Scorsese has almost all of his movies about New York, and they hardly pass for promotional pamphlets. But while most of them are about the urks, the marginalized and the limitedly sane – and we can assume that it’s not about us, I mean not about them, but about the marginalized – the main characters of “After Work” are ordinary people after a difficult day, and the events take place not in Queens, not in Brooklyn, not in the Bronx even, but in bohemian Soho in Manhattan. Behind God’s back. Here you can’t say that the city is good, just that the neighborhood is not great. Scorsese, however, even though he writes his hometown, he seems to imply something broader. Wider, that is.

A programmer gets acquainted in a cafe with a girl who, like him, is fascinated by Miller’s tropics. In the evening he arranges a meeting and, anticipating a light flirtation, and then, who knows, maybe a full-fledged one, goes to visit her. The cab driver came with a bad luck, he drove like a bitten man, and the twenty dollars he had saved for the evening was blown away like a wind. Actually, it was blown away. Which turned out to be only the first in a series of strange, sometimes comical, but more often unpleasant incidents. To recount them is a thankless task for several pages in 14-point font, I will only note that he came to work in the morning still without a spear in his pocket, unwashed, unshaven, and, moreover, covered with a layer of plaster; he had not eaten, had not slept, and did not know the soon-to-be-named body.

And all it cost was to lose the money. Money – and don’t try to check – turned out to be the constant without which ties fall apart like a domino castle. He found himself unnecessary, superfluous, extraneous, alien – the friendly city had turned him away from neon grace for a long, long night.

He was saddened to learn that outside the usual context – worker, consumer, resident – he was nothing more than an exhibit at the absurdity fair. That suicide takes less time than a cup of coffee; that everyone is himself and everyone is against him; that to become relevant, one must instantly cut one’s Mohawk. Everyone has a story to tell, but not everyone will listen to it, and he, however, had no reason to marvel; in the morning he himself had missed the client’s outpourings, but now that half the neighborhood was after him, both on foot and with special equipment, he had to listen to the bad girl’s stories in order to keep his own skin safe.

Who would have thought that Martin Scorsese is not immune to sentimentalism. But that’s not a bad thing… It’s masterful. It’s magical. The movie ‘Hugo’ is the fulfillment of a childhood dream of a kid named Marty who looks at the world through the lens of a camera.

Once upon a time, there was a boy named Hugo Cabret. He had a father, but he died suddenly. And Hugo was lonely, until the mystery of his parent opened the way forward…. This is how the viewer discovers the forgotten Neverland in France. The beginning of the movie is rather pessimistic: an orphan boy, a cruel Inspector of the station, a cold and sullen owner of a magic shop. But as in all fairy tales everything is interconnected. A riddle leads to a search, a search leads to adventure, adventure leads to answers and the answers give everything. By ‘everything’ there is goodness, sadness, love and of course the dreams you live for. I can write so long, because it is impossible to adequately characterize what Scorsese shot. Therefore, I will analyze the creators of this creation.

Martin Scorsese in this movie is strangely similar to Tim Burton and Robert Zemeckis. But if the first began to exploit Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp (he is the producer of ‘Hugo’), and the second made a bump the size of Everest because of motion capture, the Italian-American director took the best from them. You will probably twist your finger, but the director took a lot from Chris Nolan’s Prestige and Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris. I compared The Prestige and Hugo because both movies are about cinematography, about visual deception, where the trick and its secret is more important than the truth. For Scorsese this was very important (the director can even be seen in the movie in a cameo role as a photographer). And ‘Midnight in Paris’ was remembered because of the Paris of the 40s itself (in ‘Hugo’ it is a truly magical and beautiful city). Martin showed himself not as the successor of Hitchcock or Francis Ford Coppola, but as the successor of a slightly grown up Peter Pan and it looks very cool!

And now the cast… Chloë Grace Moretz is habitually masterful. Asa Butterfield is not only not annoying, but pleasantly surprised by the sincerity, purity and openness of her character. But for some reason, Hugo is a bit like Frodo from Lord of the Rings. There’s also some nice childlike chemistry between these characters that shines through. Ben Kingsley played, in a way, Scorsese himself. A magician who has lost faith in the wonders of cinema and is stuck in a cage of darkness and realism (and the current movie industry is just filled with ‘darker, more realistic’ movies) suddenly rediscovers the path to magic and childhood. Beautifully acted. Sacha Baron Cohen played a kind of Carabas Barabas with a humanity trapped but waiting to break free. A typical fairy tale villain. Jude Law appears rarely little, although the role of a kind, sweet and sympathetic (it is for girls) father succeeded. Richard Griffiths (Vernon Dursle from ‘Potter’) and the ‘Great and Good’ Christopher Lee (you’ll see why ‘good’) make a welcome appearance.

Howard Shore’s music is very kind and sweet. Even John Williams would envy such a cacophony of sounds.

In terms of sets and special effects, you can see where the 170 million dollars went. Everything is done at the highest level. And Robert Richardson’s camerawork turns it all into an extraordinary visual.

This really is Marty’s ‘The Prestige’, where it’s not the brutal and unpleasant truth of the stunt that matters, but the stunt itself that brings magic to reality. Dreams, dreams, dreams…. The world is dull without them. Bring a little miracle to reality by watching this movie.

Scorsese – De Niro (or vice versa), one of the most fruitful tandems of world cinema. Together they have made more than one great film, be it Goodfellas, The King of Comedy, Cape Fear, etc. Also, the guys have two masterpieces, one of which, “Taxi Driver,” which is my favorite movie. And the other masterpiece is, of course, Raging Bull.

I have been a fan of Scorsese and De Niro for a long time, but I must admit that until recently, I never got to see this film. And I think it’s even for the best, because if I had seen it a couple of years ago I probably wouldn’t have been able to appreciate all the advantages of this picture. So my viewing took place just when I needed it, just when I was ready to see something like this. I must say that, in spite of the fact that the film is old (1980), it is not a day old, just like “Taxi Driver” and other ageless masterpieces, but on the contrary, it looks much more impressive than the trash they show in movies now. The picture itself is filmed in an innovative, incredibly effective (especially the fight scenes), and the inner drama of the main character was and will always be interesting. So we can safely say that the film has withstood the most important thing, the test of time.

The story is based on the real life fighter Jake La Motte. In order to give a historical emphasis, the director created a very interesting manner of stylization of the picture. On the one hand a black and white aesthetic look at history without blackness, without snot, without pathos. On the other hand, an innovatively filmed and powerfully edited film with the addition of newsreels and real photographs (the first battle scene). And the story itself covers the most important moments of life, each of the episodes, which begins with the credits date and place of specific events, which gives the film, almost a documentary-chronological subtext. Naturally and the story is told, without any pity for the audience.

A very brutal and harsh story of a man who is satisfied solely by committing an act of destruction (“hit me”). The story of a fighter who, with all his potential, could have become a god of the boxing world, but because of his controversial nature he is remembered as a fighter with potential but no brains. He had brains, but instead of boxing he was thinking about “who’s fucking my wife”. So the fighter’s life went from beating to beating, with the eternal self-assertion in front of his family, instead of self-expression in the ring. Though he was in the ring too, but the main thing was not to win, but to feel invincible and not to care who had the title, “I didn’t fall down and that’s it”.

Naturally, such a man simply could not finish well. Subsequently, his relatives and wife left him, and even his friends went somewhere, so there was no place to get 10,000 dollars. And this is where the hero becomes pathetic (“why me”), but he buried himself, he poured his life and his undeniable gift from God down the toilet, instead of using it, only destroying himself with it. I think that’s what interested Scorsese, the theme of the inner destruction of one’s self instead of creation. The story is very honest and frank, so that La Motta himself, after watching it, looked at himself and his life with different eyes, so sincere was the film.

The actors were just amazing. Of course, after Travis Bickle, the best role of all time, for me, De Niro plays a reference. This is truly a genius actor. For this role, he put on 27 pounds of live weight, although of course now it’s no surprise, if even for the second-rate comedy are the sacrifices, and after receiving the Oscars, but the difference is that De Niro was the first who decided to do this. But it’s not about weight, he can be pumped up and dumped and pumped up again. The point is that he is La Motta, the family tyrant and autocrat (“I know, I’m the BOSS here”), and he’s also a rabid beech in the ring. By the way, in the opening scene of the fight with his first wife, De Niro starts a verbal altercation with his neighbor. Surprisingly, this was not in the script, and the neighbor simply did not know that the shooting was going on and did not recognize De Niro, but De Niro is not confused:

– What kind of animals live there?

– Did that son of a bitch call me an animal? …Hey, you, I’ll take your dog and eat him for lunch, did you hear Larry?

I improvised brilliantly.

I’d also like to say that Joe Pesci was a joy to watch. The role of his brother Joey suits him just fine, every episode with him is incomparable, well, their dialogues with De Niro want to review several times. It’s a shame he didn’t win anything for his role, well at least the academy awarded him for “Goodfellas”, he more than deserves it. And of course we want to mention the excellent acting of Cathy Moriarty as Vicki. Essentially a stereotypical character, but ultimately revealing herself completely.

November 26, 1976, Thanksgiving Day, Winterland Concert Hall, San Francisco. On that night, the then-young director Martin Scorsese captured on film the final concert of the farewell tour of the legendary Canadian-American band The Band.

Formerly the accompaniment band of Ronnie Hawkins and Bob Dylan, members of the famous Woodstock, whose first albums became the ‘platinum fund’ of rock music in the late ’60s, were and still are arguably the most rootsy ensemble of North American popular music. The multi-instrumentalists who easily fused folk, blues, country, rock, ragtime and soul in their music, they always remained themselves, not chasing the fashionable musical trends of their contemporaries, like psychedelic rock, and managing to win the respect of both the hippie audience of those times and the critics who were always ‘sharp on the pen’.

For Scorsese this film was far from his first experience of work in the musical cinema, once, with his constant companion Thelma Schoonmaker, he worked on editing a documentary about the Woodstock festival.

The Last Waltz is structured according to the classic scheme of concert documentaries: a musical number – a blitz-interview with a band member. In this way the viewer is presented not just as a talented performer, but as a lively man with an individual organism. The director himself also appears in the frame, asking questions to his involuntary ‘actors’.

In addition to performing their own ‘netlenoks’, The Band interpret the songs of their ‘brothers on the guitar fingerboard’, and the authors themselves help them in this, taking to the stage one after another. And among them, we must say, genius upon geniuses, legend upon legend: Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Neil Diamond, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton (who once, after hearing the debut album of The Band, decided by all means to become a member of the band), the great Muddy Waters and even Bob Dylan himself! That’s not counting many others, like Ringo Starr or the beat poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti.

The camera captures exclusively the musicians on stage, glancing carelessly through the crowd in the auditorium only once or twice during the two hours of screen time. Scorsese also dilutes the concert with stand-up numbers performed in the pavilion, among which turns out to be the band’s biggest hit, the ‘biblical’ ballad ‘The Weight’. With these proto-clip inserts, the director absolutely emphasized a certain acoustic chamberness peculiar to all of The Band’s work.

For perspective, as it turns out, this film was not only the last major documentary of the ‘golden era of rock,’ but also a ‘swan denunciation’ of the entire ‘flower power’ era. ‘The melodies of the American South met the crystal air of Canadian lakes, the mandolin, fiddle, accordion and double bass became rock instruments, and backstage Mark Twain looms with a harmonica.

Do you know why this movie was in the top anticipated around the world? Of course, a great bunch, a crazy deuce, a mind-blowing duet is back in business. They reunited in order to once again show how to do ‘this’, how to shoot a quality movie, leaving no questions from the viewer. Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio is a poster that makes you go to the cinema without further ado, because after Isle of the Damned, Aviator, The Departed and Gangs of New York, can you really want to bypass their new creation?

The Wolf of Wall Street is the life story of a criminal whose ambition forces him to plunge into a dirty world ruled by sex, drugs, endless lies and endless debauchery. This story is about ‘white collars’, about people who wear expensive suits and work in their respective offices, but in terms of the development and pace of what is happening, the film will give odds to any gangster story on the shores of the Sicilian island.

We are told about the life of Jordan Belfort, a broker who made a fortune from money laundering and financial fraud, a man who knows how to play high and live to the fullest. Our attention is focused on the ascent to power, on the overwhelming success that blows away the roof of the protagonist. The film is replete with filth, luxury in everything, obsession with material things and characters who want nothing but satisfy their own needs. Sometimes it was difficult to believe that in our licentiousness it was possible to go so far, but in the pursuit of success and money, we observe the fall of the human personality.

Perhaps the most memorable thing about Wall Street was Leonardo DiCaprio’s acting. Everyone is probably already used to the fact that Leo approaches every role with a great deal of responsibility, but here he surpassed himself. He literally felt every note of Belfort’s soul, in all his statements, movements, intonations, there was a complete fusion with the image, an exact hit in the ‘bull’s-eye’. Give him an Oscar, film academics, where is it better?

Despite the timing of the picture, it captures from the first shots and does not let go until the last, no matter how trite and hackneyed it sounds. One gets the impression that one could easily sit out for the next three hours. Scorsese shot many scenes with style, dynamism and fun, causing laughter in the cinema hall, creating a feeling of lightness, airiness. Another director’s masterpiece, this man made ‘candy’ from black comedy. The musical accompaniment is chosen as best as possible, for this it is also bold + in the piggy bank of the creators of the action.

In summary, ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ will be nominated for ‘Best Film of the Year’. Martin will be nominated for ‘Best Director of the Year’. And as a prediction, Leo will take the gold statuette for ‘Best Actor of the Year’.

Lonely and not needed by anyone, and all attempts to make acquaintance with someone end in failure. He looks like an ordinary person, but the drops are deeper, we will see a person with a crippled soul. And as the hero of Al Pacino said in ‘The Smell of a Woman’: ‘You cannot replace the soul with a prosthesis.’ How can such a person live? Why should he live? He is trying to survive in the city and in a world in which everyone goes their own way, and this is normal, but not for him. He sees no point in this vanity, in senseless attempts to assert himself in life. He finds work to occupy himself and get rid of insomnia, but this only aggravated his worries.

‘I work twelve hours a day and still can’t sleep. Insomnia.’

Despite the fact that basically all Scorsese’s paintings are beautiful with their dialogues, there are not so many sayings in Taxi Driver, but every thought from Travis’s lips penetrates directly into the soul. In addition, each frame carries a meaning, and all that remains is to think out. You can talk for a long time about how Robert De Niro plays, here his hero, again, is not like the others. And it seems like the famous facial expressions and grin of Robert shines in every film, but all the same, except for facial expressions, the actor puts a different state of mind in each role. I’m talking about the fact that Robert does not just enter the image, or even play, no, he gets used to each of his characters.

‘Don’t think too much’ – a colleague taxi driver advised him, but is it easy to give up your thoughts and get back on your feet when there is fog around you.

Taxi driver Travis, with a lost look, immediately causes anxiety, but let’s imagine if he was a real person whom you would meet in life. Would you talk to him and even more so trust anything? Most likely no. Travis is not like everyone else, yes, he works like everyone else, has fun like everyone else, but he is alone, and it kills him from the inside. He tries to speak, but they do not understand him, and most likely they do not even listen, he tries to listen, and does not understand what he is doing here and who these people are, what is next to him.

“There’s no choice anyway, we’ll all get fucked someday.”

He tries to join life, to other people, although he knows that he is not at all close to them. Travis is critical, and no one shares his position either, because he looks at his surroundings with different eyes. Probably even a child is clear that there is little justice in the world, and it is difficult to change anything, this is understandable to everyone except Travis, a person who lost himself and left his soul somewhere in the past, and lagged behind the whole world for many years.

“I don’t understand myself.”

All problems are alone. When he meets Betsy, it seems that confidence and hope comes to him. He invites her to a cafe, starts a fascinating conversation, and interests the girl. But their state of mind is completely different. Betty turned out to be the same for him as everyone else, fixated on her work, a pitiful girl who can not appreciate anything but appreciate. And he was disgusting to her, and terrible. And all attempts to return the girl were in vain, and Travis was finally disappointed in the people around him.

‘I want to do something, something meaningful.’

And after that, Travis began to withdraw more and more into himself, building up dark thoughts in his head. The dirt that the taxi driver sees from the windows of his car gets into his mind, the idea of ​​revenge and retribution becomes obsessive. Shooting in the film is brilliant and heartfelt. Scorsese was great even then, how he feels the actors, and how he expresses meaning, if not through dialogue, then through the frame. Travis’ emotions and feelings are understandable without words.

A man pushes Travis to change (he was played by Martin Scorsese himself), who got into his car, and explained how people go to the next world, and that he is going to kill a negro, with whom his wife is cheating. I must say, in ‘Taxi Driver’, as in many of Scorsese’s films, there are some shades of racism, but they do not come from the director, but from the streets that carry racial hatred. Negroes, Jews, Irish and Italians – all have their own mentality and characteristics, all have their own sins and cockroaches. But most of America consists of them, the America that Martin reveals in his paintings.

‘Listen, you bastards and scum, there is a man who is tired of all this, and who is not going to endure it all anymore. Listen, you assholes and scum, there is a man who will rise up against all this shit, against all this filth, abomination. There was a man …. You are a dead man. ‘

I will not focus on the heroine, the then young Jodie Foster, who played Travis’s muse, because they wrote about her in sufficient detail. I want to write about the very act of the taxi driver. What could he change globally? The answer is nothing. However, even the help of one girl seemed to him a way out of the situation. Send scoundrels to the next world and, if you’re lucky, survive on your own. He lost his mind, but a healthy person would not have gone to such a thing. Travis went against everyone else, and he punished these bastards.

After that, his life changed, they wrote about him in the newspaper, Betty again showed interest in him, and most importantly, he freed the girl from dirt, for which her parents were grateful to him. But, could he finally get rid of his thoughts and loneliness? No, Travis was doomed. The reflection in the mirror of a lonely taxi driver is unlikely to ever change, and he will still see this dirt. It’s just that apparently there are people who look at life simply, do not really think about what is happening, and do not notice the vices of people – perhaps they are lucky, and it is easy for them in life. And there are those who cannot live when they see the suffering of another person, he cannot simply swallow it.

‘Someday there will be a knock on your door, and it will be me’ – Travis, in a letter to his parents.

Martin Scorsese’s painting is definitely not for everyone, not everyone can learn and feel it. And since then the world has become even more overgrown with various ‘dirt’, that now the worldview of a lonely taxi driver will seem to many a prejudice. Well, in vain … After all, he will simply stare at you, with a smile, but at the same time, think about something completely different. And you will think that you are in front of a possessed psychopath who is studying you. That’s the difference between you. You are not connected by anything …

On the basis of psychiatric practice, the writer Dennis Lehane in his novel “The Closed Isle” creates a detailed idea of panopticon. This is a panopticon of an ideal prison, panopticon of human consciousness, panopticon as a model of the whole society. Naturally, such a bold idea of depicting our whole reality did not bypass the attention of Martin Scorsese, the lover of mind games.

In his film “Shutter Island 4K, Martin Scorsese masterfully presents the audience with such difficult novels. All film action develops in the spirit of the increasing tension of a depressive thriller from irony to fatal fear. The plot of action are mocking episodes, when the character DiCaprio is trying to figure out where the patient has gone, interrogating the mentally ill. Music is replaced by the storm and the onslaught of nature’s triumph outside the window, and the innocent journey of the character DiCaprio loses its innocence. From this point on, the action begins to develop in its pathological unpredictability. Tension increases, the storm increases, and the character DiCaprio is losing itself more and more. He understands that the sooner he finds the missing patient, the sooner he will leave this resident evil. Weeks change to days, hours to minutes, seconds to someone’s life.

The most unusual thing in this film is not the unusual plot or the atmosphere of mental panic, but the viewer himself, who enters the Scorsese freak show and travels in his own mind. Scorsese masterfully introduced the viewer into the characters of his film. The film becomes the starting point of the viewer for his own revelations.
