A historical dramatization of the life of the great sixteenth-century English humanist Thomas More, a statesman, lawyer, and philosopher known for his dystopian judgments about the state. As Lord Chancellor and naturally a Catholic, and thus a supporter of the supreme authority of the Pope, More refused to swear an oath to Henry VIII as supreme head of the English Church. Henry VIII – a controversial figure in British history – usurping power in the country, at all costs wanted to divorce Catherine of Aragon and, defying the instructions of the church, to marry Anne Boleyn. Thomas More, taking advantage of the confrontation between the British monarch and the Roman Church, tried to introduce his counter-reform ideas about a just state, but was imprisoned in the Tower, accused of treason and executed in front of the curious Londoners, and Henry VIII was forced to fulfill his instructions. The fate of the monarch’s chosen one, Anne Boleyn, was quite tragic.
