I would characterize this film as the most interesting project of Captain Piccard’s full-length adventures in terms of plot. In this film, you are introduced to a race of Borg, the mindless, brain-driven cyborgs. Piccard’s knowledge of how to fight them wins an attack on Earth, and as a result, the separated ship penetrates the screenwriters’ favorite move – the past, the moment where the first contact with the aliens took place. It is not difficult to assume the ship under whose command is obliged to prevent this catastrophe.
In spite of the quite logical ending, the movie keeps you in suspense. First of all, thanks to the musical accompaniment, which seems to be not very noticeable, but gives a great atmosphere. Second, the film’s main feature is the division of the overall plot into three storylines:
– the most dramatic (as far as it’s possible of course) – the Borg’s attempt to make Data as human as possible.
– the action on Earth by part of the crew – to help complete the rocket to Zefram
– and most interesting – Piccard’s attempt to get rid of the Enterprise invaders with the rest of the crew.
The Borg look quite ordinary – half-destroyed Frankensteins with mechanical inserts, with no special social behavior and no personality. But the makeup is awesome, you believe it’s definitely not human.
The main quibble with the entourage of the post-World War III future world is that there are no ruined cities, there are none at all. None of the future’s gimmicks, even the settlement looks like a normal garage cooperative! What are the robes instead of clothes, in short, does not feel that this is the future. The rocket is also quite ordinary, but you can already see inside that it is far superior to its modern counterparts.
Then there are the special effects. It feels like a small step back compared to Generations – the perfect mechanical special effects of the previous part look a lot better than the mechanical effects in this movie and they seem incredibly old and not believable (except, perhaps, for the stunning walk through the outer shell of the Enterprise with great soundtrack, I can’t call it music but it brings great atmosphere). You can’t help but notice the Borg cube with the attack of the Federation ships, it’s associated with the Death Star, well, it’s ’77, but this is ’96!
On the whole an excellent slow-motion science fiction in the spirit of Star Trek with a great plot and just great atmosphere, but with weak special effects.
