turned out that it was not easy to persuade the producers in 2004, maybe in the sequel. Although the film cannot be called a successful one, apparently the producers were in vain trying to stop being realized in Guillermo’s Hellboy. 66 million eternally green for Guillermo has a huge budget, one of these will not be able to, therefore, he finished the picture according to the commercial plan of cunning … smart producers, this, of course, was not the Labyrinth of Faun, where he made a masterpiece for pennies compared to Hellboy.

This time the child’s character appears on the screen, a 9-year-old boy talking on equal terms with Hellboy and even giving him advice, the scene is really (as already noted in the open spaces of KinoPoisk) curious, funny. The pebble thrown by Hellboy into the head of a young FBI agent hits the target, like Guillermo at some point, tightening and braking the tape with this scene, decorated the movie. During the first viewing, I didn’t get to this episode, during the second (and if for all the same the first one) I laughed.

On the other hand, much of the film can be distinguished from the positive side, except for the picture and design of the “superheroes themselves, of course, Superman in shorts stretched over tights, as one loser says, is far from Hellboy, but he, like Batman and the hell, how many comic creatures this is not required. Here, draw the authors of the Hellboy movie from the “fire used in The Lord of the Rings, I would be satisfied, and as a result of hell it seems, like not from hell at all.

I would also doubt the stylishness of the first scene of the film (meeting the allies with the Nazis), on the one hand it’s gloomy like that of Barton and you won’t say that it’s cheap like in Faun, but on the other hand it’s weak to show interest in the film, and what is the appearance of Rasputin? The fantasy of the authors of the comic was not enough to create another evil character, even worse is the statement about the death of Hitler in the 57th year, the bastard survived Stalin himself. Well, while watching the movie this time, I tried to close my eyes at such a glaring disgrace, even the “design of the hero, if you look closely, can delight you, the sawn horns are original. But Rasputin does not give rest, they would have thought of a different character, it would be better, even Russian, even Dvaputin, Triputin, even a Russian actor in the role of a villain …

In general, for the style of the Hellboy movie comic strip, there are not enough a couple of more or less significant reasons like the twisted Marv or the Yellow Bastard. “Hellboy is not only inferior in gloom to “Sin City, but “V also means Vendetta and “Batman, to be honest, the fact that this gloom is here pleases me, unlike the snotty adventures of an arthropod or Superman.

I can bring another work of Guillermo Del Toro into my asset, and Chronos and Faun and the Devil’s Ridge, even if they don’t really like me, delight me only good impressions, I can’t say good ones because the films are not those (as a result of which they continue to delight until now). But Hellboy does not claim this title, the reasons are ridiculously banal:
-commercial orientation, and there is a cash potential (because of humor at least), why I didn’t succeed at the box office I don’t know;
– the main character nominated for the title “Hero (and they like this overseas, perhaps the American viewer simply didn’t see it, here it’s not so obvious as in Spider, he couldn’t even turn into a bad one, loser) .

And if the producers pushed their idea to turn Hellboy into a person at times (well, like a certain Hulk or a Ghost Rider), then it would be possible to throw a movie into the scrap, and there is hope that the hero is the same as he is and will not change. And why did the fiend of hell begin to work for the FBI well, that is, on the bright side of the force, that is, “for ours, that is, for the good? Yes, because he was brought up by a good man, a lonely professor, he did not spoil, did not create Spartan conditions, showed where good is and what is good. How in such conditions can a maniac killer with a bald head grow up?

An interesting instance of the thin genre of film comics, the fan of which (the genre), I hope, will never be.
Perlman always needs to work with Del Toro, who’s in Chronos, where he is at his best, and the character created by him burns with fire, even when without special effects, learn Nick Cage.

I looked twice, with a difference of 24 hours. I can say that the impressions have not changed. Therefore, I will not even comment on anything especially – in my opinion, this is one of the best fantasy films ever filmed.

Unlike the first part, which pretended to be mystical parody kinokomiksom, the second – this is a real fantasy steampunk with demons, elves, trolls, ogres, goblins and the undead, and an abundance of adult, sometimes black, but not vulgar humor. Beginning with the battle with the sweetest tooth fairies and ending with the final duel on the blades and the battle with the mechanical creatures, the picture fascinates with its stylistic courage and the perfect combination of action, comedy and drama. And although the number of main protagonists has increased, embodying the four elements, unique creatures invented by the authors’ imagination can be described for ages – or better yet, just see them! The soundtrack of Danny Elfman, cameraman and directorial work of the two Guillermo – Del Toro and Navarro, the charming Salma Blair, the flashing charisma of Ron Perlman and the new mysterious image of Luke Goss in the aggregate literally amazed my imagination.

In this film for me, as a not very demanding viewer, there are no flaws, Del Toro surpassed his own creation, again approaching the laurels of Hollywood’s main visionaries, Jackson, Burton and Gilliam.

Moreover, the second “Hellboy” in terms of entertainment and interestingness can compete with his own “Labyrinth of Faun”. This is the very rare case when it would seem that another blockbuster was ideal for someone. Be sure to revise this genre masterpiece, and perhaps antiquity Van Helsing will have to give way to this harsh guy, Red, but so good!

The Shape of Water 4K Review
Never really been a watcher of Guillermo del Toro movies, yet being a lover and liking movies that blend sci-fi and pay homage to classic monsters, I for sure had to check out this latest epic called “The Shape of Water”. And this movie is a touching and moving film that’s a blend of drama, romance, and adventure fantasy.

Set in the late 1950’s early 1960’s in Baltimore at a top notch government research lab this movie becomes a journey of escape and a journey of connection for two people who couldn’t be more different. Sally Hawkins is Elisa a lonely and mute janitor who’s only friends are her co worker Zelda(in a blunt and brash performance from Octavia Spencer)and her neighbor Giles(a wonderful Richard Jenkins). Plus Elisa puts up with verbal and mental abuse from her cold and mean boss Richard(the in grove Michael Shannon). However being alert and noticing things behind the scenes with eyes and ears pays off for Elisa.

Elisa slowly but surely begins a relationship of love and intimacy with a strange and mysterious sea like creature(something similar to the “Creature from the Black Lagoon”). And aside from this the film becomes a drama of twists and turns a need for escape and survival and you ask questions who can and who do you trust?

Overall this movie is a great escape of connection and a journey to love and belonging proving that happiness is possible for lonely and different types of people. “The Shape of Water” is clearly one journey that’s sentimental, emotional, and heart touching as the film will leave you touched and moved with love and wanting peace for all.

When monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes – a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) – who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Pacific Rim 4K Review
Unlike some, I had no problem with the high concept of the piece: Transformers vs Godzilla. It had a lot of potential. And when the movie concentrates on what we are all here to see (giant creatures and robots beating on each others with oil tankers and smashing through skyscrapers) it is very successful. But when things get quiet… less so. Too much time spent on “Top Gun” like fighter pilot shenanigans. Not enough nuance in the characterizations. An ultra linear plot with few attempts to confound expectations. The acting isn’t bad – and isn’t required to be great in this sort of film – but it is nothing special either. Sort of universally “meh”. Good for a Blu Ray rental.
