Twenty-five years after the brutal murders that rocked the quiet town of Woodsboro and the cult slasher series based on those events, high school student Tara is attacked in the same way as in the movie. Upon learning of what has happened, her older sister Sam returns to Woodsboro and asks for the help of former town sheriff Dewey Riley in catching the new killer hiding behind the mask of Ghostface.

The premiere of Scream, which is the fifth installment of the franchise, has started. I, on the other hand, have been a fan since I was a child. The story of Sidney Prescott, who survived terrible events in the small town of Woodsboro, stuck in my heart. Each time she manages to escape death by a maniac who is an avid fan of horror movies. The first four installments were directed by, I dare say, the great Wes Craven, who gave the world not only Scream, but also the equally famous Freddy Krueger of Elm Street.
All parts of Scream are competently staged, interesting and ironic slashers, of which there are not many, despite the huge number of various maniacs, and have a plot and a denouement, where the viewer wonders who the killer is this time? After all, the killer is always someone you know. Kudos to Mr. Craven for that.
Wes left the world of the living in 2015, and it’s been 10 years since the last movie about a maniac who interrogates victims with the question, “What’s your favorite horror movie?” And when another sequel is taken on by an unknown director, at least the first replacement in the history of the franchise, it becomes a little scary that the film is being made to tick for money and Wes will be nervously turning over in his coffin.
The new “Scream” takes us back to the town of Woodborough, where, 25 years after Sidney Prescott’s story began, murders take place and a man in a Scream suit shreds a group of teenagers, revealing secrets from the past. This is the kind of synopsis that has a sequel. I’m insanely glad that the new story wasn’t twisted tastelessly, but rather presented with an interesting plot that manages to surprise many fans of the franchise.
What’s good about “Scream” 2022? First, the film still has a plot that may seem simple, but it’s not without interesting viewing and the mystery of “Who’s hiding under the mask?” Second, the film handles the original very skillfully and respectfully, which makes watching the references to previous installments an indescribable joy. And believe me, there are plenty of them. Third, this is the bloodiest part of all five. The screaming this time is as brutal as ever. The way the authors don’t shy away from showing murders that are sometimes very “sweet,” which delights the inner maniac inside who loves this kind of thing. Fourth, an interesting cast. Here you have the star of the TV series “The Boys” and the series “13 Reasons Why”. And, of course, the original trio in the person of Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette, who are always a joy to see. Fifth, and most importantly, the movie has plot twists that manage to surprise so much that you get goosebumps running down your skin, your hair stands on end and you cover your mouth with your hand from what you see. One of which can make you shed a stingy tear, for it was so damn cool, risky and sad.
In the end, we got a very decent sequel that didn’t fall flat, and even more so respectfully and unexpectedly surprises the original. And maybe he did not surpass the original, but his sequel he managed to bypass confidently, which unequivocally in the future can be safely rewatched, hosting, as fans in Woodsboro “Krikofon”, but only “Krikofon”. It’s true, in my memory, “Scream” is the only franchise in its genre that holds its own for all parts without having anything bad that makes you want to spit. Thanks first and foremost to Wes Craven, and thanks to the author for the incredible job he did. I think he would have appreciated it. Appreciate and you, if you are a fan of all the parts, I’m sure the sequel will not disappoint you.
