Two Roma barons, who made their fortune in shady dealings, nevertheless managed to maintain mutual respect and sincere friendship, although they have not seen each other for 25 years. And now, after the ninth decade, they are forced to clean up the mess made by their many descendants.

I will say at once, for I dare not keep quiet: I will admire The Black Cat, The White Cat, praising every element of the striking Serbian creation with rapt attention and loving devotion. Emir Kusturica is a filmmaker whom I relate to with a very special sense of childlike delight. If you want to find someone like him, you are not likely to succeed. Kusturica is an amazing, rare, unique, and inimitable natural talent, and I can’t really call him “fashionable”. Trendy is something unreal and pretentious, not real and artificial. A Serbian director is real, natural, complete. And it doesn’t matter at all how he appears – as a deep-thinking philosopher, a radical ideologist or a good-natured cheerful merry fellow. There seems to be room for everyone in the soul of this stunning artist.
As has been rightly noted, Kusturica has hunted lions and bears, it’s time to hunt the common audience. Of course, “Black Cat, White Cat” is not devoid of meaning or morality, for the audience is still given a social message, showing the pettiness of social barriers and differences. “This is the beginning of a good friendship,” simple as that, for rich and for poor, for everyone and for everyone, without exception… And, I don’t know about anyone, but it’s worth a lot… But more attention was paid by Kusturica to color, mentality and picturesqueness, shooting down and obscuring the spirited humanist proclamation, making it simple, alphabetical and natural.
“Black Cat, White Cat” is a kind of oil painting. Every character here is a real hero. Bright, colorful, beautiful. This is not the Gypsies – rascals and crooks – which we are used to seeing in the subway, these are the real barons, living the high life. You’d think they would just live, just dance, just play, just argue, just die … Like all of us … But no! They do it so infectiously, with such rapture and infatuation that one can hardly restrain oneself from following them (here, of course, one must bow back before the talent of the actors, the director and his assistant director for these very actors).
It is not necessary (and hardly possible to do it adequately) to retell the plot of “Black Cat, White Cat”, for it is saturated “to the brim” with absurd incidents, absurd episodes, racy resolutions and “blackish”, but somehow crude humor, worthy of a separate comment. Funny, though unusual, and in another situation even inappropriate, incidents that make up the lives of the main characters – that is, almost all the characters – will, I think, to the liking of every viewer. In Thierry Arbogast’s subtle and unusual shots with unforgettable, captivating music by Vodzislav Aralik and Nele Karajlic, I am sure everyone will find something amazingly positive and optimistic that will charge you with vigor and joy for long, long hours, days, maybe even weeks.
Perhaps I would like to compare Emir Kusturica’s brilliant directing, the life skills of Bajram Severdzan, Srdjan Todorovic, Branka Katic with something, but I cannot. I would like to find a likeness of “Black Cat, White Cat” for those who haven’t seen it yet, but, alas, apparently, not fate. All that remains is to repeat over and over again a set of the same-type, but, as it seems to me, juicy words. This Kusturica film is infectious, vivid, dense, rich, strong, colorful, intense, lush, fun and unique. “Black Cat, White Cat” is a very, very, very positive movie, vitaminizing any viewer who wants to bring back the colors of his, unfortunately, not at all “wide-legged” life.
