‘Hell Of The Living Dead’ – horror?! In this case, the title doesn’t say anything at all. Although I’m a fan of Italian trash and cinema in general, I was mentally ready to watch another trash-zombie horror flick… I’ve never seen such madness (that’s a compliment). To call this clownery a horror movie simply does not turn the tongue.
It was the 80’s, commercially profitable genres were snapped up by everyone, and Bruno Mattei and Fregasso did not stay aside, having concocted a simply crazy, ‘explosive’, powerful trash…
Having ‘grabbed’ the first thing that came to hand – the zombie genre, they decided to make a lot of money, just like Lucio Fulci on his ‘Zombies’. Bruno Mattei has just begun to consolidate his status as a plagiarist and of course this creation is a scrap of plots from previously made zombie films. How can you not take advantage of the advantageous position when there is so much material to exploit? This includes the sensational cannibal genre and post-apocalyptic sci-fi (Bruno will get his hands on it a little later) and the fantasy genre, still beloved by many today.
From the very first frames, the viewer will notice the slapstick of the production, the completely inadequate behavior of the characters and dozens of silly situations… A true thrash! The commandos are dressed in unmentionable blue shirts and crumpled caps, non-stop uttering dialogues absurd in their pathos, and their actions can only be called idiotic. Plus everything is spiced up with ‘retarded’ zombies who almost have to be forced to bite you. Of course, you never run out of bullets in a movie like this and you can’t compare the heroism of the characters to anything else. There is also a spectacular blonde as a reporter and a scene where she walks around naked, distracting the viewer at a moment when there is nothing to show.
And what does the viewer expect in the end of this madhouse, seasoned with a good portion of humor? No happy ending…
There is no point in writing about this movie, you just have to see it. If you are a usual spectator, then this creation of Italian trash master Bruno Mattei, will look like a complete nonsense, not worthy of attention, and fans of the Italian thrash and euroculture may put this masterpiece on the most beautiful shelf, because this creation, even if it is beyond common sense, but still is the top of the Italian celluloid tesh – Olympus.
All in all, the movie is only for one category of people: true fans of Italian trash.
