4k movie reviews
Surprisingly, Galveston 4K is already the fifth feature film by French director and actress Melanie Laurent. Despite the fact that the girl declared herself in the American market, working with such top creators as Tarantino and Villeneuve, all her directing projects remained fairly local European stories. An even more interesting observation is that Laurent in Galveston exploits purely American film aesthetics.
No longer a young fighter of a criminal organization who had learned about a deadly disease the day before, Roy (Ben Foster), while completing his next assignment, almost fell victim to betrayal. In a bloodbath, he rescues a young prostitute (El Fanning) and her little sister. From this moment begins their joint journey into the not very exciting world of the American mob.
Essentially, the picture is far from the characteristics of action or action thriller. The world of the film is really not very entertaining. Most of the screen time is represented by the internal struggle of the heroes with their own emptiness, despair, fear and the search for opportunities for a decent existence in a climate that is not located a priori. The colorful southern noir twilight of bars and motels in some places is tiring, as are the lines of characters that develop rather slowly. Only the saving and final fifteen minutes reanimate the plot, awaken the viewer to empathy, and really change the attitude to the entire film.
Undoubtedly, the main advantages of the picture – it is sincerity, the lack of unnecessary lyrics and the triumph of ruthlessness. Ben Foster confidently coped with the role of a stern but kind-hearted bouncer, whom fate regularly checks for strength.
Galveston 4K of course represents a true tragedy: gloomy, sultry, sometimes overly prolonged, but very curious. The story of good and evil, their dualism, ambiguity in the Texas province. It can be stated that Laurent took a foreign debut, because she managed to quite accurately convey the texture of the broken American dream.
