Yielding to the influence of his older brother, Kane Burgess goes to the crime and burns on the first case, causing the death of an innocent person. He will spend the next seven years in the harshest prison in England. Previously, he was simply ready to stand up for himself, but the daily battles for his life made him a beast. All the time he was imprisoned, he dreamed of revenge. He manages to get out of prison, and now he can take revenge on those who made him a cold-blooded killer.

Jesse Johnson has already established himself in the field of simple, but strong fighters, the so-called category ‘B’. The recent ‘Triple Threat’ could have turned out to be something more, but unfortunately did not live up to its potential. And now the director returned to the more familiar track of a criminal action movie with a constant participant in all of his extreme films, Scott Adkins. And definitely, he is better at making such a movie.
“Revenge” is a rough, masculine movie with a touch of English crime and an extremely realistic massacre. The muzzles here beat so reliably and naturally that sometimes you even feel the blows with which the participants in this action give each other abundantly, the crunch of bones, knocked out teeth. The performance in this aspect is at a very high level, there is practically nothing to complain about, and I don’t really want to.
And if there is complete order with the main attribute of an action movie, then the impression is somewhat spoiled by the narrative concept itself and excessive chatter. The main character, whose coolness is vividly illustrated on his face, swiftly and unceremoniously takes over a gangster pub. There, with a sawed-off shotgun in his hands and a short demonstration of his intentions, he, in anticipation of the main culprit of his rampage, is engaged in the most ‘suitable’ business for such a moment. He just starts chatting and telling his story to these thugs, and at the same time to the viewer. It is because of this that the film begins to rapidly lose its tension and atmosphere. Initially looking like a crime drama with elements of an action movie thanks to the theme of revenge, it simply turns into a crime thriller with unnecessary dialogues and superficial semantic load, removing which would have resulted in a real furious drive.
Separately, I would like to dwell on the scenes in the prison with the telling name ‘Meat Grinder’. This is the brightest and most violent part of the picture. Just what is the first skirmish behind bars, to which the main character owes his ‘brilliant’ smile. When looking at the prison section, I got a rather strange association, as if I see the formation of Yuri Boyka in ‘Black Hills’. Indeed, in ‘Indisputable 2’ we see the already hardened and ruthless hero of Adkins, and if you think about how he became like that, then it is difficult to imagine a better embodiment than in ‘Vengeance’. Thank you from me for such reflections and for the harsh Adkins picture. All the same, there is a certain type of role that suits Adkins, and the less words he has, and the more action, the better. Well, his performance and physical form, as always, are at their best.
The plot was not deliberately touched upon, and even here it is not the cement on which everything rests. Yes, it is simple, but it exists, and thanks to the talkativeness of the hero, the viewer will be chewed in full, so much so that nothing will have to be thought of. But the title musical composition caught on, even though in the introduction I clearly recognized the motive of the main theme of ‘Phantasm’, mixed with other motives, reminiscent of either Morricone, or someone else. I liked such a mix, the only thing that was lacking in such a sound filling was the drama of the frame, and it was just asking for it.
Nevertheless, we have before us a good-quality picture for its genre, and if the director shifted the accents a little and removed the distracting and empty dialogues, a role model could come out altogether. In any case, ‘Vengeance’ goes to the asset and Johnson and Adkins, and lovers of bloody massacre in the collection.
