I must say right away, I think Lynch’s Dune is one of the best science fiction films of all time! Fell in love with ‘Dune’ from the first viewing many years ago and I watch it with pleasure to this day!
The film is very, hmm, VERY misunderstood in the year 1984 – when it actually came out. The audience, who first heard the name of Frank Herbert, muttered with displeasure at the pretentious decorations and an overly incomprehensible plot (just like right now, by the way!). Fans of Frank Herbert, in turn, grumbled unhappily that their favorite book, David, it turns out, badly mutilated …
And I’ll tell you what, disgruntled gentlemen! I read the book (yes, yes!) And declare: THERE WAS NO BEST SCREEN AND WILL NOT BE! Yes, the film is, to put it mildly, different from the book, yes, at the end of the film it is raining (‘Oh my God! How is that?’ – the book lovers clutch at their hearts). But the film only benefits from this, by God! The film is massive, epic, and visually rich and beautiful. The scenery and costumes are beyond praise! Special effects? Oh, there are many, by the way, grumble about special effects, but they were actually at their best for 1984!
It is known that David filmed this film under strict supervision of the producers, which he did not like very much. But, despite this, the film came out surprisingly verified, there is nothing superfluous in it, and the plot is understandable for anyone who knows how to turn on the brain while watching! Speaking of the ‘brain’: I have never seen a SMART, SOUL AND EMOTIONAL science fiction movie!
Acting is something that is difficult to find in our time! A separate word about Kyle McLachlan – eat me Shai-Hulud if someone looks more like Paul Atreides than Kyle!
And of course, without which ‘Dune’ would not have been ‘Dune’ – the unforgettable music of Toto! Ta-ta-tadA … ta-ta-tadaAA … ta-taa-tadAAA! Equally delightful, brilliant and catchy music, perhaps only in ‘Star Wars’ and in ‘The Godfather’!
Eh, it is a pity that many do not see and do not understand the beauty of this film. Not only is this an immortal classic, but I will never tire of repeating, ONE OF THE BEST FILMS IN HISTORY!
