A maiden with a changed face runs to the pond. A well-established romance novel cliché? Maybe. Especially if you think a killer monster running after her is also romantic. And the pond turns out to be a pool in which dismembered corpses have been decomposing for months. Fragments of bodies changed beyond recognition, the water has acquired rusty-brown hue, everywhere floating hair and skin scraps. But the full moon is looking down from above, and the girl in the white dress is black-haired and pretty, like a princess from a children’s fairy tale. Dario Argento balances on a knife edge – on one side is romance, on the other is gooey, nauseating horror. The poetry of grave worms and rotting heads. A ballad written in blood. If a lover wants to give a girl his heart, he will carve it out of her chest with all the naturalistic detail and then fall breathlessly at her feet.

Jennifer has a vivid imagination and sleepwalks. Wonderland awaits her, one need only follow the meat-eating scavenger fly, and with special pleasure, human flesh. The Queen of Hearts chops heads with astonishing enthusiasm and does not resort to an executioner to do so. The mad tea party involves the mad Professor and the March Chimp with a dangerous razor in his hand. Somewhere it says “Eat Me,” and it’s poison, and the Dodo bird is a disfigured killer. And if the real Alice was able to wake up, Jennifer turns out to be awake…

The ancient Greeks believed that the butterfly was a symbol of the human soul. They were idealists in general. Because some people’s souls are left to disgusting caterpillars. Besides, butterflies are so fragile and short-lived. You squeeze your fist harder, break it, blow the colorful dust off your hand… It’s beautiful. You can’t do that with a caterpillar. That’s why it’s so interesting to hunt for pure, innocent souls. Making them go through hell, rotting water, vomit and blood. You don’t have to be afraid of the extremes, you don’t have to close your eyes, it’s really beautiful. The director’s sick muse, his dancing snake is mesmerizing and frightening at the same time. No bees gather honey on the flowers of evil, for they are infested with flies, and the ground beneath them is fertilized with corpses. You know you like these dead flowers, and it makes you feel a little ashamed. I guess it’s even kind of perverse, well, Mother, we’re all gravely ill, Mother, we’re all crazy. Here comes our psychiatrist, his name is Dario Argento, he’ll give us an injection, and we’ll have colorful dreams again, full of the destructive beauty of decay…
