Late 19th century. Harland Rust is a criminal with a price on his head. He travels to Kansas to rescue his 13-year-old grandson Lucas, who accidentally killed a ranch owner and has been sentenced to hang. Together they flee to Mexico, but they are pursued by legendary US Marshal Wood Helm and bounty hunter Fenton Lang.
