4k movies reviews
Many people who are interested in cinema or want to plunge into old classic Hollywood sooner or later come to this film. The accolades from critics around the world are tempting to quickly get acquainted with what has been put in first place for the entire existence of the film industry. But I’m afraid many will be disappointed.
Perhaps connoisseurs of cinema or its inveterate lovers, as well as connoisseurs of the specific narrative conduct that is observed in the motion picture, will be able to truly enjoy this work. But people who decide to simply provide themselves with leisure for the evening will hardly find this film amusing for themselves.
This movie is on the list of those that you need to watch carefully, delve into the details, try to find what the director wants to say. Having watched this film twice, I only grasped its main essence, but I could not find something to make me call this film the greatest. The characters do not seem to me to be memorable, the main drama does not touch me in any way, and the course of the narrative lulls me to sleep with its monotony and does not grab my attention in any way. Nevertheless, the camera work deserves praise: the picture of the film is pleasant. And the realization that a huge layer of work was done by almost one person – Orson Welles – arouses sincere admiration and respect.
I cannot say that this film is bad or overrated. It’s just that it was definitely not made for a mass audience. Yes, and it will not be easy for a young audience to master this film (by the way, I, at the time of this writing, am 21 years old). Most likely, from the point of view of the heritage of cinema, this brainchild is interesting to study and delve into. Probably, for that time – it was a truly revolutionary cinema. But nowadays it is extremely difficult to realize this fact, even if this movie became the ancestor of a lot of other films or even entire genres.
