Victor Piver is an industrialist, a wealthy man, and “somewhat” racist. He is Catholic and categorically intolerant of anything that does not fit his notion of “normality.” Piver is planning to marry off his daughter and is rushing to make it to the wedding in Paris, but on the way, he gets into a car accident. Piver’s driver, Solomon, a Jew, refuses to help him, citing the Sabbath. As a result, Piver fires him and goes to seek help on his own.
