Apparently, Nostradamus failed to give an ominous tone to his predictions, if they not so much scare any marauders, but provoke them to night walks through the crypts. On the TV screen, four masters find trouble on their own asses. Unsuccessful treasure hunters are aware of the eternally hungry demons, but knowledge in their case is not power. A small drop of blood turned out to be a powerful catalyst, launching a monstrous mechanism of hunting all living beings at a new stage. Since the time of the epoch-making “Demons” time, the fanged monsters have ceased to ooze green liquid, but their blood has become very toxic, and, probably, it was she who allowed them to penetrate into the real world. A certain person named Sally did not have a party, and watching to defuse an interesting horror movie turned into a nightmare in reality, and now a whole skyscraper risks inheriting the fate of an ancient tomb, where lovers of marauding fun will one day visit.
Blood boils, claws gnash, fangs click, and throats growl – the famous “tools of evil” are back in action. The tandem of Dario Argento and Lamberto Bava, without much sophistication, again fills the screen with an epidemic of demonism in a new conglomerate. The tall building should have protected its inhabitants, but in reality it appears as an eerie multi-storey casemate, the underground tier of which precisely communicates with the underworld. The number of demons is multiplying at an alarming rate, the party participants will soon acquire a greenish skin tone, predatory manners and briskly start scurrying around the floors. This time, Bava was more generous with attention to the unwitting instigator of the riots. Sally, a lover of gloomy clothes, appears as “patient zero” spreading the infection, and if in the original film people needed to get a wound for treatment, then everything is simpler in the sequel – a drop of blood on the body and the process began. It is not difficult to see in such a turn the desire of the director to give maximum dynamics to terrible events, which is especially important after an overly thoughtful introduction.
Dissenting screams shake a gloomy skyscraper left without electricity, and the climax of the action makes you quickly forget about the number 2 in the title of the film, because the screen is more of a midquel than a sequel. Bava did not hesitate to involve several actors from the first part at once, among whom the brutal black ringleader stands out again. Formerly a thug and now a flamboyant bodybuilding coach, he did a good job of making horror spectacular, but he is not alone. The director no longer found the desire to arrange a butcher shop in his film, and therefore the emphasis is on the many-sidedness of bloodthirsty creatures. From now on, a completely suitable demon can even turn out from a dog. A tiny, but very toothy little imp immodestly demands a lot of attention to itself, and the ability of monsters to deftly appeal to the pity of frightened fugitives is most shocking. The more demons begin to take part in the bloody feast, the more the director begins to get carried away. Lamberto Bava did not deny himself the pleasure for some reason to arrange rides around the city at night with the participation of regular gopniks, but unlike the first film, there were not enough connections in the plot. Yes, and a married couple, for some incomprehensible reason, left a young child alone to watch horror films, was introduced for a dubious purpose – by all means select for each character those who will mourn him.
The seething of blood in green veins can lead to amazing results – in the setting of a deadly tag game, the director regularly finds a place for black humor, which is only short, but juicy dialogues of cool, but not very smart bodybuilders. Bava’s logic is lame pretty, which is confirmed by the elevator itself, but such nuances paradoxically have a positive effect on the perception of the picture. At a time when special effects were a luxury inaccessible, a lot depended on the director’s ability to create the right atmosphere of doom. Contemptuous of all the little things, Signor Lamberto, in conjunction with Signor Dario, do not get tired of frightening their viewer, for which sometimes it is enough to re-appear the restless Sally demon, who does not need to be given commands to be in the spotlight. In addition, the immensely furious and extremely aggressive creatures amaze with their ability to think well and navigate on the go.
Many residents of the skyscraper were forced to change their appearance to frightening, but it does not seem that Lamberto Bava played enough with his best creations. Within a strictly outlined one and a half hour framework, the Italian managed to re-implement not the most sophisticated scenario. All that was needed was to slightly green the monsters and give them slightly different habits. “Demons 2” has become a completely independent film, which, although it inherits most of the features of the original, but has other points of support, and the main one is first-class suspense, which Bava learned to pump from film to film, only sometimes being distracted by purely commercial and therefore second-rate films … The next stage of the union of two venerable horror makers finally set a new standard for depicting otherworldly monsters, in their spectacularity far superior to the ghouls of George Romero. No matter how frivolous the demons sometimes smelled, they skillfully did their job, providing cult status and the second film with their participation.
