Late autumn 1944. The final days of the Japanese occupation of the Philippines. The war for territory has already been lost, the high command has been evacuated, and the infantry has been left to die. Without provisions, medicine, or ammunition, under Allied bombs and bullets from local partisans. Private Tamura was stuck on Leyte Island because of his illness and gradually became âthe man who wasn’t there.â He was kicked out of the hospital and sent back to the trenches so they wouldn’t have to waste pills on him.
