A television drama based on the novel by Nigel Balchin. The story is set in England in 1941.

Sammy Rice is an ordnance engineer, one of the “behind-the-scenes guys” of World War II. His disability has made him cynical and disillusioned—at home he struggles with alcoholism, and at work with politics. Worse still, he fears he isn’t good enough for the woman he loves.

The stakes rise when the enemy begins dropping a new type of booby-trap bomb, resulting in numerous casualties. Rice gets a chance to serve his country and, as a bonus, boost his self-esteem. But when he comes face to face with real danger, all his old flaws resurface. Will he finally be able to prove his worth and put his demons to rest?
