David had everything: money, his own publishing house, an expensive car and an apartment in a respectable New York neighborhood, a writer friend and Julianne’s girlfriend, and even enemies in the form of the seven executives of his company. So he lived without looking back, until one day he was in a car accident and woke up after a coma as an invalid with a disfigured face, which now has to hide. His new life turned into a nightmarish dream from which you cannot wake up.
4k movies reviews
Vanilla Sky is a remake of the Spanish film Open Your Eyes. Both films starred Penelope Cruz in the leading female role. The idea is not new for Hollywood to make its own versions of successful European films. But those cases when the level of remake is close to the level of the original are very rare. This is due to the peculiarities of European and Hollywood cinema.
But “Vanilla Sky” is a very special case. Probably the most unique case where the remake was better than the original. It would seem that everything in the film should be secondary: the script, the plot twists, the main characters’ phrases, the ending. There are no particular differences compared to the original film. There should not be any particular interest in watching the remake. Yes, the setting is richer, the actors are more famous, the budget is several times bigger. But that is not the beauty of it. The film is very heartwarming, which is quite atypical for Hollywood cinema. The movie was directed by Cameron Crowe, who knows how to make good life movies.
Actors. The actors in the film are top notch.
Another brilliant role for Tom Cruise. How many of them have already been, such brilliant roles in his career, and how many more, I hope, they will be. Only true Masters can play a man who has lost everything but believes in Love up to the end. And, though not all of his roles are as good as this, but here he played just brilliantly and genius.
Penelope Cruz actress, of course, talented, but not always playing the right roles. There are outright failures in her career, but with her performance of the role of Sophia, she deserved the most flattering words. In a girl like this you really can fall in love. Once and for all. Which is what the hero Tom Cruise did. And the role of Sophia played by Penelope almost without words, just facial expressions, she makes many fans spellbound to follow the events of the film. One of the best roles in her career.
Cameron Diaz. The role is brief, but memorable for a long time. The star of melodramas and youth comedies perfectly entered the drama film. The role of a woman in love, but realizing the one-sidedness of her love struck her well. Especially memorable is her wistful and a little crazy look. And the scene in the car is beautiful – yes, they will never be together, so let no one else have him, and die with me. Yes, by the way, according to one respected website her role appears in the list of “the craziest women” in the history of cinema. Diaz’s role certainly succeeded. After all, she is “the saddest girl in the room.”
Kurt Russell. Another good role for this actor. His character Doc, who leads during the movie intimate conversations with the main character, will play a key role in his fate. Russell is a talented and famous actor. Playing before the heroes and macho, he perfectly reincarnates as a doctor-psychiatrist, playing a supporting role, but no less strong.
There are a number of other good actors who played roles in this film, and they did their job very well. No one falls out of the film, giving the director a chance to fully reveal the film’s intent.
Speaking of the director. He worked just fine. I think it’s to his credit that the actors worked to 100% of their abilities. None of the guest stars dared to work through their sleeves. Certainly Cameron Crowe, one of the most promising directors in Hollywood.
And of course, we cannot forget about the beautiful sound design of the movie. The soundtrack here is a ten-point score. Take, for example, Paul McCartney and his “Vanilla sky”. The music is selected appropriately and sounds appropriate. And as a separate creation the soundtrack to this film deserves more attention.
Summary. Everything about the film is good. Actors, director, script, music, camerawork, ending. It’s hard to complain. It’s a shame that movies like this are made so rarely. But fortunately, such films still occasionally appear and can amuse the viewer with a beautiful, non-trivial, and tragic story.
