In his world, Gru is the most powerful villain anyone has ever seen. But the question is, how did he become this dominant force? Minions: Gruvitation shows us the fascinating story of 12-year-old Gru and the path to his villainous life. Both familiar faces and new characters come together to make this a very interesting, yet nostalgia-inducing film.
Minions: Gruvitation tells the backstory of how Gru (Steve Carell) became the infamous villain he is today. After being rejected as a replacement for Wild Knuckles (Alan Arkin) and failing to earn a much-coveted spot in the Vicious 6 supervillain group, Gru suddenly finds himself on the run. As fate would have it, Gru’s dream of becoming Wild Knuckles’ mentor soon comes true, but not without Gru now having to rely on Wild Knuckles and his henchmen to fight back against the Vicious 6.
The three main minions, Kevin, Stuart and Bob, each have unique character traits that make these movies work. Minions: Grunting you can see how each minion plays a different role in how Groo grows as a villain and as a person. Kevin is the smart and responsible leader – he makes sure everything goes according to plan. Stuart is someone who is always in touch with reality and makes sure the truth is known – he may seem disinterested, but he is very helpful. Bob is a carefree and innocent soul who always tries to make the most of any situation. Without all three of these characters, this movie would not be the same. There are many subtle references to previous films that also add to the comedic tone. For example, in the scene where Gru and Wild Knuckles try to rob a bank, the bank president shows them a picture of his grandson, who turns out to be none other than the budding villain Vector. Of course, young Gru doesn’t know that Vector will play a big role in his future, but the audience certainly does. These subtle references are what contribute to the nostalgic feeling we get when watching this movie. And, of course, we can’t forget about Gru’s iconic closet, which he already wore as a child.
The message of Minion: Gruvitation is that sometimes everyone needs a little help. Although he doesn’t immediately realize it, Gru eventually admits that he needs help to become the successful villain he wants to be.
‘Minions: Gruvitation’ is such a fun movie to watch. The appealing characters just keep viewers hungry for more. I give it 10 stars out of 10 and recommend it for kids ages 5 to 12, although anyone can enjoy this movie.
