The annual Christmas ball at the three Miss Morkans’ house brought together all their acquaintances—relatives and old family friends. Among them were the sisters’ nephew Gabriel Conroy and his wife Greta. During the evening, entertaining the guests, Mr. d’Arcy sang the song “The Girl from Aughrim” and brought back sad memories for Greta of her first, long-lost love when she was a girl in rural Galway.
