One winter evening, when there was nothing interesting on TV, I accidentally stumbled upon this film. At first I did not observe very carefully, but then I could not tear myself away. I have reviewed it several times, and each time I love it even more. Glory to all the gods that I did not switch to another channel and that I turned on the TV at all!
There is probably something in the life of each of us that is of paramount importance to us, which we just need to tell the world, only when we try to do this we encounter an unexpected obstacle: what seems to us most important in the world, immediately loses its high meaning and, clothed in the form of words, it becomes somehow petty, mundane. I feel about the same feelings when trying to describe this film. But I’ll try.
Plot. On a hot day at the end of summer, four boys set off to look at the body of their dead peer. They are all quite different, but they are united by friendship, sincere, strong, not clouded by the difficulties of adulthood. Each of them has its own problems: Chris from an unfavorable family; Gordy’s brother died and his parents did not notice him and his talent at all; Teddy, injured at the hands of his father, but nevertheless loving him and Vern, the naive guy who most of the ridicule is addressed to.
A lot of events take place along the way – they have to flee from the dog, and from the train, and stand up for themselves. Going on a journey, the guys just wanted to see what they had not yet seen. But they returned home already completely different, having matured.
– Enough, Teddy, behave by age!
-This is my age, I will be young only once!
-But you will remain a fool for life.
The most wonderful scenes are campfire gatherings and running from the train. How many times I look, I always worry and clasp my hands convulsively 🙂 And what is the moment when Chris and Gordy talk at night around the fire (especially if you watch a movie in the darkness and silence, it feels like you are next to them).
Here is just a story about the contest “who will eat more” – too realistic shown. One could do without such details.
The acting is great. River, Will, Corey and Jerry did it just a bang. But most of all I want to mention the River Phoenix – they could not pick anyone better for the role of Chris. He completely conveyed all the emotions, all the feelings and experiences of his hero, a boy who would like to escape from the environment in which he lives, but his surname alone prevents this. Despite this, he remains kind and sincere. Will Wheaton – also brilliantly played Gordy, who lost his brother, misses him and parental attention.
It may seem that this is a children’s film. But itÂ’s more about growing up, about the time when you choose friends not for something, not in an effort to get any benefit from them, but simply because you are comfortable with them; that you need to appreciate them and appreciate the memory of them. Because nothing lasts forever, and after many years only memories can remain.
