One of the most noticeable and frequently used trends in Hollywood since the commercial payback period is when a successful film gets a sequel. This trend can also be seen with the legendary sci-fi saga ‘Star Trek’, only it is so large-scale that it can be set as an example, how time after time you can collect a decent box office and increase the army of fans.
After the characters of the ‘New Generation’ – Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his companions – set off on their own journey through space, and the characters of the ‘Original Series’ went into a well-deserved retirement, it seemed that Star Trek as a feature film might sink into oblivion. It turned out not so – the first part of ‘First Contact’ brought and commercial success and fans were satisfied with what they saw. Therefore, it is not surprising that just two years after ‘First Contact’ was released the next film with the prefix ‘Uprising’.
The people responsible for the success of ‘First Contact’ were hired to work on ‘Uprising’ – Jonathan Frakes (who also played one of the main roles of first mate Riker) took the director’s chair and Rick Berman was hired to write the script. The latter wanted to hire other screenwriters who had worked with him in ‘First Contact’, but they declined and Michael Piller was hired to help. Why am I telling you about this? The fact is that ‘Uprising’, although it twice exceeded the profits invested, but could not reach the ‘First Contact’ and in my opinion it is precisely because of the plot.
The thing is that the story about a certain Fountain of Youth is more of a reference to the mythological Middle Ages, to stories with wizards and witches, kings and knights. Thus, ‘Star Trek: Uprising’ became a fantasy-fantasy film, which did not fit the concept of the franchise at all. Of course, the gallant Captain Jean-Luc Picard is as always on the horse and ahead in defending the insulted, but again, because of this fantasy mix he is more of a knight Lancelot than the leader of the invincible starship. In addition, the idea of rebelling against the cynical heads of the United Federation openly smacks of the ‘politicization’ of Star Trek, while in the past fiction has provided an excuse to digress from this, although Star Trek had something of this in other parts (for example, in The Undiscovered Country). But it didn’t make ‘Uprising’ any better.
If the script had its shortcomings, the creativity in his creation was not accepted, but here are the main characters, or rather the actors who performed them, there should be almost no complaints. In addition, the heroes received a new development in terms of romantic relationships. On the whole, they looked like the same brave team, serious and strong, pulled together not only by the bonds of duty, but also by the bonds of friendship, and now even love (in general, friendly relationships – this is one of the main platforms on which ‘Star Trek’ is based).
