“The Creature from the Black Lagoon” is simply a true cult for the people of America. This film was even included in the list of the fifty most important films for the science fiction and horror genre. At first glance, it is an unremarkable film that does not stand out from the crowd of competitors, but it is only at first glance. If you dig deeper, you can see where the legs of a lot of modern slashers come from. What do you think of the idea of a lone monster slowly killing off the main characters in a movie? This idea later grew into such mastodons of the genre as Alien, Predator, and many others.
The picture has a style. His presence is not immediately notice – the first twenty minutes of watching the movie is not very interesting, but when the action itself, you literally freeze in anticipation of the future action. The incredibly impressive denouement is one of the reasons for the film’s popularity, and perhaps the main reason.
What is characteristic of the fifties, the film simply abounds in a variety of clichés and clichés. These include the absurdity of the characters’ actions, the low-budget costumes, and the main character, who always stumbles at the most unnecessary moment. But it’s not even annoying, it’s hilarious. We’ll never see that again, and that’s a pity, because it brings a special atmosphere to the picture, conveys the mood that makes the viewer watch the film to the end.
The actors play very naively, but, at the same time, well convey the emotions, thoughts and feelings the creators gave them. The dialogues are rather good, there is no silly detachment from the general action as it is in some other similar pictures.
There are several interesting scenes, which cause a persistent sense of déjà vu. When the underwater monster is watching the swimming girl, you already and clearly remember that a similar scene was in the famous “Jaws”. Now everyone understands what Spielberg was inspired by when he created this masterpiece.
The very case in which the age of the movie only benefited him. It’s a must-see – a classic, as it were.
