Film description

The film tells the story of a good cop involved in a dangerous pursuit of Cordell, a “maniac cop” who administers bloody justice on the streets of New York at his own discretion. This time, Cordell rises from the grave in order to restore the good name of the comatose woman – police officer Kate.

She was shot in the shootout and charged with the brutal murder of a “bystander” who was in fact a burglar drug addict who had taken a hostage. And Kat was framed by TV reporters who rigged the video during the editing. But terrifying in his ruthless revenge, the “maniac cop” is ready to deal with all the “bad guys”.

4k movies reviews
Ultimately, “Maniac Cop” – a slasher series that ended on the third part – showed the world that there is such a conscientious attitude to their universe and at the same time mediocre. The entire trilogy was directed by William Lustig, and the permanent screenwriter was Larry Cohen, however, this fact did not prevent each of the three films of the trilogy from being completely different films.

Part one was a brutal and bloody slasher. In it, Maniac Cop Matt Cordell was shown in the guise of a serial killer avenging people, who killed people because he was framed and sent to a maximum security prison, where he had to accept his first death from the killers, whom he himself was in this prison. and led, defending the peace and peaceful life of the citizens of his city. The second part resembled more films about the Terminator. In it, Matt Cordell at some point you start to feel sorry for. In the sequel, he killed people in batches and, in general, by his very appearance resembled an invincible death machine, a kind of Jason Voorhees without a mask and in a police uniform. The third part is rather a bloody thriller with elements of an action movie and a detective story. In it, Matt Cordell, after his next death, returned from the dead, but this time he kills only those people who stand in his way – his new mission, this time, oddly enough, connected with charity.

It is unbearable to see a maniac in a new guise in every new film of the trilogy. I refuse to understand Larry Cohen’s motives. The ideal look of Matt Cordell was created by him in the script of the first film, but what was the need to constantly correct the character of the ruthless killer, the purpose of his bloody deeds and, in fact, the style of the film itself? The sequel was still forgivable for harsh corrections, but the triquel went further, linking the universe of “Maniac Cop” with mysticism and other nonsense, characteristic of thrillers rather than serious male slashers. Yes, the triquel is still intriguing, but there are none of the sensations that appeared when watching the original film and the second part. The atmosphere sags every now and then, while the love story was returned to the film, but the former tension is not observed. Moreover, it is completely absent and is turned on only in some moments in which the film is really capable of delighting the slasher-lover, but no more.

Also appeared in the triquela scenes and stunts, which are usually found in action films, but not in slashers. But this time the killer’s motives went wrong. Some of his actions defy logical explanation, but we will not talk about them – so as not to spoil your pleasure (pleasure?) From watching the film. In an amicable way, the film does not deserve more than six points, but Larry Cohen cannot be denied one thing. He meticulously followed the fate of Matt Cordell and transferred the development of events from the previous parts from sequel to sequel. From the point of view of the integrity of the universe, one can rejoice for a triquel. Often triquels look like black sheep against the background of previous installments, but this did not happen with “Maniac Cop”. The film is a direct sequel to the second part, which was a direct sequel to the first. There are simply no ambiguities in the transitions between parts in the universe of “Maniac Cop”, and therefore the film does not want to greatly reduce the rating. And the presence of the heroes from the second part in the triquel also cannot but rejoice.
