Gotham, early 1980s. Comedian Arthur Fleck lives with a sick mother, who since childhood has taught him to “walk with a smile.” Trying to bring good things to the world and give people joy, Arthur is faced with human cruelty and gradually comes to the conclusion that this world will receive from him not a good smile, but the grin of the villain Joker.

The DC Comics universe, which presented dozens of superheroes to its fans, also created a huge number of supervillains, among which the legendary Joker takes the most colorful place. This is the most mysterious of all the villains, because, following the plot canons of the comics, we are not aware of either his origin or his motives. Therefore, both in cinema and on television, the dark past of this character gave free rein to directors and scriptwriters to come up with their own villain story. The last attempt to re-look at this hero as a product of the cruelty of modern society was the dramatic thriller Todd Phillips “Joker”.
Synopsis Gotham, early 1980s. A street clown Arthur Fleck, living with a sick mother, believed all his life that he was born to bring joy and laughter to this world. However, over many years of cruelty and humiliation from those around him, Arthur is gradually convinced that people will never accept him, because they simply do not notice him. Once Arthur, in a fit of emotion, performs a terrible act that releases him from the face of the insane villain Joker.
The game of actors After watching, I was once again convinced that Joaquin Phoenix is one of the strongest actors in modern American cinema. One cannot but notice how he completely gives himself to the character and is so accustomed to the role that it seems that the actor will now be hit. To some extent, Phoenix even outdid Heath Ledger. His Joker is a deeply traumatized man who has been beaten, humiliated and, most importantly, deceived, who has decided to step out of the role of the invisibility and give the world the one he deserves, namely, the cynical, cruel, crazy Joker. We can say that Joaquin Phoenix deservedly goes to perhaps his first Oscar.
Directing It is worth emphasizing that director Todd Phillips shot a deeply psychological thriller in which he used a storyline from a comic strip, but in the complete absence of even a hint of any superhero. The director draws before us the story of a little man who sincerely believed in his mission to bring joy to this world, but surrounded by cruelty, injustice and continuous humiliation, he embarks on the path of self-destruction. The Joker in the film is not just a villain, but a symbol of the product of the American dream, the inaccessibility of which provokes universal bitterness and anger, resulting in the uncontrolled madness and chaos into which Gotham involuntarily plunges due to the actions of the Joker.
Scenario The film takes place in the legendary Gotham in the early 1980s. The city is mired in a deep economic crisis, and, as a result, unemployment reigns all around, garbage has not been cleaned up, and society is so embittered that violence and lawlessness have become something familiar for residents. Amid all this dullness and gloom, there lives a street clown animator Arthur Fleck, who dreams of becoming a stand-up comedian, but who has lost all sense of joy. He is constantly humiliated, betrayed, beaten, and his beloved mother becomes the only outlet. But everything has its own limit, and in a fit of emotion Arthur commits a terrible and irreparable act that receives wide public resonance and provokes a whole social movement. Gradually, the city plunges into chaos, people demand justice, a normal life, and Arthur, in fact, far from all this policy, unwittingly becomes the inspirer of universal anger and madness.
The outcome of the Joker is a really strong picture with a deep meaning. It does not require any sympathy or empathy, because the protagonist eventually wins back in full, paying the world the same coin, or even more. Once again I note that here you should not expect any fights or superhero antics. Thanks to this, the film itself is taken seriously, and not as a passing movie.
