Hélène (Maria Cazares) learns from her best friend that her lover Jean has fallen out of love with her. She is the first to break up, but swears to herself that she will take revenge. At the waterfalls of the Bois de Boulogne she arranges a meeting between Jean and young Agnès, who lives with her ruined mother on offerings from lovers. Hélène cleverly intrigues to make Jean want to see Agnès again and fall desperately in love with her. The trap works perfectly. Jean marries Agnès, who also loves him. After the wedding ceremony, Hélène throws in his face, “You married a woman of easy behavior.” Agnès, who has tried unsuccessfully to tell the truth about herself, suffers frequent fainting spells. Jean pleads with her: “Hold on to life as best you can. Hold on to me. I love you.” Agnès whispers to him, “I’m staying.”
