The movie tells about an unusual love story between the captain of a cargo ship Charlie Allnutt (Bogart) and a prim English missionary Rose Seyer (Katharine Hepburn). Rose can’t stand Charlie, but fate pushes them together. The First World War begins, and they have to sail on an old tugboat. When a German warship blocks their way, Rose makes a plan to defeat the Germans and escape.
