The brightest stars of the popular American comedy show Suterday Night live sooner or later left the project to conquer the tempting peak of the full-length cinematography. So, actually. And it happened with longtime comrades and really talented comedians Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd, who at some point became tight on television and they decided to try their luck in Hollywood. Initially, actors, known mainly on small screens, were invited to small roles in second-rate projects, but a modest party or cameo brought Murray and Aykroyd closer to one of the most remarkable paintings of the 1980s – “Ghost Hunters”! It is worth noting that Dan Aykroyd put his hand to writing the script tape, and to bring efforts to his mind helped him no less talented colleagues in the face of Harold Ramis and Rick Moranis. Promising young comedians sensibly reasoned that the public will be delighted with the story, which will deal with professional ghost hunters who are hunted in New York, because, firstly, the presented tape will be full of new-fangled special effects, without which any cashier no longer manages Hollywood film, and secondly, the narrative will have a deliberately caricature character, originally ridiculing classic horror films about disembodied spirits. Producers were not afraid to allocate to the shooting quite impressive by the standards of those times the amount of $ 30 million, and the cast was supplemented as little-known, but certainly interesting Ernie Hudson and Annie Pots, and already managed to build a proper reputation for Sigourney Weaver. In the director’s chair, however, that moment was not very famous, Ivan Van Reitman, who, however, would later turn into one of Hollywood’s most influential directors, creating many imperishable hits … Almost immediately after the premiere of an extraordinary tape about selfless fighters with evil spirits, she gained a cult status . The box office “Ghostbusters” exceeded all expectations, and grateful spectators vied with each other to the cinema for a second session and swept away the accompanying products from the counters. But now, years later, you realize the value of the tape is much stronger, because it simply does not have the power of time and you want to return to it again and again. To relive unforgettable moments and episodes, which became an unshakable classics of entertaining cinema.
So, the plot of the film introduces us to a trio of scientists in the person of Peter Venkman (Aykroyd), Ray Stentz (Aykroyd), and Igon Spangler (Remis), who work in one of the institutions of New York and study the manifestations of psycho-kinetic energy in all its parapsychological manifestations. Unfortunately, the years of work on this field did not lead to any tangible results and the new leadership of the faculty decided to drive the heroes out onto the street and confiscate all their equipment. However, on their last working day, Venkman and the company suddenly discover that there is a real ghost in the city library! Moreover, scientists find a way by which spirits can be caught and imprisoned in specialized traps. So the guys are not discouraged at all because they are expelled from work, but on the contrary they see considerable prospects in this peculiar impulse of fate. Deciding to devote his life to catching ghosts, the heroes decide to organize their business. It is only natural that at first the public was extremely skeptical about such services, but it soon becomes clear that New York is becoming the center of the riot of supernatural forces. At first, houses and streets of the city were filled with ordinary ghosts, plunging the measured life of local residents into chaos. And then – more! According to the alarming omens, the coming to earth of the mysterious Sumerian deity is about to conquer the world and reshape it according to its demonic standards. And, quite naturally, that the only hope of mankind are Ghost Hunters, who never give up before the manifestation of otherworldly powers!
“Ghostbusters” are the fruit of the collective creativity of talented filmmakers and it is extremely difficult to single out one of them, because both the director Ivan Wrightman and the performers / screenwriters Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, and the incredibly energetic and charismatic Bill Murray are all they made their messenger contribution to the formation of the project, which became one of the main cultural phenomena of the 80’s. As mentioned earlier, many members of the creative group had previously worked together in a popular comedy and parody show, and they had developed a warm and friendly relationship, making each of their joint feature films an event that guaranteed to attract the attention of the audience. “Ghostbusters” became the first joint film by Aikroyd, Murray and Remy. And paraphrasing one famous proverb, you can safely say that the first film failed precisely did not come out. It is ideal, from which side not to look. Of course, the spectators of the generation of the 2000s will not cherish such a thrilling relationship to him as the public is from 25 years old and older, but still some classics do not age and “Ghostbusters” belong to this category and they at least will be able to interest the audience of different ages due to the fact that no one has been able to realize the story about professional ghost catching so successfully. Remember at least the recent colorful, but logically poor “Ghost Patrol” and you will immediately understand everything.
Separately I want to note the bright actor’s work. Nominally the lead character of the tape is a poser and a born show-man Peter Venkman performed by Bill Murray. The actor has always succeeded in characters who think of themselves as a star of cosmic proportions, although in reality they are celebrities of the middle bar and will never be able to jump above their heads. It would seem that Murray’s role should repel fans from him, but thanks to his charisma and charisma, the comedian became an incredibly popular person who often closes his stars with other comrades. So, actually, it happened in “Ghostbusters”. Although it is fair to say that Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis also received their attention. The first created a rather nice image of the good-natured companion, and the second played the classic brilliant scientist, only without a shadow of pride and bragging. In addition, I want to note the participation in the picture of the magnificent Sigourney Weaver, which we used to see in the image of a fighter against “Strangers”, and in this film she had to embody the modest, but at the same time terribly attractive, Dan Barrett, who became the object of intense attention of the ascendant deities. Weaver was able to create a surprisingly feminine, attractive image, able to interest the male audience. And this is no small feat for the actress, who is accustomed to playing exceptionally brisk, effective heroines.
As a result, I want to say that “Ghostbusters” are rightfully named one of the most striking films of the 80s. On which side to not look at the picture of Ivan Raitman, it is good, as if just just came out on big screens. Of course, the quality of special effects “Hunters …” is inferior to modern box-office blockbusters, but on the soul, originality and quality of history, the old tape will give one hundred points to the majority of callous multimillion-dollar crafts of the last decade.
