A story about a demon who seeks out naughty children during Christmas to punish them.
4k movies reviews
I consider the film Krampus, directed by Michael Dougherty, to be a good representative of the horror comedy genre, while the film is both scary and funny at the same time. You really need to have talent, adhering to a certain line, when the film stays in the middle between horror and comedy, without slipping into one thing, although it seemed to me that there are still more horrors in the film.
Watching Krampus I have fond memories of Joe Dante’s Gremlins, filmed as far back as 1984. Indeed, the atmosphere of horror and humor in these two films is very similar. Only instead of the cute fluffy Gizmo and evil green gremlins, similar to a mixture of lizards and elves, we have gingerbread, cute but with cruel intentions, gingerbread, a toothy soft toy bear, a transformer, a flying creature with a doll head, elves and many other monsters well and of course the master of all this evil is the ancient horned god of fertility, the prototype of Santa Claus Krampus.
The very image of Krampus seemed to me similar to the Jeepers Creepers of Victor Salva. And what? Also an ominous incomprehensible demon, only appearing not every 23 spring, but on Christmas Eve to naughty families, while Krampus’s appearance is just as dark and mysterious.
I think that the first half of the film turned out to be more interesting than the second, where a scary tale reaches its climax showing us all the monsters in a row and even red-hot lavas of fire, which sounds somewhat wild for a film that takes place in winter on Christmas Day.
Suspense, scary moments, the atmosphere of horror are performed well, fabulous horror films of the 80s are remembered as ‘Dolls’, ‘Gremlins’, ‘Critters’, ‘Tremors’, ‘Demonic toys’, which frightened quite a lot in childhood. I think the kids ‘Krampus’ will seem like a very scary horror movie, like, say, I was afraid of the Chucky doll as a child or Freddy Krueger. For adults, however, ‘Krampus’ is a good attraction of horror and comedy.
I am very glad that a new well-shot New Year’s horror film has come out. Perhaps since the days of ‘Gremlins’, ‘The Snowman’ by Michael Cooney, I have not seen anything so exciting and atmospheric. Yes, this is in some way a delusional movie, but for the uniqueness of the idea, it deserves a good mark. With the exception of the Gremlins, I can’t remember a more similar kind of paintings with a well-conveyed atmosphere of Christmas, a fairy tale. The same ‘Silent Night, Deadly Night’, ‘Santa Killer’ are inferior to ‘Krampus’ in the spirit of the holiday and look less interesting.
Verdict. Know what you’re going to the movies. ‘Krampus’ is by no means a fun family comedy ala ‘Home Alone’, but quite a creepy, extraordinary representative of the New Year’s horror movie with elements of comedy. I think that fans of ‘Gremlins’ and other children’s horror stories will not be disappointed. Children ‘Krampus’ will definitely be able to scare, but I recommend for adults to prepare and at least read the description of the film so that they know what they are going to the cinema and not be disappointed in the future. There will definitely not be anyone indifferent to Krampus.
