The main character of the film Trelkovsky (Polanski), a Polish office worker, lives in Paris. He rents an apartment in a quiet building, the tenants of which dislike the newcomer. After he learns that the previous tenant (a woman) jumped out of the apartment window, he visits the dying woman in the hospital and meets her friend Stella (Adjani). The woman suddenly lets out an eerie scream and dies. This event binds Trelkovsky and Stella together. They almost become lovers, but then drift away from each other. Trelkovsky experiences increasing difficulties with the tenants of the house – they complain that he makes noise, threaten to take action. By all means, the tenant wants to reveal the secret of the dead woman and her fate. He is sure that the neighbors want to kill him. Technically, âThe Tenantâ is done perfectly, with terrific camerawork by Nykvist, appropriate music by Sard and convincing acting by all the actors.
