An ordinary summer morning. A cat walks along a low stone fence. An ordinary, striped, yellow-eyed cat. He jumps softly to the ground, squints when he sees a fly, tries to catch it with his paw, to no avail, and runs on. Suddenly, out of nowhere, there comes a huge dog’s face and a menacing, heavy growl. Right in front of him appears a dirty, wild, hungry Saint Bernard, who has seen his prey. And the chase begins… through the streets of the waking city, crossing the streets on the run, causing cars to brake sharply and honk. Thus, almost hitting the Cat, a posh chrome-plated red Plymouth with the inscription “I am Christine” and a plate “Rock-n-roll will never die” on the rear bumper (*Hello, beautiful Christine! ) And Cat runs off at full speed, saving his precious pelt… The vicious dog monster Cujo is chasing him, hoping to devour his fuzzy breakfast, foam falling in shreds from his unopened mouth. The cat flees, the dog is left with nothing. Thus begins the amazing and spooky Adventures of the Cat with No Boots and No Name…
Nameless Cat. Free, independent, smart, cunning, dodgy, moderately cute, not moderately lonely…
There are thousands of such simple mongrel cats. Stray or domestic, nobody wanted or someone’s favorite, and everyone has hundreds of stories and life experiences behind them… People sometimes do not notice them… Not paying attention to the presence of animals, they sort out relations or do something which they would like to keep silent. Cats are witnesses of human dramas and comedies, melodramatic stories and tragic endings… They understand everything, but they keep silent… And who knows what they think, watching these strange illogical people?
Cat’s Eye. Yellow (green, brown, blue) with a long vertical black pupil. It sees everything. Man’s sins and mistakes, falls and blunders… The cat’s eye is objective and unbiased… How much could an ordinary stray nameless cat tell about the people and non-humans he met on his way…
So did our four-legged hero … The story of his travels probably hummed Stephen King’s pet, curled up in the evenings in his lap, and King told it to loyal readers. And director Dino De Laurentiis (I have no doubt he loves cats, too) allowed the audience to see this whole strange, absurd, unpredictable and slightly mystical sequence of events…
Story One. Quit smoking or lose everything you care about… If you don’t want to, we’ll make you. Stephen King presents us with the most effective way to stop smoking. Brutal, shocking, unpunished… The cat gets into serious trouble, he is mocked, tortured with an electric current, and all this in order to convince another client of the harm caused by nicotine. The ending is a killer, although it makes perfect sense…
*Whispered in confidence: This is where Tarantino might have gotten his inspiration for his episode “Four Rooms”. But shh… I didn’t tell you anything…
Story two. Can’t you go over the ledge? The cat witnesses an original gangster’s pastime. Instead of just putting a bullet in the forehead of the undesirable guy who dares to steal the boss’s wife, the boss makes a life-and-death bet with him… And he has all the fun. The cat resents the way things are unfolding, makes a loud statement about it, but the killers don’t care about his meowing protests…
The good thing about this story is that it is completely unpredictable. Additionally, the black humor and the gorgeous acting are a joy… Also, as a bonus, I’ll note the ugly birds – the pigeons. I was genuinely amused when these insolent, stupid creatures appeared in the frame. Although the hero of the bet was not laughing … I think Maestro Hitchcock would have appreciated this kind of bow to his address from Maestro Stephen King …
Story three. An ordinary country house, an ordinary family – mom, dad and daughter Amanda (a rosy-cheeked Drew Barrymore)… and someone small, emerging at night from the wall in the children’s room, snorting and snorting viciously, with predatory eyes, stealing the strength and energy from the sleeping girl along with her breath… The cat didn’t come to this house by accident. He constantly hears appeals for help, because something terrible is happening, and the adults can’t protect the girl… Mama drives Cat out of the house, it’s easier for her, lying in bed, reading “The Graveyard of Pets” than believing the words of her daughter, her father just has no time to deal, and Amanda both think she’s an inventor…
The story is good for its storytelling… This is not an absurd, human-only cruelty, here the evil lies in what is called the Unknown… Where all fairy tales and legends come from… A nasty troll with bells on his cap… And our mustachioed, striped hero, selflessly rushing to defend the human cub… The final battle with the villain in an entourage of books, toys, balloons, pillows is endearing… Beautiful, naive and, damn it, beautiful…
By the way, the nameless Cat finally has a name worthy of his militant heroic character – General.
The striped General has finally found his family. And the General will guard it day and night…
