The film is based on a Broadway musical adapted from *Romeo and Juliet*. Even decades later, this film remains a classic of the musical film genre. It tells the story of two lovers who met in New York City, a city rife with criminal gangs. The heroine belongs to the Puerto Rican gang known as the “Sharks,†while the hero belongs to the white gang known as the “Rockets.â€
