Legendary jazz performer Dexter Gordon brilliantly portrays fictional saxophone player and tenor Dale, a musician slowly losing his battle with alcoholism. Set in 1950, the guy lives apart from his family, and is connected to reality only through the New York jazz world. Dale gets an offer to play in Paris, where there are many other black American musicians. But alas, he doesn’t have long to live.
